Guest MattP Posted 1 August 2012 Posted 1 August 2012 TBH I've never given much weight to home advantage, would a swimmer say whilst swimming 'ooo I better go faster because I'm swimming in london'..infact the added pressure of home 'advantage' might have a negative effect. It seems to do something though, look at the history of the host nation and they seem to usually over perform at home compared to their recent history. USA in Atlanta being the exception.

I'm sure theres certain things that would give an athlete some advantages like familiarity that would possibly help them...but i think is negligible.

We have definitely over the last 7 years put a lot more funding into finding athletes for 2012, because it is at home, and we have more athletes competing than ever, there is also home advantage in that home athletes will be more familiar with the circuits and conditions, although we have chosen to not exploit this as much as other nations have in the past. Whether the crowd help or not, I don't know I can see it working both ways, did Daley and other choke in the diving because of the pressure, and did the men's gymnasts raise their game because of the support? I can see it helping in football, tennis and endurance sports, to give you that extra push you need to get over the line when you are tired.
ADK Posted 1 August 2012 Author Posted 1 August 2012 It depends on the sport. Some sports involve non standard courses and conditions and therefore our athletes have an advantage in knowing the course and conditions. Some sports are scored subjectively and having a crowd cheer loudly on a good performance might just tip the judges scores up half a point. Some sports will not usually attract crowds and having alot of support may draw a good performance from someone. Their is of course a flip side, added pressure to perform and in some sports where abit of discipline is required it might lead athletes to go off too fast.
BoneDog Posted 1 August 2012 Posted 1 August 2012 We've got two swimmers, Jamieson and Willis, in the mens 200m breaststroke final tonight. They were shit hot in the heats and semis. 1st and 3rd fastest in the semis so they'll be reet in the middle lanes. COME ON LADS!
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 This judo is as absorbing as it is bizarre and confusing, British woman is within a throw of the final, or bronze medal play-off, gone to golden score sudden death. No idea what is going on, but it's great. Edit: She's just ipponed her to get to the final, guaranteed medal, Gemma Gibbons.
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Looks like Murray to face Djokovic in the Semi's that's the Gold or Silver out then.
Captain... Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 We've got men's and women's team sprint finals in the velodrome later too, got to be good for a medal or 2 there, could be a good day for the Great British and Northern Irish Olympic team (or Team GB if you like)
leicsmac Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Looks like Murray to face Djokovic in the Semi's that's the Gold or Silver out then. Best of 3 sets, not 5. Murray has every chance in that format.
Out Foxed Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 gemma is losing kayla harrison was too strong (great achievement for her if you know about her story)
leicsmac Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Good silver for Gemma. 2 golds and 2 silvers within 30 minutes of each other. Outstanding stuff. Given the poor Russian form thus far and with the track cycling all still to come I think finishing 3rd overall might not actually be as far-fetched as people thought!
ADK Posted 2 August 2012 Author Posted 2 August 2012 Still think we'll stuggle to equal the 19 golds from beijing but that might not matter in terms of the medal table.
BoneDog Posted 2 August 2012 Posted 2 August 2012 Adlington got to the final of the 800m earlier. Think she won the heats by about 0.1 seconds (about 7 seconds off WR time) but the two top times were way ahead of everyone else so it will be a battle between Adlington and Lotte Friis of Denmark for gold and silver. WR prediction for one of them. Tomorrow night.
Captain... Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Murray playing later in the Tennis Semi, just watching the other semi, 9-9 in the final set, Murray will face one of these for a medal on Sunday, but which won and which medal? Do I want Federer to win, expecting Murray to lose, so he has an easier Bronze Medal match, or if Del Potro wins, then Murray will stand a better chance to get Gold in the final, but very little chance against Fed if he loses to Djoko, which he probably will.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Swimming 5-7 Hmmm we got 3! Still got the open water swimming to come and I believe were nailed on for medals there, so 5 isn't unachievable. But nice to see you showing the true Leicester "we're crap and don't stand a chance" spirit!
leicsmac Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Best of 3 sets, not 5. Murray has every chance in that format. Toldja. Murray with either gold or silver.

But nice to see you showing the true Leicester "we're crap and don't stand a chance" spirit! I'm actually quite the opposite, even the optimist about Leicester - was just pointing it out!
Jimothy Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Looks like Murray to face Djokovic in the Semi's that's the Gold or Silver out then. Shows what you know Really hope he wins gold now to shove that pessimistic comment up your arse.
Super_horns Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Murray has done very well. Ennis is on target for her best ever score after 4 events...
Webbo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 Swimming 5-7 Hmmm we got 3! 4 isn't it? There is still a medal chance tomorrow but yes the Swimmers have let us down a bit.
dave_the_fox Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 1 silver two bronze mate. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=brit+medals+in+swimming&sugexp=chrome,mod=19&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#hl=en&safe=off&sclient=psy-ab&q=+olympics+medals+swimming+count&oq=+olympics+medals+swimming+count&gs_l=serp.3..0i8i30j0i22l3.2301.2985.0.3084.6.6.0.0.0.0.96.427.6.6.0...0.0...1c.zCuhGBmqzuU&pbx=1&fp=1&biw=1241&bih=593&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&cad=b
Webbo Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 My bad, I though we got 2 medals in the mens breaststroke.
dave_the_fox Posted 3 August 2012 Posted 3 August 2012 My bad, I though we got 2 medals in the mens breaststroke. We had two finalists, Jamieson got silver
BoneDog Posted 4 August 2012 Posted 4 August 2012 I'm not much of a tennis fan but I loved that match winning shot from Murray against Djokovic. That 15 year old who won the 800m swim was fast! She was ahead of WR time right from early in the first length up until the last 20 metres or so when she just fell behind the line.
