Ric Flair Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 Betis signed him from some club beginning with W, a Dutch or Icelandic team I think? £3 million they paid! What's happened to him, surely at £3 million he must have been talented? Although Akinbiyi wasn't at £5 million, so that probably says the same about Joey.

dynamite foxes Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 News about Hughes and Williams MBsaid on Talkingbullshit that Hughes is defiently staying. Good news although I rate Williams more. Williams may leave, where to, who knows? but if we get an offer of a million plus thatwould be really good. They are just too similar to have in the same team.

After this season, I think we'd be lucky to get the same amount that we paid for him in the first place...
Louise Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 He's 23, he has alot of natural ability and his passing is second to none. Played in the right style of team and he's premiership class easily, i'll be horrified if Levein gets rid. 121159 Premiership class? Why hasn't he shown it then? I can't remember one game when he has managed to turn it on the whole way through. No club in their right mind would offer 800k for a player who has played as he has done this season. It would be bad to make a loss on him but we're not as good at selling average players as Forest are.

It would be bad to make a loss on him but we're not as good at selling average players as Forest are. 121347 I've seen him play remarkably well in atleast a dozen games last season. If your trying to say he doesn't keep up the same level of performance all game then neither does any player really. Other than a few such as Gudjonsson, Dabizas, Gemmill, Blake, de Vries, etc who are crap for the whole 90 minutes. As i've said before and I stand by my opinion, Gareth Williams is a class footballer. The problem is we most certainly didn't play to his strengths under Micky Adams and under Levein we did to a certain extent. Williams is a passer, that's what he does best. He's not a battler who runs like **** and chases lost causes, he likes the ball played to him so that he can make things happen. Under Levein he got that at times and he looked good. He has gone missing from games and the one thing he needs to improve on is perhaps he needs to get stuck in more, but you can't ask a player to do something they can't or shouldn't do. We got Williams for for a bargain at £500,000, if he was under contract and a club wanted him they would of had to pay a £1 million easily. If we lost money on a player that we signed for a price that didn't match his ability in the first place then i'd be disgusted. The only factor could be that Adams has given him a ridiculous wage and Levein might be tempted with a reasonable transfer fee plus the savings on his wages but even then I think it would be crazy. As many have said we have two quality central midfielders, whether they can play together or not? As we haven't really seen, we should keep both of them as 46 games is alot and Hughes might not be able to handle that many anyway. If Williams got the bit between his teeth more regularly then he'd win us matches. We've seen the improvement in his game under Levein and he'll get better and better. So anything less than £800,000 would represent bad business.
Louise Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 It's all about opinions, I saw very little improvement under Levein. I would agree that neither manager has played to his strengths and you have to wonder why that is, but I also think that his last year at Forest, at a key time in his development as a player, might have stunted him slightly as he was forced to play the defensive role for a whole season. I don't think he's Premiership quality from what I have seen of him this season (of the 29 games I've been to or seen on the TV) but of course he is young and can improve, we should try and get as much for him as is possible but if a Prem club comes in offering 400k and Williams seems keen to go I can see how Levein would think 'why not?' its not his fault we got Williams for 500k. As I stated previously though, I don't think he will go anyway so this whole argument will be redundant.
supedaj Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 yep I agree - this is a waste of time as he is staying .. as is Hughes. There is no truth in any of the rumours about any of them going. If the info was from a website/newspaper please provide info on it (whoever stated this in the first place). if not, lets just put this to bed now.. rant over! ;o)
Filbert_Ross Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 I didnt realise this was the Stephen Hughes Fan Club. He's not impressed me that much since he moved here, looks ok at times im expecting alot more next season off him.
Louise Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 If you read the thread you'll see that both Foxes Trust and Mad Biker have confirmed the interest in Williams.
TrickyTrev Posted 9 June 2005 Posted 9 June 2005 .... can't they offer them that hamster Gudjonsson instead? 121159 No other fooker will have him though. <_< 121204 And to think he once played for Real Betis. 121249 Did he ever actually play for them? I thought they signed him, realised their mistake and then shipped him out to various clubs around the midlands... 121252 5 starts, 6 sub appearances in 2001-2002. Gudjonsson profile 121255 It only took 11 appearances for them to realise then. 121257 I was much criticised for writing him off as a no hoper following the friendly against East Bengal Tigers.

Ricey Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 Out of the two players I would sooner keep Hughes and looking on the positives it would mean Hughes could play in the centre next year and not the wing. However Williams is a very good player at this level and it would be a shame to let him go.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 Wouldn't be overly fussed about Williams leaving as long as we brought in another central midfielder with the money. Although Hughes and Williams are similar, Hughes looks to have a bit more about him. If we could sell Williams for something like 800k (which, if a Prem club are interested in him, would be a realistic price), then we could get in a couple of decent players with that. Firstly obviously a direct replacement in terms of Williams as a central midfielder. I think everyone can see that we need a Lennon-type player so I think around 500k in this market could pick up a very reliable more defensive midfielder. Then with the extra dosh we could go for that massively important central defender (or 3) we need. And then in an ideal world the rest of the budget would go on a striker but I have a funny feeling that Levein will stick with Connolly and rotate Dublin and MDV as his partner. The fact that we were looking to buy an unknown Slovenian kid as the other striker in the squad shows, I think, that a first-choice striker isn't Levein's priority in the slightest. In a way that could be an indication that we won't accept a bid of 500k-ish for Williams as normally that sort of money would be used on a striker at this level.
Ric Flair Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 Levein said at the end of the season that he wanted 2 strikers. One was going to be Sturm, but when that fell through he said he would be looking for 2 again. I imagine one will be a youngster who won't be thrown in straight away and another will be pushing for first team straight away. That gives us 5 strikers, which is healthy but leads to players going mardy when they don't get a game.
bold_fox Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 Williams will not go... mark my words.... Hughes will also stay.. As said earlier, i think we need to have a very good season if they are both going to stay.... Neither of them have done enough to warrent leaving the club as of yet...

That budget is going to be stretched to its limit. No wonder we're looking at SPL players.

Steven Posted 10 June 2005 Posted 10 June 2005 biggest load of bullshit iv ever heard (the rumour that hinds12 made up that is) 121839 Be fair there are element of truth in there. Williams has been watched by a PL club and an enquiry/(not sure about this but deffo about the enquiry)offer has been made.

Snik-Snok Posted 11 June 2005 Posted 11 June 2005 If we played 532 Williams would be ok, but if we stick with 442 he's a liability. For a big bloke he's physically weak, his passing is restricted to 10 yard sideways balls. Doesn't track back, isn't a natural at getting into the opposition box (like Muzzy did), can't/won't tackle, lazy, unable to play the killer pass to unlock the opposition (unlike Hughes), and he's often caught in possession. He probably played well for 10 mins or so in 3 or 4 games last season and other than that he was useless. I think we'd be lucky to get half of what we paid for him, and if he's on the money he's rumoured to be on, then I'd be glad to see he go if it means we can bring in a decent ball winner (not sure about Kisnorbo).
