I Was There When...

I was in bed hungover :(

WHY have I just had the awful image in my head of you lying in bed, looking a right state, listening to the game, Yuki scoring, you going wild with your arms and spewing all over your laptop screen

Tongue in cheek mate.

The yuki/dog songs made a comeback today.

Apparentley they're racist

There's no apparently.

They ARE racist. If you disagree you either don't understand the political context or you're a complete weapon.

You might want to go and read up on how the South Koreans (who are stereotyped as dog-eaters) and the Japanese (who aren't) feel about each other.

You want to hope Yuki still doesn't understand what's being sung, if you think you're being supportive of him.

The political context?:crylaugh: Not that I sang it, or liked it

but it's just f...king banter at f...king football match. The ignorant song - most likely, the racist - never.

The song could be claimed to be factually incorrect- though only yuki will know whether he likes to eat dog.

How many other songs we sing are factually correct? Did iwan really live with joachim in a council flat?

aye, it's not like it's a chant suggesting yuki eats dogs when it's the koreans that are stereotyped as being dog-munchers and that our fans are assuming because yuki is from that area of the world he must eat dogs as well...

Yuki Abe is Japanese. Japanese people are not known for eating dog meat.

Korean people are known for eating dog meat, hence why Man Utd fans joke about it to Park Ji-Sung. This is banter, it may not be "factually correct." Park Ji-Sung may not (and probably does not) eat dogs but it's just the United fans having a bit of a laugh at his country's expense. It is light hearted.

Yuki Abe is not South Korean. Nor is this a Japanese stereotype. By singing this song to Yuki Abe, all our fans are doing is saying "you look like Park Ji-Sung, you must be like him." Surely you understand why this is racism?

Not only is it embarrassing that our fans started blindly copying United's fans without actually considering why United's fans were singing it in the first place, it is racist to assume something of the Japanese purely because they LOOK similar to Koreans and lastly it is made worse by the fact there's massive friction between the Japanese and the Koreans anyway.

Bert made a very good point about this when I was getting annoyed before, it's wrong of me to assume that just because I have a number of Japanese friends and am interested in that part of the world, that other people are equally knowledgeable. Bert was right when he said that a lot of people singing the Yuki Abe song won't know that it's offensive and I shouldn't be too critical and start randomly calling people racist. Fair point.

But to have it explained to you (which we have done on this site like 250230853 times) and to still keep insisting that it's "just banter?" Sorry mate, no.

So it's banter to make monkey noises towards a black player?

Shut up.

But thats bollocks. If he was south korean people would still say its racist as we wouldnt know whether he eats dogs or not.

no - then it would be misinformed b****r - as Yuki is japanese it's racist.

edit: Sosban has summed it up better than i ever could

If you read that and still don't understand why it's racist then i'd go ahead and sack the manager of your brain 'cause he clearly isn't doing his job well.

Please remind me what everyone sing when we play against Cardiff or Swansea. "Sheep******rs!" This is OK?

So you shut up.

vic_bob_handbags.jpg

No, it's not OK (IMO) but at least it's (sort of) correct in that it is the welsh who are stereotyped for shagging sheep.

The Abe chant is not OK & is not even correct on the nationality stereotypes - if it was something about dolphins or sushi then it wouldn't be racist but it isn't, it's dogs and so is racist.

I must say I don't see it as racist. Maybe he'd be offended by it because he doesn't like Koreans, I don't know.

It's ignorant and stupid but not prejudiced or hate filled. I think if he was Irish and we called him a sheep shagger for a joke nobody would be bothered.

What's more 'racist', as I've said on another thread, is people talking about him as if he's some kind of novelty because he's Japanese, and also chanting 'he's Japanese, he don't understand'. People seem to see him differently because he's Japanese.

Cos he knows kung-fu!

No wait, that's the Chinese!

Is it okay against Derby?

I think it might be.

PS, Sosban eats leeks.

I think he is seen differently. However, not in a negative way... I think he's embraced because he is Japanese and there aren't many Japanese players in England.. And secondly because of the style of player he is. Abe is a real fans favourite and with a good season next term could become a cult figure
