BlueSi13 Posted 4 August 2012 Posted 4 August 2012 Absolutely incredible day for British sport, six gold medals in a single day. Amazing. I was critical of Team GB's performance at the start of the games and i still feel that the swimming has been a complete disaster but wow our other hopefuls have really done the job for us. I always look to see how GB does against our major European rivals as well as Australians due to the immense sporting rivalry we have. So far looking incredibly good indeed: 3. Great Britain 14-7-8 (Only nine golds behind the Chinese now ) 5. France 8-6-8 6. Germany 5-10-6 7. Italy 5-5-3 19 . Australia 1-12-7 (Having an absolute stinker so far!) 36. Spain 0-2-1
Guest shearfox Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 Good stuff, an absolute remarkable achievement.
ADK Posted 7 August 2012 Author Posted 7 August 2012 I shouldn't have worried, we've already surpassed Beijing and look to have secured 3rd in the overall standings. That said, i am worried that funding will dry up and we will slide back down next time at Rio.

I think funding will dry up in events we've been poor in, but the lottery funds our successful sports pretty well (although it irritates me the funding has to come from the lottery). As for rio.... I know after beijing few thought we could surpass it but lets face it its highly unlikely we'll ever beat the medal tally of this olympics, but thats ok as long as were still say top 10 I think thats an achievement.
Webbo Posted 7 August 2012 Posted 7 August 2012 I know it's early but I'm beginning to think we'll struggle to match last times medal total. Wtf do I know
Trav Le Bleu Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 Anyone else think we might just get 30 golds? <sharp intake of breath>
Super_horns Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 Anyone else think we might just get 30 golds? <sharp intake of breath> Not now..maybe 2/3 more. Muhammad maybe back in a chance of getting bronze...
Guest MattP Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 3 should arrive in the boxing, Evans, Joshua and Campbell all big faves.

Well McKeever makes it 26 - three boxing finals plus Mo in the 5000 gives us an outside chance with the perfect results.
Captain... Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 We've also got a strong favourite in the women's modern pentathlon, what I find amazing is all the medals we missed out on, off the top of my head: Cavendish in the road race. Pendleton's 2 disqualifications Radcliffe out of the marathon Phillips Idowu in the Triple jump Addlington in the 800m All of these were nailed on golds before the start, The there are all the other disappointing performances, we should have won more in the pool, we let a couple of golds slip away in the sailing, a lot of athletes didn't perform to their best, with injuries and form, synchro diving was another missed medal and open water swim, missed golds and medals in the gymnastics, it seems crazy to say we should have done better in the gymnastics, but if it wasn't for a couple of bad valts Kristian Thomas was on for a medal, Tweddle and Smith could have got golds, we lost out on show jumping individual golds, we also had medal favourites in the BMX, it just seems crazy to think of all the disappointments, but we really could have challenged the yanks and China with a bit more luck, incredible.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 Another interesting point is the events we've won medals in are ones where we've only been allowed to have one entrant. Imagine if we could have had three cyclists in each track race, or rowing? One commentator said that in the event Ben Ainslie won gold, we probably had the best five or six in the world, but were only allowed to enter one.

Thing is the more medals you win, the more medals you are probably going to just miss out on. I'm sure both USA and China have had medals they missed out on too.

Captain... Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 nah Why not Cavendish was hot favourite for the road race, Pendleton would have won the team pursuit if she hadn't been disqualified and probably would have taken sprint gold too, Phillips had jumped further than anybody this year, Adlington was favourite in her 800m race and Paula radcliffe is the best marathon runner in the world. They were 6 golds we were expecting pre-games. Add them to our tally and we are looking at challenging second in the medal table, I am not belittling the achievements because we have been fantastic, I'm just saying we are not far off competing with the USA and China.
Webbo Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 We've won medals we never expected so it's swings and roundabouts.

Paula radcliffe was only ranked just inside the worlds top 50, add to that her poor olympic results over the last 2 I doubt very much she was nailed on for gold.
