Newcastle Jets have placed an order for 5,000 more Emile Heskey shirts after their first batch sold out.

The Australian club, who completed the signing of the former England striker in time for the new A-League season, have also been boosted by 1,000 new fans signing up as members since Heskey's arrival.

The Jets coach, Gary van Egmond, told Foxsports that the high-profile signing was "fantastic … he ticks all the boxes, in a footballing sense with his ability and experience … and from a commercial and marketing point of view. He's going to be a great fit."

Van Egmond said he was hopeful that Heskey would arrive in Australia on Friday in match-fit condition.

"We are obviously all hoping he is going to be ready to go. From my understanding, he's been training at Wigan and has kept himself in really good nick. He's been ensuring that he prepared himself properly for whichever club he decided to play with. But until he gets here, we won't know for sure.

"Everyone's hopeful it's all OK and he's in decent shape but as I say, we can't do anymore at this stage except wait until we see him in the flesh and then go from there."

The club's Swiss defender Dominik Ritter also welcomed Heskey's imminent arrival.

"When I came here, I didn't know much about Australian football," he said. "Then a couple of weeks ago, Del Piero signed [with Sydney FC] and everyone from Switzerland, my family and friends, all texted me saying how great it was.

"Now Emile Heskey is coming to play with me and my team. It's very, very exciting."

It'd be nice if we had this excitement. I hope he tears up that league.

Bruno, Bruno!

P.S. if anyone is looking to buy a shirt, they're A$175 inc shipping which is roughly £112.

And we moan about the price, Jesus.

Pretty pissed off that a few Glory games in WA are going to be played at Subiaco Stadium and not NIB... Subiaco is simply the SH1TTEST place to watch "soccer", if you thought the places with running tracks were crap :(

That looks deadset horrible, are they playing everygame there? Similar when we play at Ethiad stadium we might get 35-40,000 there but the atmosphere at AAMI Park when there is only 20-22,000 is so much better as it's a purpose built football stadium. It's just annoying they have a contract to play 5 or 6 games a season at Ethihad.

Looking forward to our opening match which is the Melbourne Derby we have about 12 mates of us that all have our season ticket together in the Active South End which means we can stand all game with out security telling us to sit down all the time.

We are playing our first 2 home games there, while NIB is being upgraded (one stand being rebuilt, could still have fitted 10,000 which is the most we are likely to get anyway) so they shipped the games to Subi, also playing the Sydney FC game there "to cope with the expected Del Piero crowds". Load of shit, we still wont get more than 14,000 which NIB ( a real "Soccer" ground) can hold.

Subi is great for AFL, and not a bad atmosphere, although it tends to be 45,000 West Coast Eagles fans and 10 awayers. The (understandable) lack of away support in Aust is one of the worst parts of sport here :(

Yeah distances are 2 great but mind you i'm going to the Rugby on Sunday night and Melbourne are taking 7,000 fans. Victory take a sizeable number for most of the decent away games, Adelaide, Sydney and Brissy.

Heskey says he'll score for Jets

His international scoring record may not be flash but former England striker Emile Heskey says he'll hammer in goals for the Newcastle Jets in the A-League.

Despite a strike rate of one goal every 4.6 games in English football in his time with Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and Villa, the 34-year-old says he will be a force for his new club the Jets.

"Yeah definitely ," Heskey told Fox Sports on Wednesday.

"Everyone always says 'you didn't get enough goals, you didn't get enough goals'.

"But I'll get my fair share of goals plus I will help produce a lot of goals, that is one of the main things that I do.

"But I will get my fair share of goals given the opportunity."

Adelaide were my best bet of week, Newcastle and wanders will be at the bottom. Even with Heskey Jets will be battlers they were crap last year and lost their best 2 players in Brockie and Topor stanley.

Decent crowd in Melbourne I see....and a good match

I went to the Wanderers game. Thought they looked alright. Aaron Mooy in midfield looks really good. Shame they're stuck with Mark Bridge up front though

Emile Heskey – target-man for the wrong reasons

Under-appreciated forward heads down under

icon_hesk1.jpg7 October ~ Now that Emile Heskey is playing in Australia having failed to find a suitable offer closer to home, the time is right to reassess what became of him. The forlorn figure who blundered along at Villa Park bore such little resemblance to the explosive talent capable of barrelling through defences in his Leicester days. Despite an impressive record of 117 Premier League goals, 62 England caps and appearances in two World Cups, there won't be many mourning Heskey’s departure. His release from Aston Villa at the end of last season was hardly a surprise.

