  1. 1. Is Wayne Rooney Incredibly Over-rated or Does he go about his business quietly

Was having a chat with my mate tonight whilst watching the champions league tie, I asked the question of how much Rooney is worth now compared to his purchase price of £30million.

We both agreed he has progressively declined every season since signing for united but I wanted to get some opinions on why this is and what exactly has gone wrong.

My opinion was that he never got the chance to be the striker he could of been and was instead moulded into a hard working number 10 who some games appears to be completely AWOL and others puts in a decent shift.... the problem is I haven't said WOW at anything he has done since he was at Everton.

I realise that some of you may think me and my mate are talking crap so I have added a poll and am looking forward to some of the opinions.

The tag I've seen him given as much as any is "England's only world class player", personally think that's laughable so yes, over-rated for me.

Very good player but always seems to missing when needed most, and that is his major flaw.

I think he's been coached wrong personally and we've wasted him. He was far better as the kind of forward who got the ball, ran past a few and scored, we've almost tried converting him into an attacking midfielder, personally think he's wasted.

Rooney is class. He does so much work all over the pitch and could genuinely play in any position. His role has changed in recent seasons but he does what is asked of him and makes an invaluable all round contribution to the best team in the country.

There are players in that United team who are vastly overrated though. For me Valencia is the one who's ability and all round game is most often and grossly overestimated.

Each and everyone of you who has said he is overrated should have Football taken away from you, as you clearly know nothing and are basing him on a game where he played out of position against the 2nd best team in the World.

Absolute morons.

And for the idiot who said 'since he's been to United I've not said WOW' then God knows what makes you say 'WOW'? Jesus Christ, it's idiots like you who made me leave before.

Yes because I based what I said on one fvcking game?

I've said it for ages. He's very good at demolishing the weaker sides but at the absolute top level and in the biggest games, especially for England, that's where he seems to go missing, and I think to be "world class" (something he's very often referred as) you need to turn up in these games regularly like Messi/Ronaldo/Pirlo.

Very good player? Yes. Over-rated? Yes, again.

Hardly overrated, if he is asked to score goals he does it, if he is asked to provide goals in does it. Basically he is one of those players you can throw into any position, he is a genius, I don't think I have seen a more unselfish player.

This.

hes a very good player, but we use him wrong. He gets forced out wide or an attacking midfielder when tbh hes an out and out striker. Remember one season when he scored significantly more? After Ronaldo no coicidence!

His finishing is top bracket and hes scored all types of goals, Right foot, Left foot, Headers and rockets from outside area. I wouldnt say Over rated because people actually talked more about Van Persie/Tevez/Ronaldo etc. Hes 1 of Englands 2 World Class players - The other being Steven Gerrard.

This post I disagree with less. He scores a ton in big premier league games. I can think of lots of goals Vs Chelsea, Arsenal(where I think he has a record of some sort) and even Man City with 2 Vital goals this season as well as a pretty decent goal a few seasons ago(wasnt it voted the best goal in premier league history?).

In fact in terms of his Man Utd form I think hes very underrated. For England he hasnt produced his best and his comment vs Algeria infuriated me "Nice to hear english fans booing" however 33 goals in 79 caps is not too shabby either!

Overall to sum it up, Rooney is a pretty outstanding player, although I cant agree more that he isnt used properly. He isnt used like "the main man" role..hes always a number 2 to Van Persie or Ronaldo or whoever else the media brown nose's.

Majority of players actually dont perform when not in the spot light, however Rooney keeps going with 10+ goals in every season at Man Utd Including 2 with 26 & 27 goals, which is rather impressive.

Stats dont lie and his stats stand up to almost anyone. I think the fact people seem to think hes "over rated"or "not as good as before" is because the way he used to run and rip a new a** to any defender he came up against(Remember Vs Turkey in 2004?) Also the entire euro 2004...however his longetivity is still class.

Showed he can do it at the top level, sometimes. Would like to see him as an out and out striker though, he's wasted with this 'attacking midfielder' role he's given nowadays.

Definately has improved over the years, and is a very good player. But wouldnt put him in the top 5 forwards in the world, not even the top forward for Utd.

Good player not great. Not even comparable to what RVP does now for Man U, you can see the difference in them from this season to last.

Certainly not World Class, laughable to have in the sentence as Messi/Ronaldo/Iniesta etc.

Some people have been watching far too much Sky Sports News.

Wouldn't mind being over rated if it meant winning the premier league, champions league and scoring over 30 goals for England whilst earning multi millions of pounds a year.

Personally think he's class, wouldn't look out of place at centre back. He doesn't do it against the big teams? He regularly scores against them all, and there's much more to his game than goals.

Posted

Over-hyped? Severely.

Over-rated? What does that even mean? Track record for United speaks for itself.

Scores goals, makes goals, always capable of making something out of nothing. RVP may be a better finisher and Aguero may have the more unbelievabler tekkers but Rooney brings a versatility that the nation's greatest manager clearly values.

So he doesn't "do it" for England, so what? Chalk it down to guilt because he knows he's ****ing Irish.

At club level he's quality. And he's been the difference in plenty of "Big games" over the last 10 years.

At International level for whatever reason he seems to be have been utter dog mess for a long time.

So he doesn't "do it" for England, so what?

So none of us are man utd fans so his form for England is all that matters. Sometimes I wish I had the luxury of supporting a tinpot country who never have a hope of achieving as much as mediocrity so then I could just accept perennial failure without it bothering me.

How did Finners manage to vote for both on this poll?

Certainly a very good player, who could play in any position. I've always thought that there are players better than him, but he is always seen as the '3rd best player behind Messi and Ronaldo' due to the media probably. Don't think he should be called the player that England always rely on either, but again that's the media. On the football pitch though, he gives 100% every game, which as a football fan, I want to see.

lol oops!

Anyway.. like I said it was an open question, just wanted opinions,i wont slag anyone off for theirs so I dont see why i'm being slagged off for mine :S

As for UA I was hoping I was enough of an idiot to keep you away ;)
