Swampdog Posted 9 January 2011 Posted 9 January 2011 Hi, Just seen the penalty for Man utd in the FA cup and listening to the commentators complain that Berbatov dived and also saying that there was contact to me doesnt make too much sense. They say he dived because he didnt need to go down but as there was contact with the player and not then ball then it must be foul, doesnt it? Outside the box a player doesnt have to go down to get a foul, it happens all the time when players get little nicks from time to time.. but in the area theres always different rules.. I just wondered what peoples opinions were on whether a foul should be given (in the area or not) if a player goes down when he may not have to, but bare in mind i do mean with contact from the defending player. obviously if a player goes down with no contact then its a dive. For me, if theres contact then its a foul. Whether a player goes down or not shouldnt make a difference, its in the rules of the game and thats how it should be seen so i cant understand why someone commentating on a professional football match can say anything else.

DJ Barry Hammond Posted 9 January 2011 Posted 9 January 2011 Its certainly a dive - that amount of contact wouldn't knock you off balance and over. However, whether it should be construed a foul is another thing. It was a silly challange to make, but the referee has given himself a horrible president in the game now. I wouldn't be suprised to see a second penalty.

I'm pretty sure there is no law saying that any touch on your opponent results in a penalty and aggers tackle was certainly not strong enough to knock Berbatov to the ground.

If your in the penalty box, and your stupid enough to make any sort of contact with an attacking player without touching the ball, your risking a penalty. Any attacking players going to go down if they have the opportunity, theyd be daft not to.

Any attacking players going to go down if they have the opportunity, theyd be daft not to. England's supposed 'top referee' should be good enough to know that the level of contact made was no where near strong enough to bring him down, should have seen Berbatov's 3 stage collapse (going for a Razzie by the looks of it) and given that he looked to be in two minds about awardign shouldnt have if he wasnt 100%

But he was sent off... Anyway, it was a dive yet again. There are to many cheats in the country. Berbatov is skillfull and he didn't need to do that. Is it me or are Manchester United the only side who win a penalty within 30 seconds? I really wanted Liverpool to win, that banner 'scousers rule, don't forget it' was legendary.

Definite penalty in his opinion The man should not be allowed to pass comment on anything concerning Man Utd. He was also very dismissive of any non-prem fans who phoned in last night too.

Dalglish's post-match whinge caused great amusement to those who recall his playing days, and his antics at Anfield in particular, which went some way towards increasing the penalty count there.

Yeah exactly. Bit off the mark there, Trav. As I said in another thread recently, Alan Green is a well known Liverpool fan. United fans hate him with an absolute passion, his rants and biased remarks are fairly well documented.
