Should the Motorway Speed Limit be increased to 80mph?

  1. 1. What do you think should happen?

    • It should be kept as it is, at 70mph
      11
    • It should be increased to 80mph, and everything else stay the same
      23
    • It should be increased to 80mph and rigorously enforced, with more coppers, more cameras, and possibly some sort of fast flying fire-breathing dragons

    • You should be able to go as fast as you want, like in Germany, with the only restriction being your own fear

    • I cannot comment, I don't know what a motorway is

It won't change a great deal many will still plough along at 90 and let's be honest I'd say you have to be pretty unlucky to get brought up for that, motorway speeds between 70 and 100 are something I'd say the authorities are pretty relaxed about in this country. For the 4 lane bits eg M1 Junctions 3-5, the new bit at Luton and 24-26 I'd scrap the limit in outside lane.

New drivers should however have to do motorway driving as part of their tests however. So many middle lane wankers out there.

This

People need educating on how to use Motorways properly, then everybody can get alot less frustrated and go a little bit faster!

Please don't ever try that if the new law comes in. lol

80mph/10 + 8mph

Therefore 80mph+ 10% (8mph) + 3mph = 91mph.

My Bad..........you're right!! Let's just say - it's been a long Monday at work!! Maths was never my strong point.....or any other subject for that matter!!

I seem to remember them saying a few years ago that reducing the speed limit would improve travelling times from A to B. That if everyone took their time, there would be less sharp braking & less traffic jams. So why increase the limit & have even sharper braking??

I do agree that people having to have motorway lessons as part of their driving test would be of benefit to everyone.

I see no difference to driving at 70mph and having a wank to driving at 80mph and having a wank.

Consequently, I am in favour as it means I'll be home quicker to get tidied up afters.

To be honest the issue with having a wank in the car is never normally the speed for me, it's the fact I'm never prepared and as such I always spend a good few minutes with one leg on the dashboard trying to untie my left shoe to get my sock off for use an a makeshift spuff rag.

Spunk on hand - out the window or dry by vent - job done.

What I struggle with is teasing my nipples with the other hand while steering with a knee.

If you look in Wilkos for a short handled feather duster you should be able to get that in your mouth and use that to get them nipples teased, whilst leaving one hand free to swear at nobheads who cut you up - they can't get off the hook just because you're having a quick game of four wheel backstroke roulette

The 70mph speed limit is out of date because it's based on archaic stopping distances, they relate to a Ford Anglia I do believe. It isn't rigorously enforced and everyone always breaks it anyway so I doubt changing the law would make much difference in practice. I'm in favour of raising it but people need to learn how to use motorways properly, nothing more irritating than some twat hogging the middle lane or driving at dead on 70 in the fast lane. Berks.

I refer the honourable gentleman to an earlier reply.

There's no such thing as a fast lane. There are overtaking lanes./pedant

And what is the current Mrs Daggers doing whilst all this is occuring?

Cooking? Washing? I don't know, some woman housy shit. Question stuff like this and you make discoveries. Discoveries ruin relationships. Don't ask women about what they did during the day is always my moto. That and 'listen to stuff on headphones a lot'.

This is a really good point and one I thought about whilst studying for the theory test; what are the stopping-distance stats actually based on? Because from say 70mph it'll take a 15 year-old Ford Fiesta a hell of a lot longer than a Bugatti Veyron with an air-brake...

Now I come to think of it that really stopping distances really are a ridiculous thing to state as fact in the highway code - I mean it depends on literally everything: the car, the tyres, the brakes, the road surface, the weather, the force the driver is able to put onto the pedal... :dunno:

Rather keep it as it is than put it up to 80 and have it rigidly enforced.

What I'd like to see is no limit, but be far more stringent in teaching and enforcing rules of the motorway. I seem to remember reading somewhere that while the average speed of a car on the motorway has increased in the last however many years, the number of accidents has actually decreased. It's idiots that kill, not speed.

I think it should be kept as it is. Going from 70 to 80 uses 28% more fuel, and the rule isnt even enforced. If you want to speed no one stops you as it is.

I'm with Trav on this one. The "berk" driving at 70mph in the overtaking lane (NOT the "fast" lane) is completely within his rights to do so.

If you are right up his backside, then it's YOU who is the dangerous driver, not him. Not that you'd ever have this problem with me, as I stay in the left hand lane until I need to overtake, as we are all TAUGHT TO DO. And that's what you want isn't it? People to learn how to use the motorway properly? Maybe you ought to re-read your Highway Code.

As for whether the speed limit should be raised to 80mph, I'm not really that bothered. It will irritate me though if I'm overtaking someone in the right hand lane and someone comes tearing up behind me flashing me because they now think I ought to be going 90mph

Agree about the middle lane hoggers though. They can go to hell..
