blueredswed Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 you got the link ??? same interview?? as in the post match intervivew saturday stringer said to sven ball is now signed and sven said "is it official" I´m not soo good at this streaming I.m old man but I search on Google on tv sessions here in Sweden and BBC came up so with 128 other channels and there it was!
leicesterseddon Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Sven has repeatedly said that he's looking for a striker, even claiming it will be 'a big name'. We don't know how much he has left in the budget, but it would be safe to assume he's still got a bit of moolah to play with. Even if we don't sign a striker, I'd say we would probably bring in one on loan. Sven has plenty of contacts. A lot of business is left very late these days...personally I think we've done well to make so many signings before the start of the season. The truth is that the transfer window inflates prices in the run-up to the deadline, and those clubs who are not looking to re-invest the money (and let's face it, that's most of the clubs in this league) will want to leave it late to get as much money as possible. Calm down.

Calm down. im not so sure about this really.. after trying to get cms, maynard, long, we didnt seem to get anywhere. if the figures going round for long or maynard are true surely if he had these contacts people make out he could have got a striker in by now with that amount.. the striker targets has been minimal really. would have thought someone with the contacts would have many more options by now ??

I doubt Sven wants to list the players he wants in public. The ones that have been public, have been rooted out by insiders or by clubs looking to raise the bar on the income they want by attracting other interests. There'll be players on his list that will be a surprise I feel, unless someone lets the cat out of the bag.

The reported striker targets have been minimal in comparison with other areas. That's all we know for sure - we don't really know what his 'options' are. And in any case, the number of players we've been linked with isn't that small compared with other clubs in this league. Everyone wants good strikers but there aren't that many to go around, and what there is costs money to buy. Sven has brought some very decent players in on loan - Fernandes, Johnson this season plus Mee, Naughton, Kamara and Yakubu last year. I can't say for certain we're going to get a good striker in on loan if we have to, but I think we've got a damn sight better chance doing it under Sven than we ever had with Adams, Hollobrain, Pearson etc. over the last few years.

Nick Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Sven said that he felt it was unlikely that he would make any signings that would be in by the end of this week. So I'm not sure what all the negativity is about. He is clearly waiting for the Premiership to commence and then it will be clearer which players are surplus to requirements so sales and loan bartering can commence rather than the game of call my bluff - y'know like the Yak will be in Everton's first team all season as a perm fixture. People have just exploded with impatience, wouldn't surprise me if we signed a wide man and a striker in before the window shuts. Sven is wanting a 'big-name' - this is shirt sales and notoriety as well as football. Everything is fine I don't understand pushing the panic button when there is nothing wrong or unexpected.

When did he say that? I've heard him say it would be unlikely that we had anyone for the Cov game (turned out true) but didn't know he'd said all this week as well.
MC Prussian Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 We will sign a striker, because we need one. Sven's going for depth in squad and Waghorn and/or Howard are not the answer, at least not permanently (although Waghorn's still got potential). If you want to go this road, you want to have options and the new guy will be as good, if not even higher-rated, than Nugent. Competition for places is where it's at. With one more striker/forward, we'd be covered in all areas and would make a VERY hard side to beat because there's quality (and potential) all around. We've already seen how it's paid off defensively against Coventry. They hardly had a shot on goal, we closed empty spaces really fast and swift. Adding another striker means adding that one decisive lucky punch element this unit needs.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 I don't know why there is this fixation on a "20+ goal a season striker" As others have said - we scored a ton of goals last season and our front line hasn't changed other than Nugent for Yak, plus our Defence and Midfield (i.e where many moves/goals are started) have really improved. In addition to this we have scorers from all across the team, so we don't necessarily need a figurehead goal scorer. And on the phone-in with Sven i think this statistic came up: "of the last 18 teams promoted from the Championship only 4 had a player that scored 20 or more goals in that season"
blueredswed Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Ok! This is my thoughts.... If Sven say I want those players evereybody rush after them! But the player one and only he want is? Just Sven know and there we are! Just let it happens and then everyone say such a good player and he is from premier..... Soooo bright is the future!
acooling08 Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 It was clear to see at Cov that we need another forward who actually scores a goal every other game. We can't rely on Peltier to nod one in every week.
crisp packet Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 On an interview last thurs or Friday on Sky sports news Sven said when ask about long he said we was after a 20 a goal a season man , a big name when asked if long was a target he paused , said that he was on the list . He also stated we had bids in for 4 players , but warned that many teams was after such strikers .... Chill out , we will sign a name ( marque signing) ... Sorry not got link as on phone but it was on sky sports !
Daggers Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Offer Chelsea £250, a signed photo and a handjob off Filbert for Torres and everyone will be happy. Everyone except me who'd like to see a 40-goal a season striker, with sideburns and a perm who holds down a part-time job working in a pit.

