Watford Post Match Thread

Solid first half against a team that couldn't score in a *insert joke here*.

Second half a real bore-fest, and frustrating to watch for any enthusiastic football fan.

Should've/could've scored about five goals easily, but the players just didn't want to.

Still shit from corners, mind you.

Not going to argue with the final outcome, but they could've scrapped the second half altogether so everyone would've been able to get home a bit earlier.

Felt like they knew they'd won the game and were saving energy for Saturday, good win, so comfortable against a poor side

If you wanted to go that badly then I don't think anyone would have stopped you

If we'd lost this would be a far longer thread than it is at the minute!

Completely a 45 minute performance. Looked happy to keep it tight and make sure we didn't concede 45-60 and then never reached the heights we did before then. I'm not going to complain because we won but it would have been nice to have kept the tempo and attacking intent and really smash them to help the goal difference because they were very poor. Their number 3 was getting done all first half but we hardly ran at him second half.

Johnson showed more of the class and better fitness than previously, Peltier and Nugent again put in good performances and St Ledger looked like he really wanted to impress, certainly better on the ball than Mills.

Bit quiet but I expect that on Tuesdays and when teams bring a minibus' worth of a following. Cold.

Would have been very quiet on Tuesday and I'm surprised there was even a minibus of supporters!

Lets just say that at the final whistle I clapped the result, not the performance. We did enough tonight so no complaints, same again at the weekend and then we can put the performance in at West Ham.

If only we went all out attack second half, and unlikely as it is drew 2 2! I can see the topic headings now! Why don't we sit on a lead blah

Disappointed we didn't go for the jugular, there were more goals to be had in that game two more would have pushed us up to 9th and brought the goal difference of Southhampton/WHU a little closer.

With how close this league is goal difference could be what decides 2/3 and 6/7th places.

It didn't need all out attack it just needed us to carry on what we were doing in the 1st half they actually had more chances to score when we sat back in the 2nd half than when we attacked them in the first where they were never in it.

Professional job last night. Impressed with the midfield in the first half. King, Johnson, Wellens, all looked good. I felt Abe was less in the game, but then, if all he does all game is send over one or two crosses per game like he did for Beckford's goal, then that'll do me.

Make no mistake though, Watford were not a good team. They should consider it a good season if they avoid relegation.

I've heard that tired argument countless times and it doesn't wash. First we've tried the negatve way for season upon season and it just hasn't worked. As DavieG says of last night - sitting back allowed the opposition more chances than pressing early. It nearly always does.

Secondly there was no way Watford were going to get two goals against us. They were so bad they were lucky to get none.

Does anybody else think Watford had slightly strange tactics last night?

1st half they played two up top along with two wingers but as the game wore on by the 70th minute when they needed to be chasing the game they'd ended up playing a 4-5-1 getting every man back behind the ball!

Nice to get the three points, but performance wise it was the same old City. So unenthusiastic I could not even be arsed to post even the shortest of posts when i got in last night.

So, for what it is worth, my impressions of last nights game.

First of all I thought our back 5 all played reasonably well, some moments of uncertainty, particularly the centerbacks but some pretty solid play too. What was odd though was a sort of collective unease that seemed to affect the whole defence, fortunately Watford were so awful that it barely mattered.

Midfield was somewhat patchy, Johnson in the holding role showed a quickness in setting up play that Wellens simply cannot manage when playing deep, and as a result we got forward with more intent than we have seen of late. He was quick and neat and looked in total control, though he was never really pushed and never tested defensively. I really liked Abe on the right, he started really well. combined well with the excellent Peltier and the cross for Beckford was first class. He tired badly though, was taken off after about an hour and could have been replaced even earlier. Hopefully this was down to his international commitents.

The Wellens/King pairing played more or less the same role, as they so often do when they paired together. Using two players to play just one position is a nonsense and although both played reasonably well I got the impression that either one of them could have done the job on their own. With the pair of them playing pretty central, Konchesky had no cover on his flank but fortunately Watford were so bad it didn't matter, the City fullback 'owned' the left flank and was more than decent throughout.

With Wellens playing further forward than of late, he was much more effective in the first half and some of his balls into the box were pretty dangerous. His play deteriorated badly second half when he took up a more defensive position and was instrumental in inviting Watford back into the game. King looks better now that he is not playing quite so far forward but was still a little off his best.

Up front Nugent continues to really impress me, plays with a smile, chases everthing and is starting to score regularly, (4 in 8 I think). Beckford looks lazy in comparison but is a different sort of player, if we can feed balls into his feet instead of into the channels I am sure he will do well.

Overall the performance was decent first half and somewhat lackadaisical second, as so often with us this season we got the result because some of our better players got the job done, individual performances made the difference but team play remains poor. Our shape is still not great and there are times when our players do not seem to really know their roles, not a big problem last night but against better opposition I think it will be a real problem.

Couple of plus points even so, I like the Peltier/Abe pairing down the right, looked ok when it was tried a few games ago and was good, first half at least, last night. Given our lack of options in wide positions I think It is something that should be persisted with. Nugent is looking better with every game and along with Beckford should be able to score regularly if we can give them the service.

Pretty dull game, first half we played some decent stuff, the second half was a non-event really.

St Ledger slotted comfortably into Mills' position and gave a solid display, along with Peltier and Konchesky. Bamba was a little too casual on a couple of occasions, needing to be bailed out excellently by Wellens afer carelessly passing it wide of Kasper and nearly into the path of Iwelumo. Kasper made a super save in the second half and commanded his area well again.

The midfield did well in the first half, Johnson looks very composed on the ball, while Wellens' was much better before the break. King played a couple of good through balls that could've brought goals and had one lovely shot tipped away for a goal-kick :dunno:

Up front Beckford struggled, despite his goal which was good to see, though it didn't help being clattered off the ball. Once again Nugent was the shining light. What a good signing he's been, and again his first touch was superb, setting himself up a calm finish.

You should never turn down a win, but there was a chance, with more urgency, to win the game handsomely. It's so tight that goal difference will play a part. I hope, if in a similar position on Saturday, we come out after half-time and have a go.

We didn't need to go all-out attack, we didn't against Derby and still looked like we'd get more goals.

It was highly unlikely Watford were going to get back in the game.

Just listened to the post match interviews on the beeb

Where Sean Dyche has got two clear cut penalties they were denied from i have no idea, i can remember one shout but their player blatently dived and was looking for the penalty.

In the second half?

That was a clear exaggeration.

I highly doubt that 2nd/ 3rd or 6th/ 7th will be decided on goal difference. But if it was, and we were on the unfortunate side, I certainly wouldn't be looking back at this game and saying that we should have smashed in another goal or 2, and that the player's laziness in the second half cost us the season.

I didn't go to the game, but I understand people complainig about how boring the second half was. There was a woman on Radio Leicester last night saying it cost £72 for the family to go and she was a bit peeved that the players weren't trying to get another goal. I can sympathise with that (although like I said, I wasn't at the game so I don't know if they were resting themselves for Saturday, or just being lazy).

What I can't understand is people saying things like "we've missed the chance to score more goals and go up another spot on the table."

REALLY? If I had to choose between two 2-0 wins, or a 4-0 and a 0-0, I know which one I'd choose. Points on the table are infinitely more valuable than goal difference.

Look at the fixture list now. Look at ANY game. I'd take 2-0 for any of those games this season, whether it be to West Ham, Boro or Southampton. Or (no disrespect to these teams) against relegation favourites like Coventry, Palace or Donny.

We won 2-0 and took 3 points. Anyone who is not satisfied by that can do one.
