davieG Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 http://www.dailyexpress.co.uk/posts/view/211581/Sven-hails-Steve-Howard-the-new-Vieri/?Sven-Goran Eriksson has handled some of the world’s top strikers during his illustrious managerial career, and he reckons Steve Howard compares with the best of them after Leicester beat Derby 2-0. Eriksson likens Howard, 34, to Christian Vieri, whom he managed at Lazio 12 years ago before his then world-record £32 million move to Inter Milan. But Eriksson said: “Steve reminds me of Vieri. Strong, but clever at the same time. FOLLOW THE EXPRESS ON TWITTER! “He holds the ball well and wins a lot in the air. He is also a very good captain. He shows the right spirit.” Howard’s 71st-minute penalty – after Kris Commons brought down Kyle Naughton – added to Andy King’s opener and sealed Leicester’s fourth win in seven league games since Eriksson took over from Paulo Sousa last month. Howard said: “He has come in and calmed the ship. It’s as simple as that. “We have the utmost respect for what he has done in the game and you just respond to him.” Derby defender Shaun Barker admitted Nigel Clough’s side – who had lost only one of their previous nine league games – were off-key. Barker said: “They did their homework and stopped us playing the football we wanted and we conceded two silly goals.” http://www.dailystar.co.uk/football/view/162957/Leicester-2-Derby-0-Sven-Goran-Eriksson-really-knows-How-to-succeed/? STEVE HOWARD says the secret behind Sven Goran Eriksson’s successful start at Leicester is simple – a little respect. The big striker, 34, says the players respect the manager and vice-versa. It all adds up to a formula which has produced four wins in seven league games since the Swede took over from Paulo Sousa last month. Howard has quickly become a big fan of the former England boss and says Eriksson’s man-management is why. The Leicester skipper said: “He’s got a nice way about him and he gets his points over well. “We have the utmost respect for what he has done in the game and you just respond to him, no matter what. “I’ve had the shouters and the bawlers and Sven is very quiet. “Some players need a kick up the backside and some don’t. Some need a cuddle. “That’s the way it is, and he can spot that. He doesn’t cuddle me though!” Howard’s 71st-minute penalty after Kris Commons brought down Kyle Naughton finished off disappointing Derby after Andy King fired in an early opener. Eriksson said: “Steve is a good captain. He shows the right spirit. “He reminds me of Christian Vieri. Strong, but clever at the same time. “I haven’t changed my approach just because I’m in the Championship. “The football is the same but you won’t find another second division anywhere in the world as strong as this one.” Derby defender Shaun Barker said: “We knew it was going to be tough, they have picked up since Sven’s come.”
Guest Mee-9 Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 Thats an insult to howard, hes better than vieri
Leicester_Loyal Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 Can't believe how much of a difference Sven has made already. The thought of having him with us for 6 years + is just OOFT.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 At last someone sees in Howard what I see!
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 I wonder if Valerenga would agree...
marbelladave Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 I love Svens wacky sense of humour... Comparing Howard to that big Aussie lummox indeed...
Mack Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 By the time Vieri got to Howard's age he was also showing it. I would take Howard 5 years ago all day long, but we need a younger version. Ismail Miller?
Uncle Monty Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 Cracking, love big Steve. Seems to be drawing a lot of plauidits at the moment and he is still going strong at 34 is it? One of my Cardiff supporting chums said that he rates him really highly and would like to see him there - also said that he was unplayable in THAT playoff semi final.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 The sad thing is there are still idiots on here who will say big Steve is past it and not capable of playing in the Championship any more. Been one of the best players this season after King.
Philbert Fox Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 How the fook can you compare an Italian legend to that ageing donkey who the only reason he came to our club was because he couldn't hack it in the Premiership.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 I've been singing Howard's praises all year! If he only had pace he'd be a world beater! I love how you can't read a single article about him without seeing a reference to his size

I love how you can't read a single article about him without seeing a reference to his size He's not my sort of player he never has been, I hate seeing my club play that sort of football where they just knock it up to the big man, its boring. I wanna see us play total football and total football doesn't include big, ageing, ex- derby donkeys like Steve Howard.

muzzy1981 Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 I think this shows how Sven is developing the attack towards a target man and pacey partner, so hopefully when Jan comes round we will sign a Howard-type player but better, and they should slot into the system well. I've never been the biggest Howard fan but he has always had the potential to do well in this League for us. It appears Sven is unlocking that potential, which is great news, so be nice for all the haters to give him a break!!!
nickelbyfox Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 You really cant please some people! I mean I think he was one of the few players to stick his hand up and give everything for the cause this year. I mean he was linked with a move away from the club at the beginning of the season and there busting a gut for ninety minutes! Not my favourite player but deserves the praise he's getting now from Sven

I don't care if we play with 9 defenders and Howard upfront on his own, if it gets us in to the prem!! I think your on the wrong forum mate, you need to log on to www.ficklefoxesforum.co.uk and stay there!!!

As in the total football that Sousa tried to get us playing? football that saw us conceed a ridiculous amount of goals? No thanks Big Steves made a really positive impact this season every time he's played, i'd like to keep him here as long as possible.

Not my favourite player but deserves the praise he's getting now from Sven I admit he's playing much better under Sven, it's great to see him putting in extra effort and winning the ball back, I think he's done that twice now in recent weeks that has led to goals. We need to replace him with a goalscoring threat in January though, as Howard isn't. I don't think he hit the target with 4 attempts from open play on Saturday, thats not good enough. Howard is much more useful as an impact sub.

FoxyPV Posted 15 November 2010 Posted 15 November 2010 Stevie = legend. Whether he's coming off the bench or starting he always does he best and usually scores or creates space etc for others.

I have to disagree with that, usually scores???? Sometimes he scores, and sometimes he makes space. He's doing well at the moment and that good news, I still don't understand why we extended his contract though.

You need a big man uptop as an outlet in those situations, it's not sensible to pass it out when under large amounts of pressure.

We don't just knock it up to the big man, we play through midfield a lot more now.
