MPH Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Martin O'Neill has agreed to succeed Steve Bruce as Sunderland manager, BBC Sport understands.O'Neill, whose last managerial job was at Villa Park, has been regularly tipped for vacant posts at high-profile teams in the last 12 months and was the bookmakers' favourite. The Black Cats are 16th, two points above the relegation zone, which led to Bruce's sacking on Wednesday. The team has won only two of their 13 league games this season. O'Neill, a former Nottingham Forest player, built his managerial reputation at Wycombe Wanderers before successful spells at Leicester City and Celtic. He joined Villa in 2006 and led them to three straight sixth-placed finishes in the Premier League and the Carling Cup final before resigning before the start of the 2010-11 season. He is understood to have met Sunderland's owner and chairman Ellis Short on Thursday evening in London, to negotiate a deal. One of the key aspects of the agreement is said to be O'Neill's agreement to the budgetary constraints at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland's next fixture is a Premier League game against Wolves on Sunday, but O'Neill is expected to take charge after that game. The club is thought to have had O'Neill as their preferred choice to replace Steve Bruce. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/15997197.stm EDIT: where's the belfry?!?!
scottthefox Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 And what? No bitter feelings about MON whatsoever. Dont think he could ever repeat his initial success at LCFC so it was pointless for him to try. Best of luck Martin, you will forever be held in high regards by the vast majority of City fans.
Matt Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Good luck to him, I do think he could do better, perhaps hold out for a Tottenham type job but I understand he supports Sunderland apparently so well done. This is gonna sound like sour grapes and you know bitter we didn't get him back but it's not, honest, because obviously i'm more than happy we have Pearson back but honestly I kind of glad he didn't come back here because I don't think it would have worked out and he end up having tarnished his good Leicester name, I'd be stupid to say I didn't want him back of course I wanted him back and turn back time 11-15 years ago but it wouldn't have happened and I think Nigel Pearson is the better choice for us personally in our current position.
Fox92 Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 I said in the 'Steve Bruce to be sacked thread', Martin would take it, he does support Sunderland. Best of luck to him, obviously I will always like Martin O'Neill. I am the Sunderland fans will welcome him, and I am sure Martin is the man the can take them out of this situation they are in. I'm just glad to see him back in the game!!
Happy Fox Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Sunderland fans are very lucky to have someone of MON caliber managing their club he will turn their fortunes around no doubt, Pearson is doing a grand job for us, and is replicating what MON did for us
purpleronnie Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 No idea he supported sunderland, so my surprise at him taking the job dissipated somewhat.
John Matrix Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 i don't understand why he would would be a Sunderland fan as a kid. anyone know why?
Shrenchel Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 i don't understand why he would would be a Sunderland fan as a kid. anyone know why? When he was a kid, the Sunderland captain was some Irish geezer he bloody loved.
Phube Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 I remember an interview he did with Radio Leicester where he said how he spent his time at boarding school in bed, illicitly listening to Sunderland games on a transistor radio!
One Arm Babba Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Good luck to him, can't help thinking he deserves better than Sunderland. I've always thought they were about as fashionable as Nicks trainers. No doubt he'll be successful but it's a step down from villa really.
ajthefox Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Not really a big fan of sunderland and MON could obviously do better but I hope he does well there.
Head Honcho Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 Not too fussed how they get on..............just hope we replace them in the Prem next season.
Salieri Posted 2 December 2011 Posted 2 December 2011 £10 he's gone by the end of the season I'll take that. He'll stay beyond the season (and do a very good job).
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 I am amazed he has gone there, as I thought he would be looking for a bigger fish. Good luck to him though.
silver80 Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 Good Luck to him. It could be a boy hood dream for him. I still think he will take over Spurs when HR takes over the England job.
Legend_in_blue Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 He's bigger than Sunderland. Strange one. Maybe he will make the club as big as him.
Guest MattP Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 I love the guy but after the Villa job he was always going to have to a smaller job if he wants a chance at a top 4 club.
Nick Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 Good luck to him, can't help thinking he deserves better than Sunderland. I've always thought they were about as fashionable as Nicks trainers. No doubt he'll be successful but it's a step down from villa really. There's nothing wrong with my trainers. Sunderland fans are very lucky to have someone of MON caliber managing their club he will turn their fortunes around no doubt, Pearson is doing a grand job for us, and is replicating what MON did for us Steady on son - it's been three games.
Finnegan Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 Not sure why people think Sunderland are some tiny club that O'Neill is way beyond. They gave Bruce tidy money to spend, they've an enormous ground, big fan base, lot of potential.
