Harry - LCFC Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 People saying tactics aren't important is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard on Foxestalk ever. It's not that it isn't important it's that it's importance is so exaggerated. Players matter more than what formation we play, the biggest question isn't whether Pearson will go for 3-5-2 it's do we have a good enough squad. Some people are seem to be suggesting that we literally can't get promoted if 'Pearson sticks with his dull/backwards/out of date/just want a reason to moan, formation.'

It does make me laugh when people criticise Pearson about tactics, he has tried 4+ formations in the past year, certainly not stubborn.
Guest Col city fan Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 If tactics aren't important, or particularly important, like some are saying then what's the point of having someone manage a team. Good man management skills are, of course, essential. But so is having the tactical ability to deploy your players to the best of their ability, being able to change tactics to change the course of a game and by so doing, imposing your game on others or stifling the opposition. A case in point would be Pearson playing Harry Kane out wide in a few games last season. That IS about tactics and we all saw how Kane looked like the proverbial fish out of water. Player ability, work rate AND tactics all go to making a good footballing side and they aren't mutually exclusive.
TrentFox Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 People saying tactics aren't important is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard on Foxestalk ever. You're kidding ? It is ridiculous, but it probably doesn't make the top one thousand ridiculous things - it's competing with some serious stuff!!!!!
foxfanazer Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Tactics are really important, of course they are. Having the personel to execute the tactics are just as important though. NP can switch to whatever formation he likes but if the players can't adapt to it he will always revert back to a rigid 442. He needs to get the players trusting in his tactics and being a bit more expressive. Knockaert is a prime example of a player that needs to be let of the reigns a bit
TrentFox Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Don't honestly believe a 3-5-2 will happen. On account of it not being a 4-4-2 ..... but if it did ....... for me it takes away the need that many have articulated for a 'thug' in the middle. The sheer increase of bodies in there, via the wing-backs, makes it more important that they can pass and keep possession than hurl themselves into tackles.
FoxesBoyChris Posted 22 July 2013 Author Posted 22 July 2013 He scored against us, but was he 'excellent'? Half of the Watford fans don't seem to rate him that much. He is a perfect CDM. Strong and has technical ability. He would be a great addition. Next Yaya Toure for me.
fleckneymike Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 You can line up how ever the **** you want, it's how you choose to play which is important.
Legend_in_blue Posted 22 July 2013 Posted 22 July 2013 Granted Pearson may have tried different systems last season but the only one which the players seemed happiest with was 442. What Pearson needs to do is stick with an alternative for away games and make sure that individuals within the team know what they have to do and how their roles effect the teams approach to the system. Last season it was so obvious they didn't have a clue how to play alternatives. We need an extra player in midfield to deal with certain teams away from home. We are too lightweight with just two CMs. It will cost us against the weak teams who play non-football. You can be absolutely sure though he will stick with 442 for all the home games, even if it means putting strikers on the wings.
tomtom Posted 23 July 2013 Posted 23 July 2013 If we played 3-5-2 and went a few games without winning people on here would be screaming for him to go back to 4-4-2 It's all very well saying he needs to have the courage to stick to it if it's not working but when Paulo Sousa tried a new "modern" formation got us playing some good football (albeit defending badly) people just wanted results I for one would actually like to see how we fair under a 3-5-2 system but if the wing backs can't get forward properly and are pinned back by a clever winger it can be really hard to create anything
FoxesBoyChris Posted 24 July 2013 Author Posted 24 July 2013 If the wing backs get pinned back then it is up to the CAM's (Knockaert would be best in my eyes) to drift to either wing and then start the play from there. Players just have to be smart and be able to help their team mates out.
FoxesBoyChris Posted 24 July 2013 Author Posted 24 July 2013 / Wood Nugent / / Knockaert / / Bakayogo James King De Laet / / Konch Morgan Moore / / Schmeichel Or: / Wood Nugent / / Bakayogo Knockaert King De Laet / / James (or Chalobah loan) / / Konch Morgan Moore / / Schmeichel

Undoubtedly. But I fear NP may lose his own resolve if that scenario were to occur. I think the formation for tonight and Monaco will be interesting. As we seem not to have tried 4-4-2 yet, surely that will be the acid test of his thinking ahead of Boro' ?
Haydos Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Formations & tactics are overrated Pearson played quite a few last season, under 442 we played some of the best football I've ever seen us play. We then changed to 433 in an effort to reverse our form, 451 too, we played 4411 to great effect Vs Watford in home leg too. Pearson tactically knows his stuff... Helping players handle pressure etc... Obviously a development area for him IMO Anyone who bleats on about formations & tactics as a primary way to win games knows **** all about managing & even less about actual real football away from fake world of Football Manager & boring people to death in a pub It's about effort, motivation, tempo, player ability & confidence first & foremost. Without hardwork you get **** all, modern game is about tempo too, which we had in buckets in 442 on our rise to the top of the table. 442 is soooo baaaad Brazil ripped Spain a new one playing it. NP is obviously having a look at 352 & we've played 4411, 433, 451 & of course 442 last season. I'm sure we'll play what will serve us best, but I'm far more interested in player's effort, passing tempo & other stuff than formation alone Formations are overrated, tactics aren't.
TrentFox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Formations are overrated, tactics aren't.Isn't a formation just another tactic ?
kingfox Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 If we do go 3-5-2 we can easily play it two ways, a more attacking way when playing at home, and a more defensive way when we are playing away especially against the more physical teams in the division, who we seemed to lack against last season. 3-5-2(Attacking) Schmeichel Moore - Morgan - NEW CBDe Laet - James - King - Bakayogo Knockaert Wood - Nugent SUBS - Logan, Whitbread, Konchesky, NEW CM, Dyer/Marshall, Schlupp, Vardy 3-5-2(Defensive) Schmeichel Morgan - Whitbread - NEW CB NEW CM De Laet - James - King - Bakayogo/Schlupp Wood - Nugent SUBS - Logan, Moore, Konchesky, Drinkwater/Cain, Knockaert, Dyer, Vardy/Waghorn

The only change would be Danns, for King, away from home.
Haydos Posted 24 July 2013 Posted 24 July 2013 Isn't a formation just another tactic ? Yep, don't I look the fool. I meant the way a team plays is more important than the formation they play in. Stupid brain words.
Father Ted Posted 25 July 2013 Posted 25 July 2013 I'd go with this at Boro: Schmeichel Moore - Morgan - St.Ledger De Laet------------------------------Schlupp King James Knockaert Wood Vardy Subs: Logan, Konchesky, Marshall, Danns, Nugent, Waghorn, Cain.
