In between now and starting Uni in September, I am considering contacting small and local companies by letter, offering my web design skills/service for free. Knocked up a letter, but I don't know if it's a good idea to do this?

Why not?

Experience is a good thing.

My job search ways are being changed. Next time I sign on I will be on some scheme that helps you after finding a job. Told me today I only need do 16 hours because of my age. Make the rest up with tax credits. They can do an assessment of my entitlements but its confusing. Had something from the tax office which says my earnings in the last tax year was zero yet I was working up to June. Also did four days for an agency at xmas which I have not receive payment details but they said they emailed me.

What I have earnt though in the last year can't make a lot of difference when they calculate it for the assessment. So may put down what it says on the form they sent. It does say P60u on it.

Going to be put on a work program now. basically because the govt have failed to provide enough jobs to go round they are paying organizations to train people in the art of looking for a job. So if a company wants to take on a 60 plus year old with no manual skills in a trade and train him as an apprentice knowing that in a years time they could be claiming pension credits on a four or five year basis I'm your man.

I already know what my CV looks like and how to fill in an application.

Age 60

Dou you drive no

Can you lift heavy weights no

Do you have any qualifications no

Bye next please

On a lighter note there are jobs going here if anyone can get to London.

Posted

job. Croydon?

Who'd pay you to be a prostitute?

Smuts would.

Nah, it aint in Croydon, the main office of the company that are organising them is in Croydon, but as for the job, could be anywhere within Central/South London. I don't even know what it's about, just got told on Wednesday that I had an interview on Friday...interesting.

Had another Email from that company. Still not sure about it. It explains a bit more but what it entails I cant see how they matched My CV to it.

Cant copy and paste a small section.

In In the nearest future, our customer is planning to achieve the expansion of the company throughout the whole United Kingdom, providing local offices and departments in the vast areas, where payments, transfers and foreign exchanges are definitely in demand. Until then, they're trying to fill in personnel with new individuals, which will increase the efficiency of the services that are catering.

There is a list of things dealing with being able to communicate orally and written work to a schedule and organise them and other things.

Obvious places to look for jobs are:

Jobcentre Plus website

This is Leicestershire Jobs

Leicester Mercury

Total Jobs

Oh and depending on what type of job you're after, also try the NHS website and Leicestershire Council websites. The Gov ones.

Having been unemployed myself for the past year and a bit I've finally got a job, albeit part time, working for the Leicester Mercury. Hoping it leads to full time and more money. It really is hell out there trying to find work at the moment and has been for a while, so anyone who is genuinely trying their hardest to find work, you have my sympathy, because it is not fun.

Looks like a commission only selling job.

What I thought. You only have to do a few hours but still wondering why they selected me. My CV has no selling on it. The second Email saysthe company intends to set up offices over a wide area in Britan so want to get sales team in place for customers. So looks like the ones doing it online getthe customers then refer them to new offices. The company have offices inside large stores.

I have to pass some verification procedure. I'd just feel daft if I took it on and was expected to do things that I was expected to know about For anyone who has experience of this sort of thing it would be great as a side earner. They deal with foreignexchange so you woud be setting up the plans forthem and referring customers to others.

So glad i don't have to come in this thread no more.

Yes I've used all them. Doing part time work in a charity shop just voluntary but I'm being trained in several areas. The manager went over quickly the operation ofthe till yesterday but I will be taught more throughely in time. Only till I have been is at the beer festival where just mental arithmitic is needed. This could help me with retail jobs. Maybe a mini-market type.

Was put on dusting the shelves. It has to be done every day even though they don't look like need doing. I expect its not customers but any inspectors that might turn up.

Had my first accident. I had finished one side of a display case rplaced the items and moved on to the other halfwhen there was a rash. A small knick knack had fallen off and smashed into tiny pieces. One of the other lads fetched a brushed while I stayed guarding the breakage. Forgot to mentionitto the manager who had gone out. It is awkward to dust when things are beautifily displayed and you have to take off and replce in a similar way.

I was also asked to put things out on display from the stockroom and allowed to use my inititive where and how to display them.

Over time I expect I'll get some feel over the pricing. I was putting labes on and the manager said what price. Did a load of talking books in cassette format 95p each and a collection was £1.95. Single cassettes we dumped.

The shop seems a bit up market for a charity shop selling better quality of goods. Still donated but don't look so tacky as some. Some good displays too. Going in Saturday 10-1pm. Manager said they would give a reference so after a few weeks I may be able to add retil to myjob search or maybe even sooner.

I can't believe you're even taking it seriously. That 2nd email has obviously been through a crap translator. People who express an interest will be asked to pay start up money. It's a scam.

Posted

Yes It did seem a bad translation to me which has put me off but they are a big world wide company. They have mentioned no fees or rather said there would be none. Of course that doesn't mean there won't be any after all the initation and having been with them a while. In order to get onto the higher level there may be a fee.

What gets me is these things come from employment agencies who obviously do not research all their clients. People who are looking for work should not be misled by those who are supposed to be helping them.

Is that photography related Mikey?

Just looked in the job searches. Primark are looking for a weekend store assistant who can lay out goods in preparation for sale.

I think I can manage throwing clothes on the floor.

There was a job at a butchers which is checking pricing and display is right loggingstock on a PC but it also involves ordering and being a rep meeting people etc Sounds like a 3 piece suit job. Part of the description seems OK.

Thats part of the problem. There are some jobs that I fit part of it but then require things that puts me off or would not suit me.

I thought you hadyour own photography business Mikey? Quite a few of the Mercury photographers are frelance arent they?

I kind of do, yes. But only get odd jobs here and there. Not enough to sustain a living at the moment. Quite a few photographers I know are in the same boat. Only things recently I've done, have been a wedding and taking candid shots at a 2 day NHS seminar. Other bits and bobs here and there too. But I need a regular income, that I know will be in the bank every month.
Posted

Yes I expect it is like that. A few years back there were less doing it and a photographer had a wedding or something every other week. There was the disadvantage though of lugging loads of equpment about with you and the self developing side of it.

If you are interested there is a Q & A evening at the Curve tonight with some ex and present sportsmen. Not well known ones but its being put on as a run up to the Olympics. I was going but the weather has put me off. Will have to remember to take my reporters pad with me and take notes for Citezens eye although John Coster the editor and others may also be there so I won't be needed. I enjoy doing it but there are many jounalists a lot better than me so not looking for a change of career.

Do you know a Andy Williams. He does a lot of photography. Taught a bit of it as well.

Just had this in an email (partly reproduced) only problem is the location. Anyone else want to try?

We are currently experiencing an uplift in warehouse positions available at Caterpillar Logistics in Desford.

Hours of work are 07.00 - 15.00, 15.00 - 23.00, 23.00 - 07.00 working Mon - Fri, with pay rates starting from £6.08pr/hr.

Out of them probably the nightshift would be better. Do trains go to Desford? Last bus is probably 6pm Transport will be the problem.
