I'm interested to know, how you think he will do at Sunderland? I'm a sunderland season ticket holder.

I've always admired him. I use to enjoy watching his Leicester teams on sky at filbert street make it really diffcult for some of the 'bigger' teams (in terms of budgets) I'll never forget Rio ferdinands debut for leeds, he got well and truly bullied there - especially from set pieces.

What are the plusses and minuses of having him at the helm?

Also I hope Leicester come up this season. Sick of playing against the likes of fulham and wigan who only take 2 coach loads of fans, its a joke.

ferdinands uncomfortable debut was under Peter Taylor! O'neil had no money, team full of basic players but finished in the top ten every season and won 2 out of 3 League cup finals! and because of him i can say i've seen my team win a trophy twice and beaten the likes of man u,chelsea, newcastle, liverpool, tottenham and arsenal in my lifetime! thank you martin!

He'll get Sunderland to top ten by the end of the season. Have no doubt of that....

You'll be hard to beat and have a team that you can be proud of once again. You'll get 110% from each and every player too.

He might take his time, but next season you'll be in the top ten. Good times ahead.

Top 10 will be tough this year because of the poor start under bruce.

As long as we can finish in the top 10 next season and settle the score with the scum down the road in march....I'll be happy.

And the league cup should make him and all time legend, especially when you look at the top 6 thesedays - so far ahead! Hard to see it happening again.

If the board back him financially then there's no reason why next season Sunderland won't be up around 6th/7th/8th, breaking into the top 4 or 5 is going to take a bit more time. He was building nicely at Villa but sales of key players kept scuppering his progress.

Excellent manager who deserves a crack at getting to the top.

There is defo money behind us.

The 1 and only concern I have about him is our youngsters. We have some superb academy prospects, not sure if hes too clever at bringing the kids through.

Like any manager in modern day football mate it's a big risk to bring em through...

If he thinks they are good enough he will play them in time...

Oneil brought Heskey through.. Then again, Emile at that age was very very good.

Yeah heskey he was class, just wish you could have been more agressive/confident. Still had a great career though. I hope MON can turn connor whickham into a player!

Anyway cheers for your feedback and hopefully we play you next season.

You will become the masters of the set piece, particularly from corners. Although having seen your goals vs. QPR, MON is well on his way to getting those sorted.

Can we have him on loan to sort out our woeful delivery from them please? lol

Your reference to Wigan and Fulham is true. There is too much tinpot in the Premier League, but unfortunately we are not amongst them. Hopefully normality will resume within a couple of seasons and the likes of tinpot Fulham, Wigan, Bolton, Swansea and the like will be no more.

You'll do fine. The work ethic will be strong and O'Neill does create an almost siege mentality.

The football might not always be pretty but it will be effective. He'll be a huge improvement on Bruce, that's for sure.

Posted

I seem to recall O'Neill bringing Stuart Campbell, Stuart Wilson and Stefan Oakes through the academy as well... all players who haven't really done much since.

Posted

O'Neil was good at spotting nobody's. Who were Elliot, Izzet etc before they came to Leicester?

He turned Milner, Young and Downing into top players as well.

I'm over the moon hes our gaffer. Just pleased we are going to have proper game plans, already an improvement on bruce.

Looking forward to seeing how we shape up in the coming months/years. cheers for your feedback. And good luck for the rest of the season, I'm going to keep you in my coupons!

You'll overachieve basically. However good you think your squad is, you'll finish 2/3 places higher. I'd anticipate 9th for you this year, a little higher next. Times have changed and it's impossible to break the top 5/6, but you'll be best of the rest soon, possibly with a few good cup runs. Good luck!

Personally I think O'Neill has seen his best days behind him. He will achieve for you just about what he did for villa. Perhaps you should go on the Villa chat site if you want an appraisal of how good he is now, not how good he was for us.

Posted

If he brings in a quality bunch of backroom bods (he may well have done this already, excuse my ignorance if he's appointed them already) to do the day-to-day stuff he'll come and do his diamond encrusted 5 minutes team talk on a Friday. He'll stick up for his players if you get a shit ref. He'll also find you some bargain basement price players who are as just as good as the shit squad players the other teams pay over the odds for.

You are in safe hands.

If I had hero's he'd be one of them

The man's an absolute legend. You can look at what he did for us with a limited budget- with consistent top 10 finishes and 2 league cups.

You can look at Villa as an example of how good a manager he is. Probably a mid-lower table team when he came, and got them consistent top 6 finishes- and wasn't too far from qualifying for the Champions League if I remember right? And I don't think he had a lot of money there too. Villa haven't been doing anywhere near as well since he's left despite buying Bent, NZogbia etc....

I'm confident that he'll get you a stable finish this season; top 12... then push on next season for top 8; no doubt about that. Hoping Sunderland do well now; good luck!

He will be great for you, I have the utmost respect for the man. He likes things done his way and won't be bullied by the people upstairs but that's not a bad thing. Whilst O'Neil likes to use wingers and a big man I think it unfair if we were ever thought of as a long ball team like those under Allardyce etc. He simply plays effective football using available talent when he can get it, very much like Brian Clough, though he doesn't readily admit that. Every player will be there for a specific purpose and know what his job will be for the day and he'll have them 100% wound up. I remember when we beat teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea etc, the media all went on about how THEY played poorly and not how well we had done. Yet if you looked at our midfield in Lennon, Izzet, Savage and Guppy, you had someone protecting the defence and passing it out short (Lennon), someone to break play up albeit sometime like a headless chicken (Savage, but lets face it, we loved him for it at the time), someone with that little bit of flair and instinct (Izzet) and someone who wasn't quick and full of tricks on the wing but ala Robinson under Clough, give him a foot and he'd float that ball into the danger area (Guppy). This teamed up with a big 'die for the cause' defence who caused havoc from corners and decent firepower up front, I still get misty eyed thinking about it all.

As for Connor Wickham, I think he's just the promising raw young talent that will flourish very well under O'Neil. He will turn them round but I just hope that your supporters don't get to be like the thick Villa fans i.e. forget that they were in the relegation zone when he took over and then after 3 consecutive top 6 finishes start to criticise him heavily. Sometimes you have to be realistic and understand that for the most part, those with the most money will get into the top 4-5, though O'Neil will keep you believing that there's a chance you can go all the way which is all we can ask for really, so get on-board, get behind him and enjoy the ride!

Happy New Year to you all up there!

O'Neill is great with working with what he's got. If you have some youth players coming through who Steve Bruce threatened to play but hardly ever did, then O'Neill will ensure that they get some action, and probably do very well.

The one downside of O'Neill is his reluctance to spend money.

Whickham is the kind of player who will thrive under MON, you have a good team in place anyway, just need the O'neill factor to kick in!

Thanks for all your feedback, all seems so positive. With a combination of time and money I think he'll have us 'the best of the rest' (top 6 out of bounds - on another planet)

I know this is nowt to do with the foxes, but check this out - Another Howler today from Howard Webb: http://www.101greatgoals.com/gvideos/worst-penalty-decision-ever-leighton-baines-v-sunderland/ The 'foul' is shown from about 30 secs in.

What makes it worse is it took him 5 seconds to give it...cos he clearly didn't have a clue and just guessed! Send him to the championship ;)
