Donut Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Hobbs is definitely a decent player and I always thought could make an England captain one day. I wish Sven would realize this and play him as first choice, he may have had a dip in form last season but his quality is definitely there. With Waghorn, I have a huge amount of respect for his loyalty, and the effort he puts in, but I don't think he's good enough to be a top goalscorer though if we really want to go up. Maybe a good impact sub or a good striker for a mid range championship club, but not a first teamer for us. We need to be looking at players of Yakubu's quality if we want to not only go up but also stay up. I wouldn't be too upset if he did leave, and I will always remember with admiration the way he conducting himself after missing the penalty for us. But at the end of the day we need 2 strikers who will get us 25+ and 20+ goals if we want to win this league next season, and I don't think he can do that. I think the first part of your quote is right, Jack is a decent player and a very good championship player but future England captain? not a chance for me. Waggy is a wholehearted player but i dont really see where he fits into Svens tactics and plans UNLESS he is going to fundamentally change the formation, because Waggy wont play upfront in the middle of the three as the spearhead and he looked lost when Sousa played him wide in the three earlier this season. Id like to think both of them still have a part to play at our club, i think both of them are useful assets to us.
topharry123 Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Mee over tunchev? Not for me. Vassell hasn't done badly but we need someone who can score more. We dont need to look any further than waggy imo Disagree here because of a couple of reasons. Firstly, Tunchev has played 4 times in 2 years. We've not seen yet whether he is back to what he was yet, but even if he is he is still 30 and with that kind of injury and age probably a yard or two slower than he was. Secondly, on the flip side, Mee is 21 and showed some signs of real quality this season. Yes he made mistakes, but put that down to possibly age and inexperience. He's been capped for England u19, 20 and 21's and with a bit more experience could be a star in the making. I agree with you that Tunchev was quality when he was fit, a class above pretty much anything we've had for a while. However, I think i'd rather take a chance on a 21 year old Mee than a 30 year old Tunchev who has spent 2 years injured. Even if he is back to his best, he would only have 2-3 years at the top level at the very best. Mee could have another 10-12. It would be ncie to keep Tunch around as backup if he can still cut it, but i'd rather see us have a younger pairing at center back who could realistically play for a good while in the top flight.

I was just going off the fantastic season he had for us there, I was sure that a big club would come in for him. Was delighted when they didn't. However, I think sending him out on loan may be one of Sven's biggest mistakes to date imo.
Donut Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I think it'll be a mistake to sell Hobbs. Last summer, he was joint player of the year and linked to lower Premiership clubs. This summer there's the possibility of him going for a low price. Seems bizarre to me. If we can, I'd like to see Hobbs and Mee as first choice centre backs next year. Just like you to explain why you believe this to be the best pairing, im interested in your reasoning Personally i think a fully fit Tunchev, with his full international experience, would be an absolute rock in the heart of our defence
sdb Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I'd rather Hobbs than Bruma or PVA. Slightly concerning that sven obviously doesn't see it that way imo.
Number 6 Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Would like both to come stay but whether or not they make the first 11 will depend on loanees we are able to sign. Mee & Bruma are both rated by Sven, and both younger than Hobbs. If Sven doesn't think they are good enough, and he can get a good price for them, then I wouldn't blame him for doing do. At the end of the day Sven is judged on the team put out, he has to be happy with it.
dannythefox Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I like waggy and i dont think we would of done any worse if he'd of been playing all season either. But the lad wants regular football and he wont be getting it at leicester while svens here so he needs to move so good luck to him. As for hobbs you'll be lucky to find a better defender in this league and it will be sad to see him go but he again wants to be playing regular so i wish him all the best where ever he goes.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Topharry123- You do make sense in what you say, but for me it spoke volumes saturday- tunchev was the best defender on the pitch! Im glad that people in this thread generally rate the pair, rather than slaggin them off. It'll be a loss to the club if and when they go
sven-your-smiling Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 hobbs was in pearsons team and waghorn was in sousa and pearsons. this is svens team and he needs to make his own mark. if that means getting rid of these two, and we get two better players in. ( would like to keep waghorn, but it think we should let hobbs go.)
Rich Fox Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Whats with all the fuss about Waghorn and Hobbs average championship players at best, we need to aim higher.
sdb Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Whats with all the fuss about Waghorn and Hobbs average championship players at best, we need to aim higher. if they're average players at best how were they the best players in a team that finished 5th last season?!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I dont think they are average though. Did you think they were average players last season?
Simmo86 Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Hobbs is a decent defender but just can't play and I don't think he really wants to be here.
I LOVE WAGHORN. Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I don't think either of them fit into Sven's style of play and weren't given as fairer chance as other players... but this makes me sad
I LOVE WAGHORN. Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Also, I think Sven deffinately has his favourites, sometimes who he is reluctant to drop.
Jimmy Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Also, I think Sven deffinately has his favourites, sometimes who he is reluctant to drop. the hypocrisy of fans, when Sven dropped the crowds favourite they had a mass tantrum every game
Haydos Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 if they're average players at best how were they the best players in a team that finished 5th last season?! That's like saying why haven't we finished top with new squad of great players. Obviously football isn't that simple.
sdb Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Football doesn't have to be complicated. Hobbs and Waghorn were key players for us in reaching the play offs last season. How can someone now say they're not good enough for us?! And the reason we've not done well this year is cause the back 4/5 has been messed with and as a result we've shipped goals (as well as PS's nightmare start). Plus the CB's we had last season (inc Hobbs) were better suited to this division.
shiv Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 Mee over tunchev? Not for me. Vassell hasn't done badly but we need someone who can score more. We dont need to look any further than waggy imo Well he's played on the wing for most the season. When he has played up front he's scored a few. Not saying I want Waggy to leave but Vassell is a much better player
Guest Bilo Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I get the distinct feeling Hobbs was very much damaged in terms of confidence under the Sousa regime and has yet to recover. Sven hasn't really given him a fair crack of the whip, which wouldn't be as bad if he had lined up enough quality replacements but Bruma et al have been nothing like as solid as Hobbs was last year. Deserves another chance but not sure he'll get it sadly.
ScouseFox Posted 10 May 2011 Posted 10 May 2011 I think I'm right in saying Hobbs has played more games for us than any other centre half this season, so the whole "wasn't given a chance" thing is a bit of a mystery to me. And he was pretty shit in almost all of them, so he's just as much to blame for shipping goals as everyone else, that's why Sven looked for replacements. But yano, he's the golden boy. He was good last year, surely he must still be good. This season, he has in no way been massively better than any other centre back we have had on our books. Bamba has looked a better defender, and a better footballer, yet people are happy for him to depart for anything more than we got him for. Anything around £1m for Hobbs and I'd be chuffed, unless he can show his form from over a year ago.

This season just gone under first Sousa and then Sven we were more expansive and wanted to play our way out from the back and Hobbs wasn't good enough. Why can no one ever understand this basic thing, you can hardly of missed the fact we were a lot more fun to watch in style this season...
dannythefox Posted 11 May 2011 Posted 11 May 2011 Whats with all the fuss about Waghorn and Hobbs average championship players at best, we need to aim higher. Since when has jack hobbs been average he'd get in nearly every team in the championship!
Corky Posted 11 May 2011 Posted 11 May 2011 Why do people have a problem with Sven having "favourites"? He is paid to pick a team he feels would do well for the club. He has players he probably prefers, just like supporters.