Twenty-nine appearances, many as a substitute, and in midfield rather than attack, yielded a solitary goal. Such fallow strike records have been the bane of Heskey’s life, his contribution to general play continually overlooked in favour of the headline statistic.

Throughout his career Heskey has worked selflessly to get the best out of others, Michael Owen most memorably, then Wayne Rooney in his England renaissance. The most instructive example of Heskey’s evolution can be seen in Martin O’Neill’s use of him as an attacking focal point at Leicester, before he became a foil for Gabriel Agbonlahor when they were reunited at Villa. While never an especially composed finisher, his profligacy became more pronounced as the years wore on and he was forced to play further from goal.

Any mention of Heskey now seems to lead inevitably to laughter at his expense. The unwitting victim of a football culture which can condense an entire career into a single moment of unrepresentative incompetence, it somehow seems entirely appropriate that when you type in his name on Google one of the search terms it offers up is “Emile Heskey jokes”. Although hardly in the same league as Ronnie Rosenthal, who we instinctively associate with his crossbar clanger, Heskey’s attempted step-over against Algeria endures in perpetuity. He performed the move seemingly in slow motion, falling over his own feet before shanking the ball high into the stands.

His selection in the England squad for the 2010 World Cup was a source of constant mirth and ill-considered opinion. A diverse range of managers, at domestic and international level, including O’Neill, Gérard Houllier, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Steve Bruce and Fabio Capello have appreciated his efforts, but football fans in general failed to take Heskey to their hearts. He seems to serve as a painful reminder of our misplaced faith in the merits of the big man. The irony is that Heskey didn’t start out this way – he was a veritable powerhouse who didn’t play with his back to goal. That his style changed over time was England’s loss as well as his own.

At least he is, in the main, fondly thought of by fans of the clubs he played for. There was the season where he broke the 20-goal barrier at Liverpool, a hat-trick against Derby that included a thumping 30-yarder, the excellent run and clipped finish against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Super Cup final (a throwback to his former abilities). There was also the time that he helped keep Wigan up on the final day of the season by putting in a dominant display at centre-back.

After representing five clubs with varying degrees of success in 516 top-flight appearances, Heskey should be something of a Premier League icon. Instead he is our target man in an entirely different sense. Even when his greatest moment in an England shirt was immortalised in song, it was with a cruel twist: “5-1 and even Heskey scored”. Retreating to Australia at the age of 34 has at least given him the chance for a final flourish away from the boo-boys. Sean Cole

Was a decent crowd 42,000 and a pretty high standard match, our slow central defenders got found out again with 2 goals on the break and poor passing out of defence. Lot to like tho so not all doom and gloom except a road trip to Brisbane this Saturday.

Heard Mooy was the one to watch apparently been a star in the trial games, was with Bolton Wanders in their accademy for a few years.

Didn't know that about Mooy. Bolton could do with him now by the looks of it.

Sydney v Newcastle is heading for a 30,000+ crowd which is fantastic news for the A league. Really looking forward to it...haven't seen Heskey play live since a match against Villa in '99 where he tore them to shreds

It's Heskey mania over here. There's even a pic in the paper from our 4-0 win over Derby, as a "top three Heskey moment"

http://www.dailytele...d-1226493951743

"Even footballers don't forget their own heroes and inspirations, and Heskey can still remember the inspiration he took as he went through the youth system at Leicester City.

"As a kid from the city, and coming through the ranks, it had to be Steve Walsh," he said. "Walshie was the biggest name in Leicester, a legend who epitomised the fighting spirit of the fans and players.

"Growing up, someone like that was a big influence. Obviously I've not been here very long but I hope I could offer something similar.

"Having had the privilege as a young lad of playing on the same pitch and sharing the same dressing room as these guys who were heroes of mine, I know what it means."

Heskey laughs at the description of his ex-Leicester teammate Zeljko Kalac that he "was only 17 and still a beast".

"It's true," he said. "I think that's why I got the nickname Bruno (after the boxer, Frank Bruno). I was as big then as now. My wife saw a photo of me at that age and she couldn't believe how little I'd changed."

Good to see the game getting on the main pages of the paper, Sydney should win this as i really don't rate Newcastle they have very little and won't give Heskey any service.

Sydney just signed up Culina as well. Good player if he stays fit.

He'll probably hear a lot worse over here :D

Thought the big man did alright. He held the ball up, took his goal well and got a good ovation from the Newcastle fans when he went off. They should have won by more really... could have had five or six.

Del piero looks a class act. Very calm on the ball. Seems to make space for himself with hardly any effort

Heskey just scored not long after Del Pierro scored in the same match

Victory are getting a pasting at Brisbane. Looks like our teams will be propping up the A league tonight....
