iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Thinking of players that never quite cut it with England or didnt get a fair chance .. So far I have: McMannaman, Fowler, A.Cole, Sheringham, Le Tissier, Kevin Phillips ..
Guest Bilo Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 All the more extraordinary that he only earned one cap when you consider how desperately short of left-wingers England were. Guppy's left foot was majestic, and if he'd played for Manchester United he'd have been a shoe-in.
RedHux Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Stanley Victor. Could have been one of the very best.
ADK Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Anyone who has missed out due to the obsession with picking players only from the "big" clubs. Crouch is the most recent example, his performances in an England shirt have been very good but since he plays for a lesser team he dosn't even make the squad.
Guest Bilo Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Stanley Victor. Could have been one of the very best. Unbelievable on his day, 12 years and I still don't know how he scored that goal for us against Sunderland. Just a shame he was a bit of a mess off the pitch.

Guest Basildon Fox Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 The amount of strikers we had around in the mid to late 90's was awesome. Players like Wright, Cole, Fowler and even Sir Les would walk into the England team now. With Shearer, Owen & Sheringham in there at the time though, they did not get much of a look in.
Zingari Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 Len Glover and Mike Stringfellow should have been given a shot . edit ; surely Sheringham can't be considered as a nearly man or not quite cutting it ?
Reynard Bleu Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 Le Tissier should have been our star man for years, the most naturally gifted player of his time in my opinion. Unfortunately, you had to build a team around hime to do all the donkey work, he was not a grafter, but his touch and his shooting were remarkable.
Captain... Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 You have to say Steve Bruce, probably the best player to never get a senior England cap (in my lifetime anyway). Currently I would say Defoe, He has an excellent record for England, but hardly gets a look in, with the way friendlies are treated now though, it looks like he has loads of caps, but he has missed out on so many tournaments, and even when he went to SA, he didn't much of a chance (IIRC). He must have had one of the most frustrating careers out of any current footballer, so close to being a great player for England and Spurs.
Corky Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 Just looked at the video...he got two belters that day! That header was sensational
Guest Bilo Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 David Nugent 100% scoring record for England. Prolific.
Fox in the North Posted 16 August 2012 Posted 16 August 2012 Ledley king isn't a nearly man but certainly had a lot more to achieve of it weren't for his knee/s
