What????

I can't remember exactly but the teams voted on who to relegate out of the bottom few teams.

Wiki

Up until 1988, the bottom teams in the Football League had to apply for re-election to the League. Any aspiring non-league clubs with seek election alongside them

In the 40 years of elections after World War two, just seven teams failed to be re-elected

In the 50 seasons of football after WWII, 17 teams were relegated from the league

From 1988 to 2002 promotion between the league and the conference was on an automatic one-up one-down basis, subject to ground and financial criertia

Between 1993 and 1997, the Fotball League changed the deadline by which these criteria had to be met, resulting in no promotions

From 2003, a two-up-down system was introduced, with the Conference having play-offs amongst the 2nd to 5th placed teams to decide which gained the second promotion spot.

Also

In the 1958/59 season, Gateshead finished in twentieth (20th) position at the end of the season, then the following season, the 1959/60 campaign, Gateshead finished the season even lower than the previous one, finishing in twenty-second (22nd) position. At that time, the bottom-four teams in the Fourth Division had to apply for re-election. Gateshead applied along with Southport, who applied for the third year running, and for the seventh time altogether. Oldham, who were also applying for the second year in a row, and Hartlepool, who were applying for the fourth time. The Football League failed to re-elect Gateshead.

Wow, I never knew that!

Glad that's stopped

Absolute injustice for Gateshead that. Want Cambridge to win though, my old housemate supports them. Good set of fans on their day too.

I notice SSN are barely bothered. They rather Guillem Balague tell us what they've just told us about some barrier collapsing.