He would never place in Svens team How many goal last season
shen Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 I'm with Ric on this, I think Sven will definitely get someone in who'll be first choice or partner Nugent. The aggressive way we've been pursuing strikers and placing bids tells me we just have to be patient. But oddly, why do we care how much the club pays for a new player? It's not our money...
crisp packet Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Here is link talking to many players ( me bad) http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,,16428_7080672,00.html
Daggers Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Maybe someone could have a riot and steal a couple of strikers from somewhere.
wellyfox Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Well, not another one after Nugent. And heck, why not. I think we're right NOT to pay the ridiculous prices that Brizzle and Reading are holding out for. Sure, if we could have got them for £2-3m who could complain, but what they want, I'd rather stick. Yeah we missed out on CMS, but is he really any different from when we signed Fryatt from Walsall? So we've got Nugent, Waghorn, Howard, Gallagher, Vassell, Schlupp - myself I'm not so sure that Nugent can't get 20+ with the right service, that Waghorn might recover his confidence (cos that's all it is), that Schlupp might be a revelation and that the others will weigh in with goals here and there. I just hope that should we fail to get any of our original targets, Sven doesn't feel that he's got to get somebody and so he goes and buys anybody (I'm looking at you Ishmael Miller <_< .) Maybe we'll be just fine without anyone else? But Schlupp is on loan and sorry Waggy ain't good enough he's just 100% effort IMO
Nickfosse Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 But Schlupp is on loan and sorry Waggy ain't good enough he's just 100% effort IMO Where has Schlupp gone on loan? Have I missed something?!?
Maybes Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 Didn't realise there were only 23 days until the transfer window closes
cc_star Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 All these people think Sven has a masterplan for a marque signing That was Long, Oh, but there's 3 or 4 names... yeah, Yakubu (not coming) Keane (non-starter) Maynard (not coming) in addition to Long (not coming) where now? Matt Derbyshire, yeah not bad but hardly worth jizzing over averaged about 1 in 4 at Blackburn... firmly in Waggy territory *edit* yes I've crashed and gone all negative, sorry, I need some sugary snacks... or a few goals past Rotherham tmrw
ajthefox Posted 8 August 2011 Posted 8 August 2011 I remember a while ago when a lot people on this board were being very negative and getting into hysterics about us having not signed anyone. A few weeks on and then there are complaints about our transfer policy being all over the place and now, about a week or two after the defence and midfield is pretty much sorted, there is yet more panic about this illusive striker. I really do wonder whether some people just sit on here waiting for us to sign someone all day every day for the summer break. This is clearly a big deal for those at the club as we have seen from the supposed bids we have made. It's looking increasingly likely we won't get Long, Maynard or any of the other big names mentioned but for fooks sake have some patience. There are still 3 weeks of transfer activity left and as one or two others have eluded to, the start of the Premiership may well play a very big part in us being able to sign one of our current targets or another name on the list we haven't seen, possibly on loan.
Blinking Blue Owl Posted 9 August 2011 Posted 9 August 2011 We do need a new striker simply because we are not playing the same way as last year . This present squad has had it drummed into them that we defend as a team as we did on Saturday so don't expect too many goals from midfield. With a top striker we can afford to get a goal then see the game out with the whole team pitching in for a one nil . I think there will be more one nil to us this season than any other score line .

Before making that sort of claim, at least watch us in a match where we're able to play the way we did last season.
