Kitchandro Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 We have different views on what the word professional means. If you go to work everyday and show no interest to get yourself recognition or a promotion, and just sit there on Foxestalk all day doing as little work as possible, does that make you a good professional? That's what I do and I consider myself a wasteman

Cropwellfox Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 I'd certainly like to see another couple come in on permanent contracts in Jan - Given our aspirations for next year if not this, Lamey, Neilson, Logan, N'Guessan, Moreno and co aren't good enough to be around our squad, and need replacing, but if we're going to fill the team up with loan players for the rest of the season and, as is pretty likely, end up in the championship next season, there's a big hole in the squad when Naughton, Davies, Vitor, Van Aanholt, Yak don't come back. Similar happened last season albeit to a lesser extent, with Vaughan, Waggy, Spearing and Bruce all not around when the players came back, and this was partly the reason why some of Sousa's crap signings arrived, because the squad was thredbare. I'm all for premier class players coming in on loan to the club - anybody against it just ask yourself.... Naughton or Lamey - because that's the alternative - but I would like to see more permanent additions like Bamba, players who we know are ours for the next few years and can continue to build understanding. Promotion this year is a long shot at best, so for next season it would be helpful if the players didn't need to spend August getting to know each other.

I take your point but we're not on about them, we're on about Hobbs or Davies specifically. That's a lot more of a debate than Naughton or Lamey, which is not even a debate. It's not like people don't want any loans, but you can have too many.
Captain... Posted 25 January 2011 Posted 25 January 2011 I agree with the original poster, it is not just about buying quality players, it is about building a team, creating a work ethic a desire to play for each other and the team and having a fantastic team spirit. Last season we overperformed for that very reason, everyone bust their gut for the team. We have seen it countless times, look at QPR how many seasons now have they been the richest club in England and tried to buy their way out the league? Those of a certain age will remember with a smirk the Derby dream team of the early 90s, Chelsea needed the special one as a manager to win silverware despite their resources, and Man City have still failed to win anything. Buying good players is only half the battle. The reason we all love Waghorn is because he played with his heart and showed a huge amount of passion and commitment for this club, same as Berner and Hobbs it was the passion and effort of these players that was integral to our success last year. Look at Blackpool this year and Burnley the first half of last season, team spirit is worth so much these days and by ditching the old guard at the expense of mercenaries we are risking losing it. Nobody thinks Neilson should be playing ahead of Naughton, and Bamba has been an inspired signing the kind of player who comes from more humble background and has a great attiitude and personality, not to mention he is ours. Compare him to Davies who by the end of his time here we all felt he wasn't trying and he wanted to be somewhere else. Now that has fallen through he is back on board the Sven revolution. If he wanted to be here he wouldn't have been hawking himself round europe for the last 3 weeks.
hackneyfox Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Perhaps Davies just wants to play at the highest level that he can, I see nothing wrong with that.
Ric Flair Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Perhaps Davies just wants to play at the highest level that he can, I see nothing wrong with that. Exactly mate.
hackneyfox Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Limited players tend to be the ones who will 'put their bollocks on a railway track for you' or 'run through brick walls for Pearson' We've had plenty of them. People don't blame Waghorn or Berner for wanting to play first team football elsewhere.
cc_star Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Similar happened last season albeit to a lesser extent, with Vaughan, Waggy, Spearing and Bruce all not around when the players came back, and this was partly the reason why some of Sousa's crap signings arrived, because the squad was threadbare. Good point, and because things weren't sewn up over the summer we had to over-spend on deadline day, by which time the poor run was already established. Being realistic if we don't get promoted this season we'll have zero chance of signing Yakubu, Davies & Van Aanholt (who we could probably never sign anyway, as Chelsea see him as the future Ashley Cole) Naughton will more than likely attract sustained Premier League attention. However it's hard to argue that the signings haven't had a positive effect and not playing them will see not getting promoted for certain and they'll leave anyway. So at least by making the signings we have a chance of promotion and with it a chance of signing them on permanent deals in the summer. Buying good players is only half the battle. Yup, 100% agree that the best team will always beat the best players. I was thinking of Derby's millionaires the other day, especially when Gary Coatsworth launched Tommy Johnson about 20ft up in the air with his first tackle of the game, Johnson never touched the ball for the rest of the match. Teamwork, enthusiasm, morale, good coaching & organisation will always win-out. Where I slightly differ from your opinion is that, in Sven it looks like we can have both. the desire to sign players who are a class above what we're used to except for a period in the late 60's/70's & of course the mid-90's AND get them to play well as a team.

I will start to believe we have good team spirit and work ethic when we start scoring in the last minute rather than conceding, what always characterised MON's and Little's teams was the ability to win when we deserve to and to snatch a point or a win in the last minute and to keep on playing until the end when we are not playing 100%. When it's the 90th minute and your legs are burning, it is your love for the club that makes you fight for that every last inch, chase down those lost causes and not get caught napping (a la Preston). The Leeds game was a good comeback, and we came back well against Watford only to throw it away again.
dpjfox Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 we still need adequate cover for the midfield 3 plus a striker if Waggy goes
ithuriel Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 Sven knows the money available and is trying to get those he wants to hit the target laid down, promotion, preferrably this sseason but if not definitely the next. Thus if he needs more players then fine.
crazylegs1984 Posted 26 January 2011 Posted 26 January 2011 No more transfers what the hell if we can get players who improve on our current squad then why not I would be happy to see some players go or even get replaced by someone who can do the job better as we have already seen svens signings have been awsome naughton , bamba , the yak and now the potential of aaunholt coming in I'm more than happy with it in sven we trust
Asherz Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 how about stop questioning a man who has managed some of the biggest teams in europe been to 3-4 quarter final / semi finals in the world cup.. who actually took england further than capello ... someone who genuinly is taking us places bringing in quality players not even o`neil could bring here. not not to sound nasty but what is your football manging experience ? ... what a team on football manager ? lets leave it to the professionals who are paid to do it and have the actual knowledge. more knowledge than all of us put together. i mean lets face it if we dont get promoted you lot will be calling for his head anyway and be saying oh we should of kept sousa.
Tewy5 Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 ?? Where were you last year? Do the play-offs not lead to promotion? Idiot.
Tewy5 Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 ?? Where were you last year? Do the play-offs not lead to promotion? Idiot. Where were we when sven took over and look were we r now more quality the better
