Look at what he has achieved at Man United? He's been at Manchester United for 9 years and he is only 27! Averages better than a goal a game for United in the League. Won everything he can in Club Football. Looks set to break every England record there is available. To say he is overrated is ridiculous.

Depends how you rate him, if you rate him above Messi of course you are overrating him.

Of course I'm not putting him ahead of Messi, that would be silly. I'm pointing out that he hasn't been poor for England as many are saying, the world's best hasn't produced Club form for Country. So why should Rooney be based on International form?

Quick question, have Ronaldo or Messi ever produced at a major tournament vs one of the better Countries in a tournament? The answer is no. Another question, do people change their opinions on Ronaldo and Messi because of their International form? The answer again is no.

Good player, but overrated. Shocking for England most of the time, and I wouldn't put him in the current top 20 players.

Whoever says he plays well for England regularly, clearly does not watch them often. He's been shite for England in tournaments since vs. Portugal in 2006. England as a team tend to play better without Rooney. Messi and Ronaldo might not stand out as much at International level, but they don't make the team worse like Rooney has been doing.

Wow behave! No doubting Fergie is a domestic genius and one of the finest managers to grace this country but best of all time?! If he was that they would have more than two European Cups from the last 25 years with the talent they have had. Paisley won three in half the time.

If Mourinho carries on at the rate he is he'll have 25 league titles and 8 Champions Leagues by the time he is Alex's age.

It's his longevity and his ability to recycle teams that clinches it for me - so I will not, indeed 'behave,' though I can see why you'd rate Paisley ahead of him, perhaps.

Is it Rooney's fault who England draw in World Cup groups or qualification? The only top teams we have played at a major tournament have been Portugal, Germany and Italy. Portugal he got injured and sent off.

2004 he got injured v Portugal, after he had been our best player going into that 1/4 Final. 2006 World Cup he was never fit. 2008 England didn't qualify and Rooney played 5 of the qualifiers and scored 2, wasn't great. 2010 World Cup he didn't score, England just made it out the group and lost to Germany 4-1 BUT in the qualifying Rooney was England's top scorer and was brilliant scoring 9 goals in 9 games.

BUT I don't see why you have based your whole argument on Rooney solely on International Football? Rooney has a better goal to game ratio than Ronaldo and Messi at International Level? And Rooney has played more games than Messi.

Some people really do need to do a bit of research before coming out with drivel.

You must watch different games to me. His passing and all round play apart from shooting is dreadful

Whilst I'm not sure he's neccesarily overrated (even though I voted that) I think that he hasn't filled the potential that he showed. Don't get me wrong he's still a very good, if not world class, player - probably in that bracket just below the likes of Messi, Ronaldo etc. But when he broke through he looked like he would be England's best player for a long, long time and the fact that he went to Manchester United for so much is testament to that.

If someone were to buy him now I'm not sure Manchester United would see much, if any, profit on what they paid and he's not really performed for England anything above the likes of Lampard and Gerrard. Shame really because I think he could have been in that Messi and Ronaldo bracket (not quite as good as them but talked about in the same breath). I don't know what prevented that happening.

As others have said he's a very good player but he's not one of the great players.

Overhyped is a more accurate description.

His last international tournament goal was against Croatia in 2004. In fact all his tournament goals came in two matches in 2004.

L'Equipe did a report which showed he has scored the highest % of knockout goals in the champions league, some 52% of his goals are scored at the knockout stage. However if you look at the stats you might notice a slight flaw in that argument

6. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 30 goals (4 knockout) = 13%

5. Robin van Persie - 21 goals (5 knockout) = 24%

4. Didier Drogba - 39 goals (13 knockout) = 33%

3. Cristiano Ronaldo - 44 goals (20 knockout) = 45%

2. Lionel Messi - 56 goals (26 knockout) = 46%

1. Wayne Rooney - 27 goals (14 knockout) = 52%

And apart from that tap in, he was shite for the entire game.

Oh right yeah. We'll cancel that winning goal then, clearly doesn't count if you say he wasn't very good for the rest of the game.

Yeah, because that's exactly what I was saying, that the goal doesn't count  He was dire, absolutely dreadful in that game. One easy tap caused by poor keeping that any player could have scored (To quote the commentators exact words "Wayne Rooney will not score a simpler goal in his entire national career" - hell, I could have put that away) doesn't excuse him for a shocking performance, looking really unfit and missing what should have been an easy headed chance early on in the game.

He had a shit tournament, and If we'd been playing someone else up front, we might have played better in that game and in the game Vs. Italy (we played better without him in the tournament.). But yeah, because he got a crappy goal that my nan could have scored in that one game in the tournament, and looked absolutely shite for the entire thing, he's a world class player, good logic.

lol okay.

All I said was he scored in Euro 2012. Did he score in Euro 2012? Yes he did.

I think the problem is that he looks like he has stalled, or even declined in the past 2 years. Perhaps due to injurys, I'm not sure.

Wasting him in AMC. If they'd worked on making him an out and out centre forward he'd be up there with the best for me.

Very good player but wasted.

I think it's you who doesn't watch Football, his passing is incredible and so's his vision. Go to Youtube and watch United v Cluj away from the Champions League this season for Van Persie. Then comeback on here and tell me his passing and all round play is terrible..

You may not like Wayne Rooney and I don't either really but please don't come on here and try and slate a player who is clearly class and is without a doubt England's best player.

Not won the FA cup has he?

Sorry, he will win it this season though.

I think you could be right. I'd say his shooting/finishing is his strongest attribute, rather than his all round play./

I partially agree. You're right in that he has good vision, and on form his long passing is only really surpassed by the likes of Scholes. However his short passing and first touch/control can be terrible!

I'd also disagree about him being Englands best player (if we're going on performances for England anyway). Gerrard and Ashley Cole have been the two outstanding performers for England in the past 4 years - certainly Gerrard, who was our best player both in the last Euros and in the last World Cup.
