Netting the fans in!

Before you start discussing netting the fans in, consider taking the following few easy steps:

- Ban the use of cash in the turnstiles. Hand out prepaid cards that can be used for purchasing food and beverages. Minimizes the risk of numbskulls throwing coins at players or other fans.

Also minimizes the waiting period whilst queuing in your line because the guy in front of you or the guy standing right at the till no longer takes ages to seek the right small change, which usually adds to general frustration.

- Install a proper two-step or at least three-step control system for fans to pass through before reaching the inside of the stadium, perhaps by using metal detectors. Minimizes the risk of numbskulls smuggling flares, weapons or other harmful objects into the ground.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you're joking.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here and trying to see things from another perspective.

Things could just work out the way I described it in the near future - take the current developments in the Bundesliga for example.

The discussion surrounding safety at football matches is reaching 1984-esque proportions.

Following the incident with Rio Ferdinand being hit by a coin this weekend, some people are calling for netting to be erected behind the goal and corner flag areas.

Good idea or not, what's your opinion?

Personally I do not like the idea and think it's a big mistake to even consider it.

Correct me if I'm wrong you old un's out there, but did we not have one at Filbert Street at some point?

All be it between the opposing fans.

Some people have even suggested let's not forget Hillsboro' if a net is in place where can fans escape to if the need arises.

Unfortunately, I can see this happening. It appears that whilst we have a really good chance of achieving safe standing, that some hooligans and people who can't control their emotions are going to ruin the game. Really don't think this is the answer however, there has to be a change in the modern "fan" - and certain oiks need to learn NOT to throw stuff at the players/opposing fans.

I hope not, they just need to ban people that do it. For ages now people have been chucking shit onto the pitch and nothings been done, be it coins, lighters, bottles. Like when Man City fans threw coins at Beckham years ago - he laughed it off and picked them up in a jokey way, so not much was made out of it. If it had hit him the head the media would have been all over it, blowing it out of proportion.

If they'd just clamped down on people that threw things and missed in the past, then fans would know they'd get banned if they threw something - meaning a lot less would do it - of course you're always going to have one clown that never learns.

I hope nets don't become the norm.

We live in a world where one or two cvnts can wreck everything for everyone else.

I don't think this will be any exception, especially if such incidents happen again soon.

The Health and Safety Brigade will be drawing up plans as we speak and football will be controlled still further. It's incidents such as these that could wreck the chances of safe standing developing.

Really hope this doesn't happen, however knowing the idiots that are in charge of the game it wouldn't surprise me. Its again a case of one or two utter plebs ruining it for everyone. Surely the simple answer would be ban all the cocks that do these things? Health and safety is stupid now, but having things thrown at players is unacceptable and the morons that do it have to question the value of their life.

CCTV is plenty enough. They've already arrested the thrower haven't they?

I think they want to prevent it happening in the first place rather than just catching the people that do it. I don't think it necessary to have netting though

Saw this pish comin months ago, mentioned so on here somewhere

Netting us all in is not the way forward, they perhaps could use all the current publicity to get a campaign to get anyone seen doing it by other fans turned over to the authorities.

This behavior is clearly crossing a line
