Turning the streetlights off at night

Recommended Posts

Where I live, they seem to be turning the streetlights off between about 1am and 5.30am. Obviously this is to save money / power, which is fundamentally a good thing.

Does anybody else live in an area where they're doing this and what do you think about it?

I live at the bottom of a cul-de-sac, which only has one lamp anyway, and it's now pitch ruddy black. When I wake up in the night to go for a slash, I end up banging into everything and waking the misses up because there's absolutely no background light. Plus it doesn't seem too good for security.

Do you not have your own lights to switch on in your own home :/ ? Or when you say you live at the bottom of a cul-de-sac, is it literally at the bottom of a cul-de-sac. Like, in a box?

We don't have any streetlights in the village I live in. It's never been an issue, really - you just adapt (turning the lights on inside your house, for example, when you need to get up in the night!) The only time it's really a hassle is when I've walked up to the pub in daylight, so forgotten to take a torch with me, then have to walk home in pitch darkness - yes, I have actually been known to walk straight into parked cars! >_< That shouldn't be such an issue if they're not turning the lights off until 1am in your area, though. :dunno:

Sounds like a lovely spot to live in.

There's one right outside my pissing window. Wish they'd turn it off. Not far from the city centre with about 40,000 students so I suppose they serve a purpose. Don't see why they don't turn them off in villages though.

council turn off the lights to save money fair enough, but their council offices are lit up like a Christmas tree at night

It makes you wonder where the councils would stand legally wise IF someone fell over at night and injured themselves in a dark street where there are lights, that are not switched on, and then proceeded to put in a claim.

It's actually better for security. burglars would rather umble around under lights than in absolute pitch black.

It's an absolute nightmare getting home though if you are coming in from town at 4am, seriously difficult not to fall over or into something, if it wasnt for the light on my phone I would be fcuked.

The uglier the residents the darker the street should be - which is why my village has lamps which could give you a tan if you walked up to the pub and back without adequate protection.

On the other hand, it doesn't half increase the risk of attack by Mothra.

No worries...

I`m half man half bat. "Manbat" (not to be confused with Batman for copyright reasons).

I have the body of a bat but wear man clothes and always use echolocation to find my way home from the pub. If i`v had a few too many i just get the Mrs to pick me up...

Not a fan of whenever do it on the motorways though - can neverreally get the highbeams on aswell because there's always something coming the other way too

Seriously, do you NEED the high beams on for motorway driving?

Heaven forbid that they should ever turn off the lights in Market Street

It would be a disaster for commerce and I imagine that the former Lord Mayor would have something to say about that

I imagine when they turned them back on someone would be caught with his trousers down.

I have no street lights out ide my bedroom window. I lts in the loft of a converted house. On some night I do have the moonlight. I get to the batroom OK but the room seems darker on the way back. But turning the room light on would not work as I would have to get out of bed to turn it off,

They are very useful for staggering back home from the pub.

Not irritating, not like the bloody stairwell lights in the building opposite my window - very irritating when that goes on every 5 minutes and the light shines right in my face while trying to sleep.

They have turned off 13,000/26,000 here in Northampton that includes in Parks (although they have been forced to turn them back on in one of them) there is one outside my flat, yes it is off :P

But they have been turned off in allyways and that i do think is dangerous qas it too dark and at this time of year i do not think it's that safe. The main road by my estate has all of them out except for at Road junctions.

Brilliant idea, well its always worked in the past when im drunk with ugly birds

I can see your point, but if you have to go somewhere on foot and you can't see a thing in front of you or even maybe at the back of you not good

I have heared of this idea before where I live I think. But our town is dangerous enough with lights on now, never mind with them off.

Looking at street lights at night/early morning is great. I think they look good. Plus, they are a nice guide when I am walking home from town/pub in the early hours
