Fox92 Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Doubt you can actually do that without a couple of other players/people. If you're looking to learn it from the best, I guess watch videos of players like Makelele, Vieira, Keane, Matthaus etc.
AKCJ Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Within the first few minutes of a game you'll find the other team's most effective player. Stick to him and don't give him any space. When your team has the ball make yourself available and always try to stay a couple of steps ahead of the game. Try to figure out what you're going to do with the ball before you play it noting the space you've got to work with. If you've got the ball either try to pass to your more technically gifted players (i'll assume these are your wingers/strikers) or if there is no pass to play then it's your role to drive the team forward. Watch Yaya Toure. He's probably the greatest defensive midfielder in the world. Edit; Just realised you've asked how to do it alone. Simple matter of fact, you can't.
WhenYourSmilingLCFC Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 You havent got to be lightening quick. do quick sprints though. Practice your touch, smash the ball into the air and try controlling with your knee foot chest etc. I played just infront of the back 4 for about 5 years when I was younger cos I was slow as fuxk but could pick out a pass from nothing. Just drift from left channel to right depending on where the balls coming from and hold a line about 10 yards infront of the CB's. Would love to get back playing again. Good luck trying on your own though aha no idea how.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 You need to make sure that the play is always in front of you, if you're chasing back towards your own goal and balls are going over your head all the time, you're not playing deep enough.
Haydos Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Watch videos of the best. Practice your first touch and getting your head up whilst controlling the ball. Pretty sure you can't do much more than that by yourself.
EdinburghFox Posted 14 May 2013 Author Posted 14 May 2013 Find 10 mates to play the other postitions? Watch Neil Danns and do the opposite? Download it to your hard drive? All useless answers to an unanswerable question thanks for the help (although the bit about Danns made me chuckle)
Lamby Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Walk into the middle of a field and hold onto the grass for however long you can

Thanks coach, I'll try to remember that! (You are absolutely spot on though - as usual)
Soar Fox Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Easiest position in football to play. Win it pass it, you don't have to run around like headless chicken, stay 10 yards in front of your defence. If you want to watch how to do a man marking job watch a video of leicester v boro in the 97 coca cola cup final Pontus Kaamark marking Juhnino. It was a defensive masterclass from him.
EdinburghFox Posted 14 May 2013 Author Posted 14 May 2013 Walk into the middle of a field and hold onto the grass for however long you can I see what you did there
Fox in the North Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 I'm playing in the football aid game and I'm down as right back, haven't played in a while so also like the OP, any tips apart from don't get skinned/nutmegged?
RedHux Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Suss out your immediate opponents weak spots. No right/left foot, too much pace not enough control etc and just don't let him past you. Hoy him over if needs be (try to keep this to a minimum) and don't give the ball away. That's pretty much all a full back needs to do. Unless you fancy charging forward in which case go crazy

Stand off your opponent, angle your body so he is pushed wide, keep on your toes so when he tries to go past, you are ready...and keep your legs shut (A quick kidney punch in the first tackle will also have him thinking)

I play left-back or CM, all I'd say is get tight without getting turned and let him know you're there. If you're any good with the ball then try and recycle play, look for it lots and get down the wing if you've got the legs
