Eriksson's war chest will be less than £10m

I cannot believe Sven would even consider marlon f'kin king. A thug whose footballing ability is strictly lower end championship. His goalscoring record isn't great and he's getting old. I can't think of a worse striker to sign. We surely aren't that desperate??

Just because they laughed at the suggestion of a £10m transfer budget doesn't mean it isn't true. It could just as easily be more as it is less from the information given. Maybe they were laughing because the idea of a fixed amount of money is, well, laughable. Who knows. All we know for sure is that Sven has done what any good manager would do and played down our riches in public. We know nothing more than that.

A thug maybe but certainly is a very good striker at this level. As I said on another thread, if we signed him and he bagged a hat trick against Forest, would you hate him so much then? :dunno:

This bit cracked me up...Sven should have his own comedy show!

Merc

Eriksson said: "I had a meeting with Top and he said, 'Have you seen the newspaper?' I said no, and he said, 'They are saying I am giving you £10 million'. I said, 'Thank-you'. We laughed.

Of course he may be laughing because he is getting £20m.

I wouldn't buy the lad purely based on his footballing ability. Why buy a player that wouldn't be good enough for top championship level never mind premiership level. The fact that he's also a thug simply makes it worse. He hasn't demonstrated that he's a very good striker this year as well.

Have you actually watched him play this year?

Yes and Westwood on more than one occasion and neither have been any better than the players we have currently. Have you seen Coventry play this season? They are average to poor.

Dammit, well i may have to change my sig!

..fluck it i'll keep it, who knows!

As for Marlon King coming here, i'd be very uneasy with it... He certainly knows where the back of the net is but i'd just feel uncomfortable with what he has done and him playing for us

As for Westwood, OH HELL YEAH!!

Well that's a bit uninspiring

If the right player comes along... well someone on a free can be a better player than somoene costing another club 4 million...

I'm not saying we spend cash just for the sake of it, but I won't be happy with a first team full of loans again. If we've got money we shouldn't be afraid to spend it, if as you say the right player comes along.

The best players generally command a transfer fee.

Westwood not better than Ricardo and Weale? Hmmmm.

We only have Waghorn, Howard and Vassell. Ones past it, Waghorn bobbin (this year) s and Vassell inconsistent. King was one of the best Strikers I've seen at the Walkers this year and his goals in a shit Cov team show he can do it still.

I hope Waghorn gets an opportunity next year, and if so I think he might be able to flourish. Does he really want to go to Derby and a relegation fight? Howard is off to Weds or elsewhere. Vassell is inconsistent, but I think that's because he has been played out of position for the majority of the season due to a lack of quality in depth in the squad.

Marlon of course is free, and most definitely can do it. Sven let Lee Hughes do the business for Notts COunty. I think he's canny enough to know a bargain when he sees one.

Im pretty sure we will be getting a few permanent players in... maybe one or two loans... but we definitely dont need to rely on so many loan players as we did last year. Sven joined us well into the season and so his hands were tied with immediately what he could do - he wanted to improve us and was told to immediately without waiting until january so i think that spoke for MOST of the loans....

i've never understood why it's called a war chest, anyone care to explain?

What Does War Chest Mean?

Slang for the reserve of cash a corporation sets aside to attempt a takeover or to defend against a hostile takeover.

It all depends on the approach. In my opinion, it takes 2-3 seasons to build a side worth of automatic, regardless of how much money you've got. You've got to be patient, savvy, keep your eyes open and snap up players that are right, whether free, loan or for money. That's how QPR got to where they are, same as Cardiff and Forest in particular. I just don't think the rushed approach we've used lately and will no doubt continue to use will work, but I don't see that Sven will have a choice.

Warnock took a squad that finished in the bottom half last season, within 6 months they became a Squad worthy of automatic.

Norwich have just come up from League 1, yes Lambert was there the season before but essentially he needed 1 season to make a relegated team into a side worthy of automatic.

Sven has inherited a squad that finished 5th last season, it's finished midtable this season, and he has money to spend. Money counts for a lot in todays game.

Sven does have a choice, the Thais sad they will spend cash and are desperate for us to go up.

Please don't give him excuses already. If he's good enough, he'll take us up next season.

Warnoxk took over a team that had already had much investment under other managers so not quite as cut and dry.

Are Billy Davies and Dave Jones good enough? They failed year after year to get promoted after receiving heavy investment.

I agree it can be done of course, and we should be there or there about with investment and current squad. But to say he's not good enough if it doesn't happen is a tad unfair.

I THINK it stems back to old kings and queens who used to raise taxes with which to build up resources to pay for a war.. History not my strong subject though

I believe that to be correct, they would get the local Lords to collect taxes and it most likely did end up in a chest. This would be used to pay for their armies provided by the same Lords and mercenaries many of them from other countries.

war chest [countable] informal

1 the money that a government has available to spend on war

2 the money that a politician or organization has available to spend on achieving something:pronsentencea.gifThe government's huge war chest could be used to improve transport.Definition from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English

Advanced Learner's Dictionary. In terms of origin though, it would appear to be Roman..... each soldier is said to have a personal chest / container for armour and weaponry.

Edit: Citizen Soldier according to Wiki..... Chest kept in peoples home who were if you like unpaid militia..... break glass/chest in case of emergency........

Or it's something to do with Sven's nipples and what lies beneath (but that's a new thread in 'General Chat')
