Heritage Board

Came across this article on the net today, telling how Brighton fans are seeking to commemorate their former ground for the benefit of younger fans.

For years it was the home of the county’s biggest football club and legends such as Lawrenson, Ward and Crumplin.

But as Brighton and Hove Albion move into their new American Express Community Stadium home, Seagulls’ supporters are looking for a permanent reminder to the place they called home for nearly a century.

They believe a heritage board opposite the former Goldstone Ground in Old Shoreham Road, Hove, will help others remember a huge part of the club’s past.

Tim Carder, chairman of the Albion Collectors’ and Historians’ Society, which is overseeing the project, said: “When the Goldstone Ground was taken from us 14 years ago there was no ceremony – just the sound of supporters dismantling the ground for souvenirs and protesting against those that sold it. “Now, as we move on to the magnificent Amex, it’s finally time to come to terms with the loss of the old ground and remember it in a formal and appropriate manner. “A generation of fans that never knew the Goldstone Ground has grown up.

“A heritage board will allow us to tell our younger supporters and those not yet born something of the story of that well-loved venue.”

Fans are working with Brighton and Hove City Council to install the board in the south-west corner of Hove Park near the Goldstone, the large rock which gave its name to the area.

One side will display a history of the Goldstone Ground, the other an account of Goldstone Bottom and Hove Park.

Supporters say the cost will be met by the Albion Supporters’ Club although fans are invited to make a small donation.

Any excess income will be donated to Albion’s award-winning charity arm, Albion in the Community.

Details of the unveiling will be announced at a later date.

Should we press for something similar in Leicester? After all, Filbert Street had a longer and more successful history than the Goldstone Ground did.

Personally I'd love to see one.

There is little clue that a football ground ever excited at all, and to my knowledge the only concrete commemoration of Filbert Street is a small plaque in the reception of Filbert Village which is pretty pathetic considering how much history the place holds.

What we need is a proper museum, the one that was promised when we were moving to the new stadium, we have enough exhibits even though they mislaid a load. I also think that mickythehoss's FS model has been bought by the club via the club's historian so that would be a massive reminder of Filbert St.

Note: LCFC have not bought Micky's model he's donated it to them as a gift for all City fans.

A justification on it's own as to the need for a proper museum.

We need to have something regarding the memory of Filbert St, it was the home for 111 of the 127 years the club has been around.

Something definitely needs to be done.

It's amazing, for lack of a better word, that there is so little to remind of us of it at the Walkers or on the site itself.

And i was laughed at for saying we should have incorperated a part of filbo into the new ground.

we need something like a heritage board to make sure something is done.

I nominate DavieG for chair. :thumbup:

Doesn't mention sport, but does say this:

We fund projects which focus on heritage. Heritage includes many different things from the past that we value and want to pass on to future generations, for example

People’s memories and experiences (often recorded as ‘oral history’ or spoken history);

Histories of people and communities (including people who have migrated to the UK);

Languages and dialects;

Cultural traditions such as stories, festivals, crafts, music, dance and costumes;

Histories of places and events;

Historic buildings and streets;

Archaeological sites;

Collections of objects, books or documents in museums, libraries or archives;

Natural and designed landscapes and gardens;

Wildlife, including special habitats and species; and

Places and objects linked to our industrial, maritime and transport history.

I'd think an LCFC heritage centre would tick 1, 2, 5 and 6.

We could probably get up to £50k without having to do too much. Get the club involved. Find some space at the ground. Set up an unincorporated association "Foxes Talk Filbert Street Heritage Society". Write a bid. Open a bank account. Procure heritage items. Bingo.

Pretty sure this could work.

im sure it would work too, however i cant help but think this thread will sink ala the statue debate and soon be forgotten.

shame on us all really.

Wow, didn't expect as detailed a response as this!

I think a bid could be extended to cover 4 and 8 as well

I know for a fact that following the recent closure of the learning centre at the ground, there are some rooms there currently vacant.

Whether that area would be a suitable site for a museum/heritage centre is not known, but if you don't ask, you don't get!

Are you going to the talk at the Guildhall on Sunday? I'll raise the idea there and see what the response is. Some follow-up work with the local media may also be undertaken to gauge the extent of backing.

I think this may now be the time to push this idea with the club. Top has been looking for a while to strengthen links with the community and this project might offer a suitable way of doing this.

OK. Nice one. I can't make it (going to the Artisan Cheese Show in Melton!), but keep me posted. I would be interested in helping this idea move forward.

The road onto the site was named Lineker Road following the Trust carrying out negotiations between the developers & the local council (who normally don't allow roads to be named after a living person)

As I reminder the choice of name was carried out via votes cast via the Leicester Mercury (which we also arranged)

The second part of the commemoration of the site was planned to happen when the second phase of the site was built, which of course has still not taken place. The developer was then going to erect some metal railings around the perimeter of the site which would have featured a fox based shape built into the design

Not sure how much the new Chief Executive would know about that.

In any event it wouldn't do any harm to remind her, as well as enquire about the club's likely support for ideas like the heritage board or the museum.

Maybe someone could e mail her and see what her opinion is?

I think if we can all agree on what we would like to see then our chances of success would be greater. so if we detail a list of peoples ideas then maybe put it to some kind of vote and then take it from there.

so far we have

1. A museum situated in the club.

2. Railings around the original site with a fox logo.

3. (mine) A permanent all weather model situated outside the ground with all the relevent info on a plaque.

Feel free to add yours.
