shen Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 we played like that on saturday because we played with 10 ****ing men for 80 minutes of the match, away from home. Before making that sort of claim, at least watch us in a match where we're able to play the way we did last season. Sven will never be the most adventurous manager on away days, and I suppose that's what's really grating Thracian and co. But if we get results like we did on Saturday then I think the performance is vindicated. As long as the team dominates home games, I don't think many will have any qualms about it
MC Prussian Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 This season is all about grinding out results away from home and delivering at the KP. In the end, three points are three points and three points more on the account that gets us in the league of all leagues. As Nick's already stated in the Derbyshire thread, we could also go for a lesser-known name in terms of striker, but one that adds a certain element of unpredictability for the opposition. Switching forwards and strikers left and right during games and keep the opposing team chasing shadows. If our defense continues to deliver the way they did last Saturday (clean sheet, Peltier with the goal), then we don't really have to worry about what striker we're signing because every player poses an equally big threat when it comes to scoring.
volpeazzurro Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 You can't always get what you want in life and Long is a good example. You certainly can't blame him for wanting to play Premiership football. Maynard is a bit of a mystery but probably Brizzle don't want to sell him to a fellow Championship side as well as trying to get as much money for him as possible, both are understandable, its not just about us. Perhaps things will be different in January. If we've got what we;ve got, then for tonights Carling Cup game, with Vassell out of contention I would like to see Waggy given a full 90 minutes in what is likely to be a very different side from Saturday due to internationals and injury. Waggy would be chomping at the bit and I still believe that given time, with a bit of confidence he could come good, Certainly the last player we need is Ismail Millar which would be spending money for spending monies sake. He may score a few in this league (not 20+) but if you remember him from Match of the Day and from talking to a mate who's a WBA season ticket holder, he's one to be avoided at all costs. Give Waggy a go tonight, what have we got to lose? Cheers.
blueredswed Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 it was stringer asking and he actually said Michael Ball has signed now. and sven said Is it official now... I must Appolgize you for that I have not listening good enough or perhaps? I listening once again on the BBC and then searchs on Google here in Sweden and I think the YAK will come back as soon Sven calling (but not sure)
Aylestone Fox Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 I remember a while ago when a lot people on this board were being very negative and getting into hysterics about us having not signed anyone. A few weeks on and then there are complaints about our transfer policy being all over the place and now, about a week or two after the defence and midfield is pretty much sorted, there is yet more panic about this illusive striker. I really do wonder whether some people just sit on here waiting for us to sign someone all day every day for the summer break. This is clearly a big deal for those at the club as we have seen from the supposed bids we have made. It's looking increasingly likely we won't get Long, Maynard or any of the other big names mentioned but for fooks sake have some patience. There are still 3 weeks of transfer activity left and as one or two others have eluded to, the start of the Premiership may well play a very big part in us being able to sign one of our current targets or another name on the list we haven't seen, possibly on loan. I wouldnt call those two 'big name' players myself,..you are right though, show some patience boys, Sven will deliver he has done on all other positions to date, in :sge: we trust,...
Blinking Blue Owl Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 Now then there's no need to swear Large Al it does not make your opinion any more valid than mine , it's not big and it's not clever where as you appear to be Large and not very clever .
eye666 Posted 10 August 2011 Posted 10 August 2011 I'm sure :sge: has his contacts book and is scouring the planet for a striker. Probably waiting till the Prem starts and he goes and loans Drogba...
FazzaF Posted 10 August 2011 Posted 10 August 2011 Sven might have some one in mind to partner Nugent, Jeffery Schlupp maybe or Anichebe from Everton

The Doctor Posted 10 August 2011 Posted 10 August 2011 We played just the same when we had 11 men. We did nothing but defend the lead in numbers and make token attacks leaving King and Gallagher looking embarrassed in their search for support. . we had 11 men for all of 10 minutes, one 10 minute spell at beginning of the first game of the season is not indicative of how we will play this season. As I said, we sat back and defended the lead because we were down to 10 men. Before you spark up about Coventry being down to 10 as well - it's not about the number of players compared to the other team, it's just about the number of players - with 10 men, players have to put in even more effort than usual, factor into that the temperature etc. and players are going to tire faster. Besides, surely that is fine since we won - No-one in their right mind would carry on attacking when in that sort of situation, instead they would look to retain possession and just hold on to the lead, only looking to get forward when it is sensible to do so.
cc_star Posted 11 August 2011 Posted 11 August 2011 Probably losing out on our long term no. one target (Maynard) to a promoted team, just after we lost out on a preliminary target (CMS) to another promoted team... Great! Yes, we may have stuck at around £5m, where £6m looks likes what it would take and it's good we're not held to ransom, but will we regret not forking out that £1m come the end of the season? Secondary to that there's lots of buzz that S'ton won't be stopping at Maynard and plenty more will there within the month... This division just gets tougher and tougher. I know a lot of people's reply will be: Schlupp And I see their point and in part agree, but a forward like Maynard who is heads & shoulders one of the best players in the division will make a big, big, big difference over 46+ games

He didn't even cut it during their opener. And don't get me started on injury worries. In the end, Maynard or no Maynard, we'll get another addition to our strike force. And that will be one who'll fit right in.
