LCFCCHRIS Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 Anyone else into skateboarding or has tried it ? Any tips for a beginner ?
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 I skated for 2 weeks when I was 14, had a horrendous bail and broke my wrist in 2 places - my right forearm looked like a Tetris piece. 12 years on and I'm still terrified of anything remotely extreme sports. (Still tend to dress kinda skatey, can't top a decent pair of skate shoes for comfort) Tips: wrists guards. I wish I had. A tip a much more advanced friend gave me was practice your ollies and flip-tricks on grass over and over before you try on concrete. Before I broke my wrist I successfully did a few kickflips and whatnot. Then I got cocky and tried a 5-0 grind at sprinting pace on a very poor set of trucks. The board shot out from under me and as I went flying through the air I stupidly put my arm out under me to cushion the fall. In cast for 8 weeks and was warned another break in that bone would mean I needed a pin implanting
FoxesAreBlue Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 A bit old for it now but when I see people doing all the tricks and stuff I can't help it admire. How the hell they do it I'll never know.

marko Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 Agreed. I love watching all that X Games stuff. You'll probably like this then - http://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/david-gonzalez-possessed-to-skate/ It's one of the best sections I've ever seen. He does some massive rails!
Guest BlueBrett Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 Like baker said, just stick with it. Definitely worth it. Keep watching video parts and checking out the new content on websites like the berrics etc to stay passionate and maintain your motivation. Also really helps if you can get your mates into skating. Not only is it more fun that way but you will push each other to progress quicker and try things you probably wouldn't dare to do otherwise through a bit of friendly competition
cambridgefox Posted 5 May 2013 Posted 5 May 2013 My cousin is much younger than me and he was shit hot at boarding.until........... He jumped on the top of some side rails near some steps, fell and snapped his arm in 2 places. He got his arm caught in the rails on the way down.Numerous operations and metal plates later he decided he wasn't as good as he thought!
LCFCCHRIS Posted 8 May 2013 Author Posted 8 May 2013 Thanks for the tips ! Ive been using a low range board that I got a while ago, it was from somwhere like argos and was about £20, its not the best, grip tapes all fell off, bearings need re lubrocating alot and the trucks come loose on their own , good for learning the basics on though. I've been looking online to see the prices of decent ones, theres some good looking complete boards on skatehut.co.uk, but theres hardly any reviews about them online, anyone know of a reliable decent board I could get for around £30-£70 onlin or any decent pricd boards at any skate shops in leicestershire?

Build it from scratch. The complete decks may be slightly cheaper but they wont be as good.

General Smuts Posted 8 May 2013 Posted 8 May 2013 Skated for years when I was a youngster and as people have said - skate with a group of you - you'll get better quicker with competition. And don't bottle it. If you get hurt - get up and try again. But also know you're limits. I tried to ollie a 12 set and put a hole in my Vans. Tried again a tore a load of skin off my foot. That stung and the walk home was a bitch. Arse first onto a metal barrier was a stinger as well. Pretty sure I lost my anal virginity that day.
leicesterlad1989 Posted 8 May 2013 Posted 8 May 2013 Used to be abit of a Skater when I was younger. But "I had all the gear but no idea." Possibly a bit harsh on myself but my parents did spend a fortune on me to build up my own boards and I really wasn't as good as the Skateboard suggested. I did have a lot of good times in the summer tho..ahhh when we had real summer eh?! I do remember persistance being key and due to me having a very short fuse it really wasn't for me. I did show my ex-girlfriends brother a few tricks a few years back, but my balance has well and truely gone! Worst injury - when the board flicked up and cracked me right in the nuts. PAINFUL!
