davieG Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 ..with our Matt Mills deal? http://www.planetswa...ArticleID=11468 The new yardstick by which players are valued.
jonthefox Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I think so. Every time top rings another chairman , his secretary says the golden tits on the phone.
ajthefox Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 To say we're the trigger may be a little keen since many would agree we've spent too much, but we've certainly done ourselves no favours in paying so much for him.
demon_dog Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Not sure if we've triggered an increase, it's probably a case of "Who's on the phone? " whether it be City, Palace, West Ham, Blackpool or any other clubs with a bit more cash than most.(Parachute payments) That the clubs or agents tend to try to up the buying fee. That's business, it's just a case of whether the interested parties are prepared to stump up the extra. I just hope that our owners spending to get promotion at all costs isn't in vain.
Dr The Singh Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I don't think it will effect anyone else but the deal will make players more expensive for us!!!
John Matrix Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 it comes down to how much a team wants a player really though doesn't it. whoever is in the position of power will benefit the most. wish swansea hadn't gone up last season so we could have maybe signed williams as well. i'd say 2 mill for him is stupid in the first place regardless of what we payed for mills. he's easily worth 5 mill.
john doe Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I think it was the Connor Wickham-deal. andy carrol and henderson over 50 mill?
Salieri Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 £5 million will seem like the steal of the century when Mills becomes an England regular.
thybluefox Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I don't think we've triggered it, but I do think we paid a little too much for Mills, had it been (rising to) 3 or 4 million I don't think there would have been as much of a fuss. There's certainly clubs recently that have paid well over the odds though, deals for Wickham, Henderson, Caroll, Torres etc. Its just the way things are going at the minute, and I'd say we're very lucky to be in a position to keep up (in a relative sense). We've also got some steals this summer though, Danns and Nugent obviously but I think we also paid under the odds for Schmeichel too. I guess it comes down to that a player is only worth what a club is willing to pay for him, if Sven and co deem him to be worth so much, then that's that.
Jace Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 ..with our Matt Mills deal? http://www.planetswa...ArticleID=11468 The new yardstick by which players are valued. I dont think so sven has made some financially sound purchases this summer aswell and theres plenty of teams in the country that will spend far more than us on players, teams like chelsea and man city may increase the sale value of a footballer but not us yet
IronHidez Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I think the money we forked out for Mills will pay off soon Was a solid unit for Reading last term and another season in the championship will not hurt in his growth This over priced topic got out of hand when the Carroll and Henderson deal came along. £50 mil for unproven players is far too much Even £9 mil for wickham was way too much
samjohnson Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I'd say the Torres-Carroll saga kicked it all off. If Carroll is worth £35million, then my name is Fidel Castro
The Doctor Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I'd say the Torres-Carroll saga kicked it all off. If Carroll is worth £35million, then my name is Fidel Castro Pleased to make your acquaintance Mr Castro. I'm interested in buying part of Cuba - I can offer 2 baseball caps and cigar, do we have a deal?
samjohnson Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Pleased to make your acquaintance Mr Castro. I'm interested in buying part of Cuba - I can offer 2 baseball caps and cigar, do we have a deal? 3 cigars and a 5 minute chat with my friend Kim Jong-Il is all I am offering
John Matrix Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 financial fair play is going to make them all drop down anyway. that's why they're peaking. along with the madatory homegrown allowance and smaller squads
Lovejoy Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 ..with our Matt Mills deal? http://www.planetswa...ArticleID=11468 The new yardstick by which players are valued. If we sell him, i'd want £8 million minimum with Matt Mills going for £5 million and Scott Dann worth £15 million. Williams is a better defender than that both of them.
davieG Posted 9 July 2011 Author Posted 9 July 2011 Of course the Premier League have been paying extortionate transfer fees for a long time But I was referring to the Championship, this is a massive fee for any Championship club.
Saxondale Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Of course the Premier League have been paying extortionate transfer fees for a long time But I was referring to the Championship, this is a massive fee for any Championship club. Fair point, but this perhaps goes to show that we're being sold / perceived as a Premier League club-in-waiting rather than a Championship club. I don't think us paying £5.whatever million for Mills is going to greatly impact what other Championships clubs have to pay for their new signings.
sphericalfox Posted 9 July 2011 Posted 9 July 2011 Can spirals go upwards? Anyway. We were always going to be mugged this summer. Part and parcel of having money. The market isn't going doo-lally. Everyone in the Prem who has money will finally spend it this season. The arguement that most big spending Prem teams is how justify it, and recoup the spend in the global market. Some teams have that sorted. (We are currently on the way there)The bell has rung and it's last pints at the bar. The Championship is no different. There's some serious money that wasn't here before. We are fortunate to have owners who have a serious business plan and are well situated to make it work. With the Prem prize shrinking, and the CCC payments getting smaller, it's imperative for clubs roundabouts our size (ie. Derby, Nothingham, Brizzle City, Reading, Carduff, etc - I understand the comparative size argument, but I mean numerate fans available to size of actual paying customers) to make it to the Prem to continue as entities, otherwise mediocrity and inevitable disenchantment will occur. Look at Boro and Coventry for example, and Direby for another example of desperation, who if they don't see the Prem soon, may go the way of the dodo bird. This for me is currently inflating the market, as those CCC clubs will not part with their best or most wanted players, if they have not got the value to entice a good replacement, therefore affecting their potential to luck it to the playoffs or promotion. Everyone is going to be greedy, and will get as much as they possibly can while the money is being spent, as next year a lot less money will be splashed with an unhealthy vigour.
