Mack Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 I was thinking about Man City's squad. And it dawned on me that their unlimited and unrivalled supply of cash has created a new brand of footballer. The 'He who is on a sack load of cash a week but never plays and never shows any interest in a transfer' breed. Wayne Bridge Stuart Taylor Santa Cruz (on loan but being paid by City and has turned down transfers) Michael Johnson To name a few, then there is the Tevez saga, something that would never happen anywhere else because of the money involved. Even Chelsea would not allow that scenario to evolve. Add to that Adebayor who went on strike before being paid by City to jog along to Spurs, these situations that are unique to City are unsavoury to say the least. If the Arabs got bored are pulled the plug Manchester City have a very long way to fall.
Bryn Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 Such players have been around for years now. Winston Bogarde the stand out example, point blank refused to be paid off and go find regular football despite being capable of playing at Champions League and International level. Also, Man City might not necessarily be ****ed if the Arabs left... they've converted a hell of a lot of their investment into equity. The players, the training developments, the stadium, are all assets attached to the club, which gives it intrinsic value. Plus, the way their owners have gone about their business suggests to me they're actually very serious and skilled, rather than potentially whimsical as many other owners (possibly even ours) seems.

I cant agree with the last point. The club made a £135 million loss last financial year. That is not building anything skilled, it's just throwing their huge fortune at a play thing.
Alexikokopops Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 Stuart Taylor did it for years before Man City. He's made the fewest professional appearances of a footballer during their career (obviously his career hasn't ended yet so there could be more). I wouldn't say it's a new thing since Man City came along, but I'd imagined it's happened a lot more since Sky invented football in 1992.

What they've built is a team that won the FA Cup last season and is currently sitting top of the Premier League. And anyway, contracts are a two way thing. If you don't want to keep a player for three years on mega bucks, then don't give him a three year contract on mega bucks. A club can't complain if after a year they don't fancy paying him any more, cos both parties have signed on the dotted line, and if the player wants to let his contract run out, then he has every right to do so.

I agree, but the only way to attract good players to a team like City is by paying over the odds. Which they do all the time, and don't care if the player rots on he sidelines taking 100k a week for the privilege. They are the only club in the World that can do that, for me it's something new.

breadandcheese Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 I am far from socialist but I find something disgusting about an individual spending £800million on what is a toy.
jonthefox Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 I am far from socialist but I find something disgusting about an individual spending £800million on what is a toy. would you find it disgusting if he spent it on us?. Just asking.
breadandcheese Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 would you find it disgusting if he spent it on us?. Just asking. I would. There's just so much Sheikh Mansoor could do with £800 million for the betterment of science, technology, medicine, etc. Instead he's spent it on what is nothing more than a toy. Granted, it's his money, so he can spend it as he wants, but it doesn't stop me having an opinion on how he chooses to spend it.
gazfox9 Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 Wayne Bridge is a disgrace of a footballer. Sat at Man City dragging his 100k a week, prob too busy banging his saturday girlfriend to find the time to play any football.
Leicester_Loyal Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 Man City need to get players like Santa Cruz, Bridge and Adebayor off their wage bill.
syston_fox Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 Michael Owen is the one that frustrates me most. He's so far down the pecking order at United and could easily still cut it with a mid-table premiership team. if he had gone looking for a game rather than sitting at home whilst his team mates earnt their wages then he could possibly have forced his way into the last world cup squad. For someone who is meant to love playing the game, its hard to respect him now and he will soon just disappear and retire without anyone batting an eyelid.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 22 January 2012 Posted 22 January 2012 No mention at all of Franny Jeffers? Mad. Still plays for Newcastle Jets in the A-league with Michael Bridges.

Sat at Man City dragging his 100k a week, prob too busy banging his saturday girlfriend to find the time to play any football. He been made to train with the youth team for the season as Mancini left him out in the cold. Lets be brutally honest here, he is a human being paid '£100k a week' of which probably nigh on 50% goes to the government. He is hardly going to take a pay cut to say £50k a week...... I would be doing exactly the same probably, whether it be right or wrong.
Captain... Posted 23 January 2012 Posted 23 January 2012 Salif Diao, according to Liverpool fans, did the same thing, he spent 5 years at the club and made 37 appearances, he rejected all attempts to sell him and let his fitness go to the point where no teams would buy him, ran out his contract and left on a free for Stoke where he became a model pro again. I really don't think the Bosman ruling has benefitted football in general, it has just allowed footballers to hold clubs to ransom and demand bigger wages, signing on fees and longer contracts.
jonlcfc1990 Posted 23 January 2012 Posted 23 January 2012 Man City need to get players like Santa Cruz, Bridge and Adebayor off their wage bill. I think you will see this in this window and the next in summer they must realise that the new laws on getting into Europe mean they will have to shed some dead weight (just like michelin Johnson )

Earning a 100K a week and not doing anything and then he gets to bang her! if only we all lived like footballers

However, their 50 million a year 'sponsorship' deal allows them to effectively sign a top star every summer and be able to pay a few high earners wages for the year already.
