Solar Panels

i've already taken one for the team and had solar panels , but they still don't like me .

I feel used :(

That's what happens, you take one on the chin and just get cast aside like an used condom

I started the thread on 'home efficiency' to do with securing the

Funding for cavity walls/loft insulation. We'll be doing the same with solar panels & exterior wall insulation soon too. See you soon :P

So...Zing took one from the team and also took one on the chin... then was thrown away like a used condom. I would never have expected this thread to go this way... ooohh wait :) im on FT arent i :)

Out of interest (probably not but nevertheless) The Oz government introduced a solar scheme 2 years ago, they basically cover 3/4 of the install costs and offered a $0.40 per kilowatt feedback payment... they dropped that $0.40 to $0.07 last year (although if you are contracted at the 40 you will continue to get it).

My system ended up costing $1600 (1000 poundsish) and got my a 1.5 kw system during summer that will be enough for the 2 of us to keep our bills close to $0. Keep in mind if you dont have anyone at home during the day.. you reduce your savings.

We decided it was worth it purely for the effect on the planet every little bit helps.

The similarities between me and a used condom don't end there .

It seems I've spent most of my life keeping some cvnt or other out of trouble :(

£500 a year sounds a bit generous, I'd heard it was around £70.

All depends upon the amount of energy they create. ie. For best results, the roof will be South facing with no foliage providing shade, therefore it will recieve sun pretty much all day. If they are on an East facing roof, they will only produce roughly half the amount of energy as they only recieve sun for half they day etc..

If you really are going to get that much energy from them then i think just installing them yourself might be a better option. That way you get to keep all the money.

I'd love to but you're looking at ten grand plus, and it takes a long time for them to pay for themselves. If I had that sort of money floating around I'd definitely think about it.

I've submitted an enquiry to A Shade Greener. Don't think our house roof is suitable but we've got a separate garage with a pitched roof that points in the right direction and I think that's probably big enough. I'll be interested to see

I've been rejected!

'Dear Bellend, due to the East/West orientation of your house roof, we have concluded that your property is not suitable and you should go and **** yourself'.

I made this up, naturally, they were actually very nice about it. I have asked about the garage roof so we'll see what they say about that. I almost hope they reject that as well so I don't have to bother thinking about whether it's all a good idea or not

I have no idea whether solar panels make economic sense. What I do know is that they seem to be popping up all over the place.

I assume that most of these are the free installations where you get the benefit of the electricity but are basically leasing out your roof for the next 25 years, and the installing company profits from the electricity they return to the National Grid. Since the government cut the subsidy earlier in the year buying them yourself is a lot less attractive, but being as I've seen quite a few around New Parks and places like that I imagine people are just signing up to cut their leccy bills rather than forking out thousands as an investment

From what i calculated they are a very good investment. The fact theres tons of comapnies wanting to give you free electricity in order to grab the reward from the subsidies suggests that.

Absolutely right mate.

You can see them when driving down New Parks Boulevard can't you. I imagine there must be some sort of subsidy for Council Tenants?

A lot of those houses on New Parks are now privately owned.

mostly still council though. only have to look at the steel houses to see the top council cladding (private still have the concrete tops or had it cladded themselves which can see id different to council) , and quite a few of them have the solar panels.

Since when did you become this man? :P

What I meant was I assume the Council gets them subsidised from the manufacturers which can then be passed onto the tenant.

Why would the council need subsidies it is free, you can't get much cheaper than that.

According to an advert on the bottom of the page;

http://www.ecovision...CFcQNfAodjiwA0w

A 4kW Solar Panel System From Ecovision is Just £5,999*

In Southern England this will return £24,688 over 20 Years**. The facts are:

  • £24,688 is 75% cash income and 25% electricity saving and calculated at the new feed in tariff rates from 1st August 2012

I make that £6147 of electricity over 20 years which is just over £300 per year based on Southern England, we'd probably get a little less.

Just stick to fossil fuels, and sit back and enjoy the global warming. Days like today are great!

Depends on what you see the greater problem as, running out of fossil fuels before we have been able to find suitable sustainable replacements, or the irreparable damage they are doing to our eco-system, still at least you managed to top up your tan.

Ironically the damage done to the ozone layer is actually making solar energy more viable.
