60mph speed limit proposal for stretch of M1 motorway

Yeah, it's the way we go to home games. Bit annoying, don't really get what it's about. The rest of it will remain 70mph? What if you have a fuel economy car?

They still look at the wrong things, people will still travel faster. They should be looking to get people who sit in the middle lane, which is one of the most frustrating things.

How is that anything to do with economical driving?

Oh no, that last part isn't. I was just saying something that needs to be dealt with.

I don't think anything will ever be done about it. Too many idiots and/or old people :P

Most modern cars optimum economy speed is now 70mph, so its a strange decision really.

I don't think that's the case.  Vauxhall's own website says you use 9% more fuel at 70 mph than at 60 mph, and about 15% more than at 50 mph (I only looked at that because I own a mighty Astra (the fuel economy of which falls through the floor if you go much over 70)

You wouldn't tune any mass market car to be fuel efficient at 70 mph as in anything like normal usage the amount of time spent at that speed relative to crawling along in traffic jams is bugger all.  My car is used for a broad mix of driving (short commutes in week, driving around the county in the day and longer runs at the weekend) and the average speed it records rarely gets much above 30.  Manufacturers as far as I'm aware still quote all their mpgs at 55 mph (they may have to, of course) so I assume this is where they aim to have optimum fuel economy as it's a selling point.

I'm still a bit surprised they've done it though.  It's not long ago that the Tories were advocating increasing the speed limit to 80 mph, but presumably they had it pointed out to them that it wouldn't help the old emissions and also it would kill a few people into the mix as well.

The law was changed recently so the coppers can issue a fixed penalty for this, but whether they have been on any scale is anyone's guess.  I agree, it's a right pain in the arse.  There was a car trundling down the M69 in the middle lane the other day barely doing 60 - how can anyone not know you're not supposed to do that?

The 60 mph limit I believe is just a trial to see how it goes.  As far as enforcement is concerned, I wonder if it's one of the sections where there's active traffic management, like on the M42?  Otherwise you wonder whether people would just ignore it en masse, because it is a bit of a culture shock, isn't it?

The speed limit is already 70mph, doesn't really stop people driving at 80mph.

Maybe if they reduce all speed limits by ten, people might drive the way they were originally intended.

No doubt they'll put speed cameras all along there so they can make some cash money while saving the world.

If it means making money out of someone other than me, I'm all for it.

A couple of years ago in Spain they reduced the speed limit on motorways from 120 to 110, to encourage people to drive in more fuel efficient manner was the reasoning from the Spanish government, the troubles in Libya was causing the oil prices to rise dramatically. First day this was implemented was, allegedley, a record day in terms of the number of fines given out.

It was scrapped after 2 months, apparently saving the country 450m in the process.

I'm no expert but how will that improve anything? Surely the change in speed itself will do no favours, before the inevitable change back up to 70 does the same again.

Pointless idea even if I'm wrong.

That's not correct at all.

You use 9% more fuel but get there 16% faster.

Happens all over the country. Such a dirty way of making money, and really does nobody any favours because it makes people lose respect for the integrity of the law.

It was much better when you could just pick and choose the laws you wanted to obey and get away with opting out of some of them, yes

Time rich! Cash poor!

Even I don't drive at 60 mph on the motorway

This was my reaction. You make less pollution for a longer time. :dunno:

Maybe not?

It also said the change would bring "reduced congestion, increased capacity and improved journey time reliability for users of the motorway".

Just heard a mate of my mates passed away on the M1 in a car crash, thought that'd have something to do with the new speed limit, clearly not. But will this really reduce pollution?
