Listening To Pap

Recommended Posts

Was round the in-laws yesterday, my wife is from a big family and they had a proper houseful and they were playing music using Spotify. It was all Take That, Paco Banton, Paulo Nutini and Paloma Faith. For three hours I had to listen to this pap until everyone was distracted and I got my hands on the laptop.

Neil Young playing Cortez the Killer didn't go down well and I was chucked out of the lounge with my sis-in-law saying she wasn't into this modern rubbish. In fact I had to explain WHO Neil Young was. :o (which poo-poos SPs, great albums that most people don't know threads)

Well, it's hardly party music so I then put on Hayseed Dixie doing Ace of Spades, which everyone took to be sacrilige instead of a fun cover version into a different style.

So I then tried actual modern with a little bit of I Can See Through You by The Horrors. I say a little bit cos I think it lasted 30 secs to be replaced by more Take That.

Ok, so my music didn't agree, but what really does my head in is that they think that because they like Paulo Nutini and Paloma Faith, that means they're in the musical know and very avant garde and daring with their musical tastes. This isn't just an accusation pointed at my in-laws, but in general of people who like those kind of artists... you know them. In the past it's been David Grey or Jack Johnson or Amy Winehouse... all decent musicians, but essentially playing watered down, poppy versions of their genres of music to vast audiences of psuedo-musos.

Annoyingly in my in-laws cases, they all play instruments or sing in bands. I was amazed to find that one of my bro-in-laws who plays and teaches guitar didn't know who Bert Weedon is; he'd never heard of him! :o

I know this all smacks of elitism, and I hold my hand up - but I wouldn't mind if it weren't for the fact that these people exhibit a large measure of musical snobbery, but it's backed up by ignorance.

Fine - enjoy Take That, Paulo and Paloma - just recognise it for the pop disposable fun that it is - don't eulogise over it for hours.

* and yes, I'm doing a 2 hour Neil Young set on the radio tomorrow - but I won't be euologising, just a few facts thrown in between songs and and good number of cover versions too to add some colour.

I feel so much better now that's out!

Snob. :P

Oh, and I like Paolo Nutini (albeit in small doses!)

I know what your saying (although my dad likes neil young), the majority seem to love x factor and the top 40, the Radio one bland nonsense. I quite like the fact most of the music I listen too isnt particualry mainstream. I think most dont really want to search for their music and are happy to buy the stuff they hear on radio or see on tv. I don't unserstand how anyone can be passionate about x factor trash, its like they are brainwashed. It would be nice like you said if they didnt defend the music they listen too but that may be a defensive thing, deep deep down they might realise its pretty shit.

Take comfort in the fact you have good taste in music. ;)

I got properly rounded on for putting on one song after politely enduring their music for 3 hours.

I had a similar bit at a house party last weekend - several hours of horror (Chase & status, Nero etc.) and I go to put on one track by The Who and straight away they turn it back to the crap, didn't last even 30 seconds.

Oh and I like Paolo Nutini.

I think most of the musicians I mentioned that my in-laws liked have done decent stuff, just not great stuff that will stand the test of time.

Why are you so bothered about another persons taste?

You listen to what you enjoy, and they listen to what they enjoy.

Not when I go round their house I don't. :(

Actually, when I have guests I try and put stuff on that everyone might like - I actually own music that I don't like that much for this reason.

I know, I know... all the people some of the time - some of the people all of the time - yadda yadda yadda...

I feel so much better now that's out!

I know exactly what you mean.

A few years ago, I was in a relationship with someone who I enjoyed being with, found attractive & believed we were made for each other in 'almost' every way. The one thing that stood in the way was her love of disturbingly crap music...........as you described - Take That, Will Young, Nutini, et al. All of them frauds!!!

I asked her if there was anything she liked that was a bit "out there"............she said, "yeah, Hard-Fi". I'm ashamed to say that I knew who she was talking about, but thought that she must have misunderstood what I meant. Was there anything from her younger years? She claimed to have liked The Wedding Present, which I could live with, but on further questioning could not name a single track of theirs. I just assumed that she had overheard what she thought were the cool kids talking about.........whilst she tucked into Duran Duran, Rick Astley, etc

I'm also ashamed to say that I bought her the latest installment of Take That.........online of course. I couldn't physically bring myself to walk into a shop & buy it. I made her promise that she would only ever listen to it when I was not around, or at least through headphones. I would be sitting there minding my own business, when all of a sudden Take That would come blasting out. She found it highly amusing, but didn't quite understand the suffering she was putting me through..........like someone scratching their nails down a blackboard. Is there a name for a phobia of all things Take That? If there is..........I've got it.

As 'almost' perfect as I thought she was............it was never meant to be.

Call me names, sleep with my friends, anything..................just don't make me listen to that shit

I didnt fully realise what you were moaning about, I can now have some sympathy and apologize for my outburst.

I had a guitar teacher who had never heard of love will tear us apart... Even when I played it to him it wasn't recognised. Needless to say I ditched him.

I think like me sometimes you are so passionate about music that it somehow frustrates you when others don't seem to care.

Let's try and be reasonable about this - you'll just have to kill them.
