Guest MattP Posted 21 January 2014 Posted 21 January 2014 The left will say the right want to keep unemployment high to force wages down, the right will say the left want to keep people on benefit so that they can control them and force them to vote labour to keep their benefit. There's probably a little bit of truth in both. The people working at the job centre certainly won't mind unemployment numbers being high, after all the more work for them the more on the dole. A good idea might be to put these people on performance related pay for finding people work, they might put a bit more effort in, it's very concerning to read comments from everyone who seems to have attended the job centre than the staff are useless and the place was little help.
Harry - LCFC Posted 21 January 2014 Posted 21 January 2014 yes, it makes a case for their expansion. government is ultimately self serving, everything it does is to facilitate it's expansion and get more wealth circulating through it instead of the market. the bigger it gets, the more self serving it becomes. no government has ever behaved otherwise. now I dont believe everyone in government is deliberately plotting this expansion, although government will definatley have corrupt individuals working in it who are. this is more instinctive behaviour of the state. one thing humans are very good at doing is rationalising things, "if it's good for me, then it must be for everyone else". I think I agree with Webbo more. It's about political parties wanting to stay in office rather than governments wanting to expand I think. Parties can't achieve their goal by continuous expansion of the welfare state as it will eventually be met with disapproval from the electorate. We see it regularly on this forum.

The God Emperor Posted 21 January 2014 Posted 21 January 2014 I said there is a limit to government expansion not that any party will attempt to shrink it. the only limit is when the state can no longer sustain itself and it colapses. democracy doesnt limit growth of government, just gives it different way to expand. instead of putting a gun to the heads of uneducated peasants, it simply bargains for more power by using legislation to create the conditions where it can make a case to the voters for its expansion. look at all the people crying out for more banking regulations and more government involvement in the market.

I have had some beers though and I might change my mind when my head clears. As you may have guessed I am a little skeptical as far as politicians are concerned. Their initial reasons for entering politics may be genuine but things change and they may find they have to to retain their position. I have no doubt the are some that keep to their principles from all parties.

Fantastic, much better they do something and contribute to the nation, much rather she was being paid a wage by a magazine that buying her fags courtesy of mine and your income. This could be an awkward one for Rincewind, if they do become stars and start earning a few quid they'll lose their credit of people as virtue and become part of the evil 'rich'. Who knows? Posted 27 January 2014 Posted 27 January 2014 Fungi seems more normal this week, like he actually could do a job, but it is hard to know what to say when he is complaining about the shit hole he lives in, you would think if he is that bothered he would perhaps clean every now and again. A bit of a scam that though isn't it, £20 for an audition, there were like 20 odd people there, £400 to hold some auditions, surely that can't be right.
