FrankieADZ Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 likewise and if we're going to be forced to sit it may as well be on a padded seat especially for my aged arse! Thats the only real gripe i have with our ground I want a padded seat for my butt...cold plastic seats arent nice in winter
RonnieTodger Posted 4 April 2012 Posted 4 April 2012 I do wish it was practical to extend Filbert St. to keep the atmosphere, tradition etc. I like how the likes Villa, Forest, Man United have kept their grounds going and I just wish we had. As for the new stadiums, ours is just a typical bowl like Derby, Coventry, Middlesbrough and yet it's less interesting because it's the same all the way round. I think Brighton have the benchmark for a new stadium in the way they've built it. A large main-stand and a completely unique design.
Captain... Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Impact wise the shops on Burnmoor Street where it comes out onto Walnut Street must have seen a large drop in takings. Based on my experience of the queue size in there, not the most accurate of measures (I'm sure you could go ask them for some figures), when we were at Filbert Street there were always long queues round the shop, on match days now you can just walk straight up to the check out and grab your Yorkie. I would imagine a lot of the small shops around the area took a hit because the Walkers/KP is 200m from Morrison's so all the trade from half time snacks e.t.c and also whatever cut of programme sales they got (if any) has probably dried up. Some people still walk to the KP down Burnmoor St. so its not totally gone but footfall in those two shops is down significantly from the the Filbert St. days. There is also the emergence of the Half Time Orange pub/bar next door to the stadium and its subsequent rebranding and the possible losses to pubs further away. There were two opposite Nelson Mandella park on the Welford Rd that have long since vanished (buildings are still there, looking very sad) but I don't know if that was due to the Filbert St. move they are right next door to the Tigers so they still would have had plenty of fans from there to keep going but both branded themselves as pubs for fans. Also there are pubs on the Freemans Common site which have become "fan pubs" now. I think that any impact it had on shops round Filbert street, would have been counteracted by increase in footfall around the KP, some lose out some gain. I think the one true saving grace about the KP is that it is still in the city and not in the middle of nowhere as some new stadia are. Most people still park and walk in, and if you are going from the train station you can walk, so that is a bonus. Unfortunately we had to move from Filbert Street, when I first started going I didn't hink it was old and shabby because I hadn't been to any other stadium, I think it was only after we got promoted and I started going to a few more away games I realised just how poor it was, that is without even taking into account the capacity.
AyewJoking Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Did we ever really need the new stadium? If we had kept O'Neill and stayed in the Premiership then a new ground was essential. However the new stadium has seen just one season of top level football and Filbert Street was good enough for Division 1/Championship level plus the atmosphere was better. No doubt the new place has made us more desirable in terms of a money making business which is what is most important as the club may have went under without it.

Well, we were well established in the PL, and no-one would have predicted we'd be stuck in the 2nd and 3rd tier for the next decade when plans were drawn up and the wheels were already in motion. With hindsight, we might as well have stayed at Filbert St. for another 10 years at least, but like you said, the club wouldn't have been as attractive to investors.
HEGGSY Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Agree. I'd have loved something with four distinct stands, or at least a clearly defined main stand rather than what we ended up with. A smaller version of FC Köln's Rhein Energie Stadion with four double deckers and the lower tier connected would have looked great. Only just seen this post but, that would have been epic.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 No doubt the new place has made us more desirable in terms of a money making business which is what is most important as the club may have went under without it. Didn't we go bust because of it ?
jonthefox Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 I dont suppose anyone has a picture of the proposed stadium at Beaumont leys do they?. I think it was in the 70's or so.

AyewJoking Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Didn't we go bust because of it ? I meant more desirable to respective buyers and further down the line, players and coaches.
Cropwellfox Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Blimey I'd forgotten about that . T'would be interesting to see what the plans were . I had a set of the plans (see above ice rink post) kicking myself that I don't know where they are now. Remember the stadium being one arena, I think with two tiers all the way round.

Jace Posted 6 April 2012 Posted 6 April 2012 Prefer that to the KP. Would of been a much better stadium if planning permission had been given shame but we are still lucky to have ours now I think considering our finances at the time
OzFox Posted 6 April 2012 Posted 6 April 2012 Outside You sure that's the right city? Looks like a large mountain in the background
