Today's referee

I don't exaggerate when I say that today's reffing performance is possibly the worst I have ever seen since supporting city. ANY physical contact was met with a sharp blast of the refs whistle. The sendings off should have been yellows... Gallaghers yellow for throwing the ball up in the air was not matched by Joe murphys blatant kicking away of the ball when we got a corner.

Is this the face of things to come with referees? Have they been told to reduce the game to a non contact sport?

Today's ref was an absolute fookin disgrace and it was clear that he wanted to 'stamp his authority' right from the start. Ok this was a local derby game but the twat completely went over the top.

Comments please....

I thought people would be used to this by now - it's been happening on a regular basis since about 2002. And it will only get worse now we are favourites to go up. You all know what i'm talking about.....

I don't normally moan about refs but he had a shocker, the assistant on the left side was poor too, how he didn't see when looking straight at the ball at least 3 feet out of play I'll never know.

Only heard it on the radio but from the commentary it sounds just like you tell it. All I can say is at least we came out with a win this time and the bad decisions didn't take points away from us!

Yeah I thought straight away that Vassell should have gone, but quite a few people around me seemed convinced that they heard him make contact with the ball. The replays should clear that up one way or the other though.

There are several "penal offences", of which "strikes an opponent" is one, as is "attempting to strike".

He was keeping to the literal word of the law. Yes, albeit, there should have been some common sense included, but the referee's have probably been given a memo stating that they should clamp down from day one.

Literally nobody has disagreed with Vassell's red...

I only saw it at the time of course... I'd say just over 6000 fans didn't agree at the time... Believe me, this ref was gunning for ANYTHING he could produce a card for.. Blowing up for wellens after about five minutes for a foul that wasn't heralded the start of it..

There are laws of the game and then their are the people exercising them. This man reduced the game to a non contact sport and it was ridiculous.. Were you there?

Nah I wasn't, it did sound like he was generally an arsehole though.

Couldn't wait to be centre of attention etc. Instead of diffusing situations it sounded like he reacted in accordance with the crowd and did nothing to help either side play football. Could be way off though.

Spot on mate and fair play, I may be wrong about the first red.. We'll see later... My general point still stands..

I agree with the original poster.

When allocating referees for what was always going to be a heated local derby why dont they do everyone a favour and send a referee with at least an ounce of common sense and understanding of what a derby game will be.

I bet the fella we had today was bullied at school..................

I was at the game, and I have seen FAR worse refs before.

Sure he blew up too much and was swayed a bit by the crowd but both red cards were correct and he didn't get anything major wrong imo.

He was bad. Bit nowhere near as bad as the ref we had at 'Boro away. The Lino dugout side was terrible, and had the worst hair I've ever seen.

As my mate said earlier, that lino's hair was something straight out of an early 90s boyband.

Ref was the usual card happy, 'no-contact please' Ref.

Both red cards were right. Few yellows weren't.

I'm not so sure both red's were justified in all honesty. Yes, Vassell's challenge was rash but it was a 50-50 ball and although he went in hard and a little late it wasn't an intentional dirty foul. Given that he doesn't have a history of being classified as a dirty player and it was very early in the game, then I think a yellow card and a stern talking to would have sufficed. Same goes for Coventry's red. In fairness it was never a red card but the ref had set the precedent by sending off Vassell so had no choice but to give him his marching orders too. It was a shame really as the game was ruined by the ref's inability to apply common sense to a situation. How on earth Murphy wasn't booked for kicking the ball into the stands when Gallagher was booked for throwing the ball away was truly shocking.

His hair was just odd.

Oh yeah, and he wasn't very good at his job either. But the hair was worse.

Irrelevant.

Irrelevant.

Only irrelevant if you referee like a robot and do everything the book tells you to. If you apply common sense then intent should be considered as everyone makes mistakes once in a while. Factor in that the players haven't played a competitive game for several months and it's only expected that errors of judgement will be made by players on the opening day. It just takes someone with a small amount of intelligence to manage the situation in these circumstances to avoid blowing the whole thing out of proportion.

No. A dangerous tackle is a dangerous tackle. Where do you draw the line?
