StanSP Posted 13 December 2011 Posted 13 December 2011 Have Scotland done anything good this year? Seeing Shane Williams score with his last ever touch in international rugby was very fitting. Andy Murray got to the semi-finals of Wimbledon this year, don't you know
Finnegan Posted 13 December 2011 Posted 13 December 2011 Whilst I was obviously very pleased for Shane to go out in style, there was something very sad about watching him play his last ever international. The word legend is completely overused in sport but he's clearly someone who'll go down in history as one of the greats of the game. Best "little man" of his generation, bar none.
Narborough_fox Posted 13 December 2011 Posted 13 December 2011 Andy Murray got to the semi-finals of Wimbledon this year, don't you know He's British, remember, until he loses so he was actually Scottish only when he got knocked out.
Uncle Albert Posted 14 December 2011 Posted 14 December 2011 Darren Clarke winning The Open or the Ashes.
Father Ted Posted 14 December 2011 Posted 14 December 2011 For me, Nole winning Wimbledon was massive, but on a closer note I would have to say our victory at Pride Park - it genuinely was like watching Brazil that day.

Mack Posted 15 December 2011 Posted 15 December 2011 I think some of the responses on this thread prove that this has been a poor year for stand out mainstream sporting achievement. Vettel's performance this year has been record breaking and bad news for F1 at the same time. I think I would plump for Cavandish and his Green Jersey, but because it's not a mainstream sport in this Country I don't expect he will get much recognition for it. If he does well in the Olympics next year he will be a National hero.
ACF Posted 15 December 2011 Posted 15 December 2011 Being in Melbourne on the 1st day of the 4th test match. Bowled 'em for 96. Amazing. Being in Melbourne on the 4th day of the 4th test match. Won it. Pure jubilation, seeing as I was with my Aussie mates.
Jordan Posted 15 December 2011 Posted 15 December 2011 I think some of the responses on this thread prove that this has been a poor year for stand out mainstream sporting achievement. Perhaps, but then again, we had Barcelona's remarkable season, with their comprehensive Champions League final win at Wembley perhaps the exclamation point on an argument that they may be the best club team of all time. For slightly less mainstream sports, Djokovic ans McIlroy were mentioned. And what about Geoffrey Mutai, who set course records in winning both the Boston and New York marathons? Here in the U.S., Game 6 of the World Series will be remembered as one of the wildest, most thrilling games in a league championship series. And I think nearly the entire country would agree that the Dallas Mavericks defeating LeBron James and the überannoying Miami Heat in the NBA Finals was a great sporting moment (one everybody was hoping for as soon as James announced he was "taking his talents to South Beach" in the prior offseason).

acooling08 Posted 15 December 2011 Posted 15 December 2011 Kane's return to WWE last night. Thought we were talking about 'sport'?
Guest Bilo Posted 19 December 2011 Posted 19 December 2011 The Ashes. Absolute perfection from an English point of view.
Finnegan Posted 19 December 2011 Posted 19 December 2011 It's a little bit different with scrum halves though, really. It's a given that they'll be of Gregan, Peel or Stringer's size. And even so, I don't think you can honestly sit there and say that Gregan had the same watch-winning brilliance that Williams has had throughout his career. Especially when you consider Shane's been doing it in a far inferior side, at times almost carrying Wales. There's a reason most pundits, in both hemispheres, have been calling him one of the best in the world for the last few years. Former player of the year, n'all. This is one of the few occasions I think I can comfortably big up a Welsh talent without being accused of scarlet-tinted bias.
