Stig the Lawnmower Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 has anybody else noticed how crap we are at throw ins? as i understand it, you can't be offside for a throw in, yet no one runs forward to receive the ball. we had umpteen opportunities to do this against forest last night, but either played the 'one-two' (which usually comes to nothing) or threw it down the line and lost it. it happens every game, take note next time. it is something nigel needs to work on, there's very little movement as if no-one knows what to do. we need a throw in coach!
Babylon Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Yes... and I've noticed how we seem completely unable to defend set pieces or attack set pieces. Even with the improved delivery of late we just never seem to look a threat.

Even with the improved delivery of late we just never seem to look a threat. I think this attacking of set pieces has been a feature of the whole season Babs.. I'm sure it's been debated before. Again, the two sides to the argument are: 1. The quality of the delivery isn't good enough 2. Our attacking players don't gamble enough. I still think that 2. Is true. I can't recollect another season like it where some of the beautifully delivered crosses and corners are met with absolutely none of our players being anywhere near getting on the end of stuff. Bet it pisses Stevie Walsh and Young off immensely!
Jimmy Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 on set pieces most of our corners seem to target the near post, so why do we put all our big men to the far post?

I've been saying this since MON left I reckon we lose possession from about 70% of throw ins we take and rarely manage to, or even look like we want to win the ball from the Oppo's throws.

Out Foxed Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 yeah, particularly awful last night. dithering with ball due to a lack of options. pretty basic really, if in doubt just keep going up the line.
brockmyster Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 typical, the one time the set piece deliverly was decent last night the part in the box let us down.
Babylon Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 typical, the one time the set piece deliverly was decent last night the part in the box let us down. Since Marshall came in I think they have improved a lot, for a start he gets it over the first man (Gally and Danns i'm looking at you), and he puts a bit of pace on them.
Guy Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Yes, Marshall looks like he is working on making sure someone in the team can actually take throw ins! He must've learnt his "throw ins" trade from Rory Delap at Stoke me thinks! It is ugly football but effective at times and winning games is what the beautiful game is all about essentially!
Babylon Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Yes, Marshall looks like he is working on making sure someone in the team can actually take throw ins! I was talking about corners.

I agree definately an improvement the pace is key issue, gallaghers are far too weak forcing the header of the ball to generate all the power
broughtonblue Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Got to agree about throw ins, been saying for a while that nobody seems to want to make space to receive the ball. So frustrating!
Captain... Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 I have heard that Marshall has a good throw on him but I don't recall ever seeing him launch one, I even remember him going to take one and Peltier took over and then threw it away. Weird it's like Abe never taking free kicks and Gally taking all the corners, we seem so rigid in what we are going to do at set pieces that there is no variation and it makes us much easier to read and therefore defend against.
Corky Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 He did a long throw on Saturday. Didn't lead to anything though.
Jimmy Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 He did a long throw on Saturday. Didn't lead to anything though. because nobody attacked it or made a run
Guest Posted 29 March 2012 Posted 29 March 2012 For a number of years our set pieces have been diabolical. And throw ins - don't get me started. we may as well just throw the ball to the other team. Leicester have a throw in , ball goes in then back to the person who took the throw in. IF I KNOW THAT SO DO THE OPPOSITION!!!!! Bloody stupid. Of course the alternative Leicester throw in is longer to an opposition player. The only decent throw in is a Peltier throw in to the box. We should just do that more. And when the opposition throw in why don't we have someone defneding the player taking the throw in - as often it goes back to them - you know just like when we throw in. I really don't understand the patheticness of our set play. It's an easy thing to practice and an easy thing to scout. Modernise the training and scouting of other teams, we are still doing the same as in the 1950s.
