Posted 9 January 2014 Posted 9 January 2014 Regards campness, the problem is the majority of high profile gays are camp, but in some cases it is part of their personality, but they exaggerrate it as part of their celebrity persona, and some cases they have become high profile homosexuals because they are like that anyway and it is the first thing you associate with them, rather than their actual talent. Mainly because most of them have no discernible talent. Take Derren Brown, most people think first of his mind reading ability and showmanship, before they think, homosexual. Elton John and Julian Clary, you think gay, before you think singer/comedian. What you see on TV is rarely the case in real life, Finnaldo's comments make me think of an ex-colleague of mine, when I first met him he was kinda annoying as he was a bit camp, but as I got to know him I realised that he wasn't like that if we were just having a couple of post work drinks. Then when we were starting a new project he started camping it up again in the office. I asked him about it, and he said that he camps it up so that people know he is gay, rather than speculate. It was in part insecurity and part fear, he didn't want to have to introduce himself as hi my name is.... and I'm gay. But he wanted people to know so they didn't say or do anything that would make him or them feel uncomfortable. Reminds me of another gay bloke at halls in uni, first few days nobody knew each other, and we were just a bunch of lads sitting round talking shit and someone was making comments about batty boys, not anything offensive, but, just for want of a better word, banter. When he found out one of the lads was gay, he felt really embarrassed about the comments he had been making. Make of that what you will.

I bet everytime he had a poor game he'd get absolutely ripped! I'd judge him on how he played in that game, not what he does in the bedroom, which doesn't enter into the equation when talking about a football performance.

He felt insecure about people speculating about his sexuality, so acted up to the stereotype to make it clear, and the fear part was a fear of causing offence or being thought to have deceived people. He was secure about his sexuality and wasn't scared of getting abuse for it, but it still wasn't as simple as that and felt he had to act up to the stereotype. Incidentally this was about 10 years ago.

I know a couple of gay guys at my school and they're both quite camp. I've met a few other gay guys previously and they've been similar. I was working from my own experience and that's what I have. That's why I asked people who do know more on the subject whether there is a link, whether it be natural or to fit in. fair enough, wasnt having a dig it just made me laugh. I play for a football team where probably 90% of the people are gay and yeah you get 1 or 2 camp ones but generally you would have no idea if they are gay or not.

Which makes him a positive gay celebrity role model, someone who is successful and happens to be openly gay but hasn't used his sexuality to further his career.

Ironically, you could also argue that he did the gay community no favour at all because most of people did not know he was gay due to the fact he did not publicise it enough (through interviews etc rather than OTT gestures etc) reducing the chances of widespread acceptance of gay people. It is a catch 22 situation I suppose- people get annoyed at OTT gay people creating negative perceptions but did not notice discreet types so the probability of media over-hyping gay celebrities do not decrease reducing chances of creating positive perceptions and widespread acceptance.

I don't said he tries to hide it, he just don't publicise it enough but then again-it is not his problem to promote the acceptance and if he prefers to just focus on his shows etc fair enough.

I wondered if any former or current city players had come out. While not agreeing with his lifestyle choices (how can he not like girls?), he certainly is brave to do it. Thoughts?
