Thracian Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 A reward is offered to anyone giving me information securing the conviction of the person who stole my wife's handbag at Leicester Market today between 9.30am and 11-30. The Police have taken a statement and promised that the crime will be assigned to an investigator "in a few days time". Leicester market no longer has security staff (just a few market officers), and even the video films which relay through to the market office can only be accessed backwards by the police at Mansfield House... not by market authorities, not by the victim, but only by the police, and at their convenience rather than on the day. By the time that happens any proof of crime - unless abundantly clear on the video, which would be rare - will quite likely have disappeared. This is not about the contents of the bag either. It is about allowing something to go unchecked which only means another woman somewhere else, and at some other time, will be left feeling as devastated as my wife. The woman on the stall next to me said she'd been the victim of handbag theft at the market THREE TIMES. Where are "human rights" protected, defended and supported for victims?. The black handbag concerned contained my wife's driving licence (her name's Sharon), Halifax BS card, NMTF insurance certificate, a ladies and gents watch and a two-tone white and yellow gold ring in a design shaped like a diamond. There was also a sum of money. I have little doubt that the thief was local to Leicester. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Sorry to hear that Thracian, makes you wonder what actually is the purpose of the police nowadays. Whilst it's highly unlike I will be able to help in any way I hope that maybe a group of civically minded people can do a better job from this one post than the force that we pay plenty of tax to employ can.
samlcfc Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 yeh, I doubt anything will happen through police work. We had the gang of lads with us that robbed my mate once and the police turned up. They were all there, and although the ipod that was robbed had swapped hands, one of them had it. Didnt get it back then and never heard anything of it afterwards. The only thing stops everyone going round robbing each other is decency
skinnydipper Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Not nice for you and Mrs T Bring back the stocks!
Webbo Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Sorry to hear that Thrac. Hope they catch the bastard.
cambridgefox Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Hope you and the wife are ok,really pisses me off when people work hard, and some low life piece of scum wants something for nothing.
AoWW Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Sorry to hear about what happened to your wife, Thrac. Hope she's ok, although understandably shaken and no doubt pissed off. Fingers crossed you find out who took it.
Thracian Posted 28 February 2011 Author Posted 28 February 2011 Thanks to you all for your kind words. So far there are four "possibles" in the frame who are known to have stepped inside our market block and, when I finally see a policeman, we might at last set about tracing them because all four are known to people on the market though not by surname. It may take time but I'm confident that every one of them can be traced and asked to fully explain their movements. Whether anyone becomes implicated remains to be seen.
andy_croydz Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 FFS!!! I'm sorry that you were a victim of a mindless tw*t, I hope they get caught and your wife manages to get some of, if not all of her stuff back.
Bryn Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 What's the chances of the market traders forming a market version of a neighbourhood watch Thracian?
CKB Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Scummy bastards!!! i doubt you will get any luck through the police but hey who knows? Wouldn't have been a nice feeling to go through at all for the wife.. Hope it does get sorted though
Thracian Posted 28 February 2011 Author Posted 28 February 2011 What's the chances of the market traders forming a market version of a neighbourhood watch Thracian? There's a system between the stores like that but it only pushes the problem along. It doesn't sort it. European and human rights legislation has backed the authorities into a corner (which they might well have engineered) whereby they sidestep responsibility because they can't/daren't/don't want to deal with any but the serious problems. And yet they are paranoid about stopping anyone else dealing with them. Consideration is centred on every viewpoint except the victim's. It really is time for the excuses to end and for some standards to be set again. Standards that people respect and defend.
Finnegan Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 I don't really think it's a socio-political issue. It's largely economic. One of my closest friends is a police officer and was only the other day telling me how few police are actually on the beat now in the city at any given time. They've suffered massive staffing cuts like the entire public sector. Besides, as sad as it is, where the fuck do you even start with some petty crimes? We got burgled a few weeks ago, as I mentioned on here at the time, but I know they're never going to find who did it. They came in and dusted but the perp was probably wearing gloves so that's the end of it. It fucking sucks but what do you expect the police to do?

It's marvellous how many dozens of police turn out for a low-key Saturday football match when there's overtime on offer and yet you can't get one to find the market place when a handbag's been nicked.
Bert Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 I hope you get what you want Thracian, but I think me and you both know the likelihood though.
Unit Posted 28 February 2011 Posted 28 February 2011 Hope you get it all sorted and get the ****er locked up. I say locked up but I imagine 4 hours community service is more realistic sadly

They work the shifts they can get, your tone suggests you're finger-pointing at the average front line policeman. That seems a little bit unfair to be honest.
Zingari Posted 1 March 2011 Posted 1 March 2011 you'd probably be best if they don't find the handbag . they'd probably arrest your wife for carrying an offensive weapon like a metal nail file or something seriously sorry about the incident , but you probably know deep down that nothing will come of it and it's just a lesson to be learned

I'm commentaing on what I see - which is that policing levels for more football matches are ridiculously OTT and the lack of police at other times is pathetic.
Finnegan Posted 1 March 2011 Posted 1 March 2011 I dunno, my experience for the most part was pretty positive - the PC was round within the hour, spent a while with us looking around and taking statements and he was followed close behind by the forensic support team. Just brings me back to my other point, for such petty crime, what can we really expect to be done? I know it sucks and you have my sympathies, particularly as someone who's been on the wrong end of a mugging or two before now, but unless you're lucky enough to have a witness who knows who they saw do it you're basically screwed.

Well, it's way past 24 hours now and nothing's been done to my knowledge. And you might call it petty crime but I'd bet a great deal this won't be his/their first offence. As for witnesses, there were almost certainly witnesses. But I'll catch em like the last thief. People might make light of petty crime but I know the sodding misery it causes. And I'm sure going to hand some back after this.

All the "petty" crime that gets swept under the carpet certainly amounts to a whole bundle of grief. We shouldn't have to have the attitude Finners is displaying, which is basically "meh" (to all petty crime, not just Thrac). And I appreciate that one of the large contributory factors is a chronicly underfunded police force, which is pretty much the reason you get a shoddy mail service nowadays - some people's mail is only ever done on overtime because there's no one employed to deliver to some rounds and Royal Mail has no plans to change that any time soon. Unfortunately, it shouldn't be that way. I'm sure there are many coppers who are as frustrated in their jobs as most posties. EDIT: Is any crime "petty"?
Finnegan Posted 1 March 2011 Posted 1 March 2011 Don't get me wrong, I was massively fucked off to be mugged and massively fucked off to be burgled and I have to live, constantly, with the paranoia that it's left me. I just think it's very easy to say "MORE SHOULD BE DONE!" without actually specifying what and how.
