Next 2 Games

I believe our next 2 games against barnsley and Sheff utd are the most important 2 games in our season, we need win these games to have a realistic chance of mounting a promotion challenge. If we lose either of these can see us struggling to get in the play-off`s and finish mid-table!

How many times has this type of thread been started

There is still hope at any point in the season until it's mathematically impossible that we cannot get into the playoffs?

I agree with this.

yeahh but the point is that these games are where we play teams around us and so we have to win these matches, to stand a real chance of promotion. To be fair, we need to be atleast 10th at christmas to have a chance of promotion!

I think these games are about as important as every other set of two games we will be playing this season. All we need to do is take our chances and try to get ourselves in the best position we can. I do not see how these games will define our season.

Mathematiclly it won't be over but in reality our season is already over, I can't see us finishing in the play offs................

It's all about building a strong squad and trying to end the season as high as possible but more importantly a winning mentality to start the next season with.

i dont think we will not be in the playoffs down to these two games , although i agree that these are the games we should be winning if were going to end up in the playoffs

weren't Reading still around the bottom 3 until about Jan this year and they were within a few points of making the play-offs

Yeh were abouts were Blackpool, they must have been 12th ish going into Christmas.

They were 7th after Boxing Day last season :)

Are you sure ? Maybe just before or after they dropped quite a few places. I can remember thinking who could be in contention for play offs and discounted them for being fairly low.

all three relegation places and all bar one of the eventual playoff teams in place at the end of the (calendar) year- that is surely at odds with the trend in most seasons

Actually this is far from the case. In most years at least 4 of the top 6 and quite often 5 of the top 6 at the end of the year have ended up in the top 6 at the end of the season. In 98/99 the top 6 at the year end were the same top6 as at the season end.

People may scoff at people starting these threads but what they say is backed up by the statistics. Our current position would indicate a potentially best finishing position of 9th achieved from similar positions by Sheff utd twice wolves and reading once each.

There are i think 2 recent examples of sides making the play offs from the sort of position we are now in. Both times it was Crystal Palace.

As for the end of December the usual minimum number of points required to make the play offs from then on in is (based upon usually 25 or 26 games) 36-38 points in the last ten years only once (Crystal Palace 31 points from 26 games in 03/04) has any team made the play offs with less points. Blackpool obviously last year had only played 22 games.

So whilst the next two games are just 6 points we really do need to win them if we are to keep a realistic play off chance alive.

I agree with reynard tbh, we need to start getting a string of wins and it has to be sooner rather than later, but i'd be happy with top half finish then next season go for 1st/2nd place

So if we beat Barnsley tomorrow but lose the next (or vice versa), season over?

What a crock.

few quick points - there's still 32 games left, thats 96 points available, we're 17 points off top. At this stage anyone can still do anything. If we reach february and we're still a distance off the play-offs/automatic then yes it might be time to consider consolidation but not just yet.

I agree with this.

I think it would be best if people stopped thinking of the play-offs really, because it is quite unlikely. We are going to have to improve quite a bit to have consistant enough form to be in the shake up.

Lets just see how things go, and maybe we'll get it right - but whether we win these 2 games or not, it's going to be a bit of a miracle if we end up in the play-offs.

We are 7 points off the bloody play offs. Anyone would think we are in march 20 points off with the way you lot are talking.

It's not that I think we are too far behind, it's that we are going to have to be far more consistent and I can't see us getting it together that quickly.

I don't think if we lose the next 2 games we won't be able to get in the play-offs. We need to start winning no doubt, but it's a difficult task anyway, and if we win or lose I won't be getting too excited or depressed.

It's far from impossible, but we have given ourselves a very difficult task.
