Martin O'Neill agrees to become manager of Sunderland

I had to laugh at the Aston Villa Fan on 606 tonight moaning about O'neil saying he put the club back 10 years when he left because of the money he had spent and expected them to be a top four club and said his decision making was inept. If my team was in the top six playing in europe i'd be happy with that. Some fans don't know when they've got a good thing. Frankly i hope Villa go down if they have fans like that.

Was probably my mate. Lovely bloke but a complete moron when it comes to being a Villa fan and realising what a good thing they had.

I admire anyone who goes to manage Sunderland? The wind is so riotous there you seem to be kicking into it whichever way you're playing. Hell, even the Romans said "enough's enough" not far from Sunderland.

It's the sort of place you'd send Gordon Brown into exile.

Even promotional pictures of the town show a bridge and a lighthouse then turn to the wildlife.

A Victorian bandstand is listed as being one of the "places to visit".

I suppose lots of people have a desire to retire by the sea... my own parents went to Scarborough where the waves are so strong they've even ripped a hotel off the clifftop.

Sunderland is even further north and just look at these pictures of nearby Seaburn beach! Makes you feel freezing cold just looking at em. And when the mist comes down you can't see the sea when you're next to it. http://www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.php?t=456064&page=5

They even have a lift at the seashore pub put so you can get away that much quicker!

Sure, football's the heart and soul of Sunderland and it's not surprising. Non stop exercise must prolong life up there because it's so bleak in winter you wouldn't want to stand still for long.

At least the iron ore works of neighbouring towns provided the excuse for a warm working environment but even they've mostly closed or been mothballed now from what I gather.

So good luck to MON. A traditional hotbed Sunderland may be but I can't ever see such a spartan outpost competing for the signatures of top footballers against the lure of London or the balmy evening air of Barcelona.

They may be holding out for a hero up there - and survival in the Premiership would be a start - but, in the end, MON may well wind up his career like Brian Clough - a somewhat frustrated man who never quite got the chance to bow out in the style he deserved.

It's 2011, nobody needs to live where they play these days, and just down the road Newcastle is a thriving city riding the crest of an upward wave of studentism.

Sunderland will be the new Liverpool....who someone said are like the Leicester of the CChip.

So in theory Sunderland will be the new Leicester.

Get it?

I'll go back home then.....

P.S Sunderland ARE massiver than Leicester!

Just watched his press conference... everyone where he lived had an English team as well as thier first club (obviously his was Celtic), so when everyone supported Manchester United, Liverpool and Leeds, he supported Sunderland.

It was a good press conference actually, although it only showed you little on Sky Sports News. "I shed a few tears when Brian Clough got injured for Sunderland, and I also shed a few tears when he was my manager many years later" lol lol
