Jaspa Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 David Luiz does that type of thing from the back all the time and it does make sense if the opposition are pressing well and high to just loft onto a possibly weaker back-line, you just need to realise when it isnt going to work and shake it up abit more We are a long way behind other nations but its no reason to be any less of a fan
Dan Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Unless you've got a world class distributor of the ball (which we don't) then it's a waste of time. Told everyone when we built St Georges Park that the facility alone won't produce any success - it's the people in it. You'd like to hope for a new facility like that, that we'll start thinking of fresh ideas but we just don't - we continue to get the absolute footballing basics hideously wrong and that is why we continue to fail at national level and will continue to do so for as long as I can think of.
Guest MattP Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 If in trouble......HOOF! Imagine telling that to Victor Valdes. Sickening.
Dan Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 If in trouble......HOOF! Imagine telling that to Victor Valdes. Sickening. I bet all these Spaniards who come over here must think the managers are joking at times Mind you the majority of them are signing for Swansea & Liverpool, two very decent footballing sides.
Fox92 Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 "If God had wanted football to be played in the air, he would have put grass in the sky" is one of my favourite Brian Clough quotes. You can't justify the long ball tactic, football is supposed to be played on the floor.
ScouseFox Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Well we're stuck in a vicious circle aren't we, really. We haven't got good enough players to be backheeling it around the defence like Spain or Brazil so we obviously have to go long if we're being pressed. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together would agree with that. It's either give it them in their half or give it them in our penalty area. We need to start from the very, very bottom and rebuild. And this "tactic" should still be used if a defender is in trouble. Swansea played United in their first season in the PL and lost 1-0 because Angel Rangel had been told by Rodgers to basically never go long, he pissed about at the back and played a through ball straight to a United player who obviously scored. If he'd hit their centre back with a long ball they wouldn't have conceded and may have got a result. Players need to know it's not against the law to just get rid at times. All this is saying is if you're about to get tackled fúcking twat it, don't just get tackled. Makes perfect sense to me.

Wow. Id say we are behind a lot of footballing nations due to us trying to play a style that doesnt suit us imo, english football should be about the scrappy and the big man, look at the danger Caroll caused in Euro 2012, we need to realise we are not Spain and cannot play tip tap bollocks sooner rather then later.

Hallelujah. Punt it to the big man. Let's see Mascherano or someone beat big Andy in the air. Don't think so brother.

Agree with the first part. Second I'm not sure, Rangel might have cost them a goal not doing that once but how many goals over the season have they scored from him doing that, retaining position and moving forward up the pitch. I'd bet it earnt them more points than they lost.
Ashley Posted 4 July 2013 Author Posted 4 July 2013 The thing is. Academies up and down the country teach this a hell of a lot at younger ages. We will never achieve anything like this. Has anyone got the stats to the amount of qualified coaches in England, Germany & Spain?
Danno Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 I was at the team I coach's football tournament at the weekend, watched a few teams and I won't say the name but whenever one team got the ball they never controlled it, just hoofed it up the field first time. This was even encouraged by the coach. What a load of shit

What a load of shit I walked across Ellis Park a couple of years ago and heard a bald headed pygmy who was managing no older than Under 12's shout "Get the ball and get it up there". Every single manager of a youth side in this country should have taken a coaching course.

Doesn't matter if you lose the game as long as you learn and progress.

Joe Hart is actually quite a decent kicker in all fairness.
Guy1960 Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 England are the Stoke of the football world.....very depressing
Dan Posted 5 July 2013 Posted 5 July 2013 England aren't focused on technical ability at all. It's all about physical players and it's terrible, the amount of times you hear top pundits, coaches etc... when discussing the Premier League, what's the first thing you hear every single time? "He's built well enough". It's the root of our problems and until everyone opens their eyes and realises you don't have to be built like a shithouse to play football, then we can actually focus on producing a decent side. Because at the minute we're a laughing stock and I can honestly see the likes of even Poland & Ukraine being better than us in 5 years time - I mean they play with more enthusiasm already. POLAND & UKRAINE.
Tevez Posted 5 July 2013 Posted 5 July 2013 We are not Spain. We are not Germany. It's natural from Grass Roots and Professional in England that we do play long ball. Only people anti football dinosaurs like Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis only exploit this on a regular basis. If people think we are going to develop the "tika taka" english version then you will be waiting a long long time. We have learnt to clear of any danger by releasing the ball 30 yards up the pitch and I don't really see a problem with that as to passing it to a defender who has a man on and potentially conceding. I think for us to be successful then we need to play our best Under 21 players (Jones, Wilshere, Ox in major Under 21 tournaments and so on) I think it will improve over time but rome wasn't built in a day!!
Swalker Posted 6 July 2013 Posted 6 July 2013 Playing to our strengths nothing wrong with that. What fustrates me is Spain play short passing football well and suddenly england try and copy it. We're not good at that but direct football is where we have the advantage against teams like Spain. There's nothing wrong with playing long ball it's a style of football as much as Spain's style is
MPH Posted 6 July 2013 Posted 6 July 2013 To be fair, that does say a long accurate pass, which is different to the HOOF ball we have seen from of our defenders.....
Ashley Posted 6 July 2013 Author Posted 6 July 2013 To be fair, that does say a long accurate pass, which is different to the HOOF ball we have seen from of our defenders..... That's why I said how to justify the long ball....
MPH Posted 6 July 2013 Posted 6 July 2013 That's why I said how to justify the long ball.... yup... I was responding more so to those referencing 'hoof ball' in this thread than I was you. but to me long ball football was more the Cambridge united team of old that we played in the play off those years ago.... a long accurate pass is different than playing ' long ball football' IMO
