ADK Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Thought people might be interested to see the performance targets set by UKSport. The targets are given for each sport in terms of medals. Football isn't included. Super_horns Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Swimming might be a bit hopeful now. I suspect Tom Daley and his partner was the best chance of the medal in diving.. Never know though... Seen some people moan about the lack of "success" so far BUT we all know the top events are to come.and we are looking solid in Equestrian/Gymnastics. Yes the Mens race was disappointing but I think we'll do well in the Time Trial and track cycling.
purpleronnie Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 8 medals in the Athletics is very hopeful isnt it?
Webbo Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 8 medals in the Athletics is very hopeful isnt it? I'd guess that includes silvers and bronzes. Doesn't seem outrageous.
AKCJ Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Athletics includes track and field. Must be at least 40 events in total. So 8 medals from 120 isn't outrageous at all.
Jimothy Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 8 medals in the Athletics is very hopeful isnt it? I guess before any injuries where known they will have expected medals of any colour from Dai Greene, Jessica Ennis, Phillips Idowu, Chrustine Orhoughou (or however you spell it), Mo Farrah (2) and maybe Paula Radcliffe. That's 7 and there's probably a few I haven't heard of who will be expected to medal, I'm sure we have a decent female pole vaulter for instance.
BlueSi13 Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Christ if you listen to the commentators at the swimming you'd think we are winning medals left, right and centre...not consistently finishing near the back of the field. Millions upon millions have been spent upgrading our swimming facilities in order to compete for podium places, aided hugely by these being HOME games, and i personally don't think commentators referring to hugely disappointing performances as "phenomenal", "stunning" and "brilliant", is quite the message we need to be conveying here.
Webbo Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 I know it's early but I'm beginning to think we'll struggle to match last times medal total.

I was thinking exactly the same. Also, and I hope I'm not sounding harsh, but the way they waxed lyrical about Adlington yesterday was ridiculous. She blew the field away 4 years ago, and set word records since, and has fallen back to bronze this time round. It's good, I'm happy she medaled, but it's not amazing, it's slightly disappointing.
davieG Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 It's not the winning it's the taking part. - a phrase echoed by the founder of the Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin That's why all the camera shots on the swimming seem to focus on the middle 3 lanes. and why all the focus is on the winners unless it's a Brit.

Takes me back to school sports day (where I did win some medals)
Webbo Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 Takes me back to school sports day (where I did win some medals) 3rd place in the egg and spoon race isn't all that.
Corky Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 3rd place in the egg and spoon race isn't all that. 1st in the foam javelin is.
Super_horns Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 . .Not having the best of time in the pool it seems..2 more 5th places. Seems like Daley is getitng some stick and personal abuse on Twitter which is harsh. BTW Facecloth that is the 800m where she is most successful rather than 400m where she only just won the last Olympics title and came 4th in the World championship afterwards I think. Was far from a favourite last night although I do think she does herself down a bit.
Guest shearfox Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 I know it's early but I'm beginning to think we'll struggle to match last times medal total. I don't think that will be the case, once we are in the dome and the boxing finals begin we will get medals, also in the rowing and sailing. I think Murray can get a medal in Tennis and Tom Daley could get one in the individual. There are still a lot of opportunities for us to match or surpass the total in Bejing.
BoneDog Posted 30 July 2012 Posted 30 July 2012 I thought Adlington's bronze in the 400m was decent. There was a real scrap on for that bronze medal. The 800m is the race where she'll be more expected to challenge for gold as super_horns said. Hope she does it.
brockmyster Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 The swimming and diving targets were a tad optimistic i think
purpleronnie Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 I know it's early but I'm beginning to think we'll struggle to match last times medal total. Of course we will, last olympics we performed amazingly well, if we come close to matching that it will be a great achievement.
BlueSi13 Posted 31 July 2012 Posted 31 July 2012 Of course we will, last olympics we performed amazingly well, if we come close to matching that it will be a great achievement. Not at all, an utter fortune has been spent on infrastructure and coaching to ensure that this British team can match if not slightly better the Beijing performance, that coupled with these being home games where the support has been genuinely spectacular, it would have been expected that we'd have been really pushing in the majority of the events. After all, the organisers knew that these games would only be truly profitable if Team GB is successful. Therefore 4th was a perfectly acceptable target before these games. However so far it appears as if the opposite is happening, with athletes performing way BELOW their best. Up to now, these Olympics have just consisted of watching British athletes take a pasting on their own turf. Lets just hope the rowers perform because they are looking like our only real hope. I wouldn't bet too much on the track cycling, the rules were changed so no nation could dominate like we did in Beijing, plus our guys are not as strong as they used to be. Lets hope things start to change soon, or the media's mood will begin to change drastically.

Fortunes spent means nothing if the talent can't be found to match that of the last olympics, and just because the athletes did well 4 years ago doesnt mean they'll match it again in london theres too many vairiables, if we come close to the medal total of 4 years ago I'll be happy.

I was hoping to see our athletes performing PB's due to the influence of the crowd and it being a home event. Instead there are loads of our athletes performing terribly.

True in some cases like the diving and canoe guy but we've never had a good record in stuff like judo, shooting and the sports we've just had a team taking part because we're hosts. We've probably spent money trying to prop up the very minor sports at the expense of ensuring we had the best quality in terms of ability and training in the main events like swimming.

TBH I've never given much weight to home advantage, would a swimmer say whilst swimming 'ooo I better go faster because I'm swimming in london'..infact the added pressure of home 'advantage' might have a negative effect.
Leicfox Posted 1 August 2012 Posted 1 August 2012 1st gold medal for GB from Glover & Stanning in the rowing.
