He is only playing because we have no other wingers atm, I expect come January when we bring some personnel in Dyer will be a bit part player and nothing more

I was in France on Saturday evening to take in the Lille vs Brest match.

Lille have probably the most coveted an exiting young wide player in Europe at the moment in Eden Hazard, all of Europe's biggest clubs are courting him.

I've seen him 5 or 6 times live now and I have to say he is sensational if selective in his work and can be anonymous in games for quite long spells.

Whilst in the crowd at the weekend the comparison with Lloyd Dyer are our main wide threat came to mind.

For pace Dyer is quicker, if Hazard has superior close control.

In the end Lille ran out 2-0 winners and after a cagey second half it was Hazard's killer ball into the box that game Sow the chance to kill off the game.

And that's what it's all about, those killer balls. I think an understanding is formed between striker and wide man but a good striker with a football brain will put himself in the right place if the wide man can deliver.

I think Beckford and Dyer will form that understanding and if Dyer can provide one or two killer balls into the box a game his work is done. I would personally like to see him waste less energy is lost causes and save his blistering pace for the moments of the match that can change the game.

He needs to be more anonymous at times and think things through and select his moments.

You didn't just compare dyer to hazard lol

Until David Silver or Ronaldo (or Kebe) join our club, Dyer will continue to play the left wing and make us a more balanced team (remember our midfield with out width - I will never forget Birmingham away under Sven).

Great post but the highlighted bit made me piss.

Useful player to have, not a starter. But no better option currently.

This, although I might argue Vassell would be a better option if fit (but we'll probably have more options by then).

I can't add to this great insight so I'll quote it instead.

No I did'nt. The point I was trying to make was Hazard is more intelligent, and understands you cant run full pelt all game and you need to be selective and clever in how you deploy your best efforts during the game.

I wish Dyer could do the same, it only takes a couple of killer balls a match and it's job done.

I was just kidding, I know what you mean, but the truth of it is that's the difference between a championship player and a prem player :dunno:

I don't think it's too much to ask to have a Championship player who has some technical skill. Other than the fact he is quick what can people say his attributes are? He doesn't even use his pace often enough.

I hate people saying things like 'you don't rate Dyer, but sadly we can't afford Messi'. WTF? We can afford a decent winger. There have been plenty who have performed well for other Champiosnhip teams over the last few years. I'm not saying we get those particular players but we can get ones of similar quality.

People can't seriously think Dyer is the best we can do in the Championship, surely?

lol That wasn't my point at all (although I can see why it came across like that). I don't rate Dyer, but I appreciate he has the ability, on occasion to cause the opposition problems. This is not enough for a team after promotion though.

We can do better.

Sorry I should say the middle part wasn't actually in reply to you, just in general to a number of replies

Seems we agree afterall anyway.

If you want to start the 'we can do better' thing... Look at a number of the players.

Danns, Beckford, Gally, Stevie Howard, Weale.. Plenty of players you can aim the same accusation at.

At the moment Lloyd Dyer is the only proper winger we have.. So let's give him a decent chance

Agreed! Not only that, but how well would other of the so called 'better' Championship wingers perform if they too had had almost 12 months out without a full game. The man's a bit ring rusty possibly and deserves a bit of encouragement perhaps.

Beckford's the only one of those who starts. My point was kind of that Dyer is our best winger. If Howard was our first choice striker you'd have a point.

You might knock the guy but that was a cracking through ball for King's goal. Excellent vision.
