Eriksson's war chest will be less than £10m

Sven-Goran Eriksson has dismissed speculation that he has been handed a £10 million transfer kitty, but said the club's Thai owners will still back him this summer in the transfer market.

Eriksson held another meeting with vice-chairman Top Raksriaksorn on Wednesday to discuss transfer budgets and, while he said it was not £10 million, he said the club would be busy in the transfer market this summer as they plot another assault on promotion.

Eriksson said: "I had a meeting with Top and he said, 'Have you seen the newspaper?' I said no, and he said, 'They are saying I am giving you £10 million'. I said, 'Thank-you'. We laughed.

"We don't know where that has come from. It has not come from me, or from him.

"But nothing has changed in the target they have. They are disappointed, and so am I, the players and the fans, at the end of the season. We should have done better. They want this club in the Premier League next season."

Eriksson has already been linked with moves for Emile Heskey, Shay Given, Marlon King and Keiren Westwood, amongst others. He said no deals had been lined up but revealed that tentative talks had taken place with some agents.

The Mercury understands City have spoken to King's agent and Westwood is on their radar, but Eriksson played down talk of a move for Given.

Eriksson said: "All of them are very good players, in different roles, but we haven't done anything about it yet, only talks with agents about possibilities. Nothing is done or agreed.

"Shay Given's salary is big so I can't see him here, for example. I can tell you that. We are not allowed to do anything and haven't done anything. Besides that I don't want to comment."

Eriksson says City's failure to gain promotion means he may have to lower his sights for potential new recruits, such as Given and Heskey.

King and Westwood are both free agents in the summer and would not make a massive dent in Eriksson's budget.

"It would have been much easier to get good players had we been promoted," he said.

"Also, if you are a Premier League club you are looking for better players, more expensive.

"In the Championship you have to look a little lower with money and with the quality."

I get the feeling it'll be mostly frees, no problem with that supplemented by a few loanees.

 Plenty of good players available on frees this summer.

It's important the club plays down any actual figures e.g. £10 million or we will be held to ransom in the transfer market.

I don't think any club really has a set budget football manager style.

Sven knows who he wants and I'd imagine transfer fees will dictate who he gets. I doubt he'll get an exact figure. If a top player comes up and Sven has spent all his money I'm sure the board will back him if they believe if will be beneficial for the team.

we wont buy big until we get into the prem and try to stay there and climb up the table

Yup I agree, If we could get a few frees and good loans and maybe a couple of £1-2m transfers we should be fine :scarf:

I agree but I doubt we'll be spending big money on actual transfer fees.

Pretty much what I've been saying. Even if they were willing to allow 10-12 players as has been quoted in the papers, I've said most of these would be frees and loanees, as even £10mil won't go that far.

If they are openly saying there won't be that much, then either they have learned their lesson from the beginning of this season, and won't be held for ransom, or they genuinely won't be giving big money for perm transfers.

To be fair I think it'll be a combination of both the above. 'Don't play your cards, but keep it tight Sven if possible.'

With regards to big transfer then there was no lesson to be learned by Sven, apart from the £2mill+ we spent on Waghorn we've spent very little and that wasn't Sven. I'm not a fan of loanees at all but the way this club was run by Mandaric with his inability to find a decent manager and stick with him and the subsequent messed up transition to the Thais and Sven left him no choice. Even then I doubt there would have been any big buys.

No DavieG you are missing what i was referring to. The lesson to be learned was to declare how much a manager was going to have to spend publically. Instantly putting up prices of potential and suitable players. The owners error.

Now Sven didn't spend this money, and no there were no other fees spent other than Bamba and Waggy.

It's clear by the transfer policy, the owners took the advice of Mandy before he left, and they are sticking to it, no doubt to a tee. Loans are the cheapest way of boosting your squad. Pay the wages of these loanees and frees, thus taking out the fees of permanent transfers.

It is a strange conundrum really. Let's hope Sven can find the balance. As I've written in you long long blog article. It'll be a very interesting summer.

Ok my apologies.thumbsup.gif

I want King here to score goals because he is just the sort of player that we need, but I would never support him after what he did and I don't want him here for that reason.

We already have a King who's our topscorer! A pretender to the throne with such a reputation will not go down well

To be honest I question anyone who genuinely believed that our summer would be as cut and dry as the Thai's saying "Look here Sven, we've got 10 million, now go and buy some players that will get us to the premiership."

As a previous poster said, this isn't football manger where you are just given a budget. Sven knows we have money and no doubt he will try and utilise that for maybe 2 or 3 players on permanents but I think the majority of business we do will be frees with maybe a couple season long loans too.

If King and Westwood are both free agents in the summer I would snap them both up, without a shadow of a doubt. A controlled king would be a good acquisition for the club and Westwood looks like a quality keeper in the making

Yeah, that'll be the most rubbish jibe I've received whilst with the forum there Col. Remember. MUST. TRY. HARDER. It should be your mantra.

In answer to your 'hearsay'. I never stated it was a fact, merely my opinion on the existing public facts and going upon historical reference. You should try it when you write something.

I ask you again... tell us something you know to be true, like I did about young Jack... anything else is hearsay surely?

Exactly what I believe. Once other clubs think you have big money, then the players value suddenly increases..

Sounds pretty sensible tbh!
