Best Sporting Moment this Year?

Recommended Posts

So, with 2011 drawing to a close, was discussing with a few mates today what was your favourite/best sporting moment of the year?

I'll kick us off with my two.

England absolutely slaughtering Australia down under to retain the Ashes. Just everything about the whole series was superb.

Novak Djokovic winning Wimbledon and the US. Two monumental victories, especially the way he won the semi and final at the US, some of the best, most exciting tennis I've ever seen.

So, give us yours. Whether they're personal to you, Leicester, your nation, your particular sport, whatever.

Personally i think the ashes was crap lol

Would have to say Cadel Evans in what was an epic tour de france and having him take over the yellow jersey in the last time trial was amazing.

Similar theme, Cavendish winning the green jersey and winning on the Champs Elysees.

And the Ashes, of course.

Probably the handball world championships. The atmosphere in the country, the phenomenal performance by the men's national team and the utter sublime final that had everything but the right winner. Next to that I'd probably place the unexpected resurgence of the Danish national football team that culminated in that surprisingly comfortable final group match against Portugal.

The Djoker has been pretty special, but he's just my least favourite of the top four.

Ashes, even better as I was in Sydney for the finale.

India finally winning the World Cup after so long. seeing Tendulkar over-joyed because of that. And the way we won it too, Dhoni smashing a six in to the stands for the winning runs.

I love my India

Obviously never going to be in contention (and bear in mind I watch basically only football) but Huddersfield v Peterborough was unreal.

Stage 18 of the Tour de France for me. The whole tour was good, but that stage was something else.

United - City is up there as a pivotal moment, but for me personally Waghorn smashing in the winner against Bristol City in the 92nd minute is sporting highlight of the year. It was the first game I had attended since 2004 and I remember leaving the stadium with a massive smile truly believing that this was going to be our year. I think it was our 6th win in a row so you could sense in the stadium and in the pubs afterwards that people were really confident that we were going places. I know we ended up with nothing, but the feeling at the time was pretty damn special.

That games up there for me too on a personal level. The girlfriend had given me the elbow that week and I was feeling pretty glum. When that ball left Waghorn's foot and smashed into the back of the net, everything was forgotten and I had a huge smile on my face for the rest of the night. It's great how football can make you feel sometimes.

Japan winning the FIFA Women's World Cup.

As an aside, that game was a million times more enjoyable to watch than the final in South Africa 2010

Has to be the Ashes.

I'll never see something that emphatic again from the England team in Australia.

Unbelievable.
