the worrying thing...

We are very near to the playoffs now, 5 points off. From the start we made that is fantastic, but what worries me is that people around us have 2 or 3 games in hand over us, which could easily see us drop back into the bottom half of the table. Hopefully these teams will lose, but it looks unlikely :(

All we can do at the moment is rack up points. If you think about it a lot of these teams will be playing each other as well. Even if this wasn't the case, why is it 'highly unlikely' anyone would drop points? :S

I think we're in a strong position and can still be within 6/7 points when things level themselves out.

I'm sure you will be okay my friend. Take some night nurse, that should help.

If someone loses that means someone else wins, meaning its certain we'll drop places & the gap will get wider... Take Forest for example who occupying the 6th spot we're chasing

they have 3 games in hand and so far have earned 1.72pts per game over the season so far, so if they do that for those 3 games that's another 5 or 6 points, meaning we could be 10pts away from the playoffs

It's tough as hell, really tough

We just need to focus on ourselves and keep picking up points. Obviously a win for Scunny or Preston over Forest would be nice, but if we consistently get 3 points a weekend then we will be there or there abouts come May.

We can't rely on others this early, we need to keep winning and especially against the teams around us, if we can beat 2 or 3 play off contenders then that's 3 points back on the points they will surely pick up through games in hand. We should have a game in hand against Ipswich if we had a decent ref that game.

I was thinking that. 3 points dropped where 1 could have been made in a replay

Here's how I see it:

Burnley (2 games in hand)

Portsmouth Away - Draw

Cardiff Away - Lose

Millwall (1 game)

Barnsley Home - Win

Hull (1 game)

QPR Home - Draw

Doncaster (3 games)

Barnsley Home - Win

Derby Away - Lose

Ipswich Home - Draw

Reading (1 Game)

Sheff Utd Away - Draw

Forest (3 games)

Bristol City Home - Win

S****horpe Away - Draw

Middlesbrough Away - Win

Watford (2 games)

Preston Home - Win

Ipswich Away - Lose

Done the teams who are above us up to 6th in playoffs and teams who can catch us from below (hence Doncaster who are far behind in terms of place in table but 3 games in hand.)

Plugged them in to the predictor on the basis of the above turn-outs (obviously that's only how I see it). There's no guarantees in this league though. As much as I'm not a fan of clichés, anyone can really beat anyone.

So after those games and those results, as if we all got level on 28 games...

Leicester are still in 10th, 6 points off play-offs and 3 points above Coventry in 15th and 3 points below Millwall in 9th.

Obviously, the majority of the above predictions will turn out to be bollocks and I've just wasted time doing this! (That's probably the best prediction out of the lot!)

No, it's 8 points if all teams win their games in hand

Any idea what the points tally has been for 6th in the past say 5 seasons? Might be easier to see how many points we are able to aim for. I'd stab at 70?

2009/10 - 70 (Blackpool)

2008/09 - 74 (Preston

2007/08 - 70 (Watford)

2006/07 - 75 Southampton

2005/06 - 75 Crystal Palace

Average - 72.8

I think we have got ourselves into a decent enough position that it is now up to us, all we can do now is keep winning out games, i'm not bothered how we win we just have to keep picking up the 3 points, if we get a decent run going then we should reach the play offs.

Jeeez... you really need to keep up.

It has been established on several other threads that 72-73 is the average total required for a playoff spot, this season given the competetive nature (and using the points total to date as a guide) of the league this season 70-72 should be enough. ( Should be enough, likely but not guaranteed)

Given out points total at the end of the year 2 points a game this year should see us into the playoffs, so far we have 10 points from 4 games. 2 points ahead of the curve, so what if Forest are 10 points ahead, just means we have to beat them in the playoffs....

It's important not to forget that we still have to play most teams again. If we beat the promotion chasers, which we are very capable of doing, then their games in hand will have less of an effect. The games against Norwich, Forest, Watford and Reading will all be massive.

If we play like we did on Saturday every week we'll make it

Actually, we've got Bamba and the Yak. So we can probably play crap every week and those 2 will still bag a brace each :P

I'd rather have points on the board than games in hand. It only adds unnecessary pressure to those fixtures yet to play.

You can't just make a blanket statement like that. To use an example (and it doesn't matter what the teams are, I'm just picking something from the Championship table):

Forest trail Leeds by 2 points, yet have 3 games in hand.

Forest win 44% of their games. Forest have gotten points in 85% of their games and average 1.72 points per game.

If all games played were equal, do you really think Leeds are better suited to finish above Forest? If you offered me even odds that Forest will surpass Leeds, I'd take those odds in a heartbeat.
