SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 First Grand Slam of the year, always a personal favourite of mine. Going to be hot all first week of the Tournament which will test some players so early in the season.
ozleicester Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 First 4 days all predicted to be around 40 degrees its going to play havoc with fitness and recovery and match timing
kingfox Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Jerzy, Jerzy, Jerzy. Watched Robson, awful performance from her. Watson lost as well, but put in a much better performance, did well to comeback, but failed towards the end. Jerzy and Sabine on later, so might as well go bed for a bit.
deejdeej Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Is this on Eurosport all tournament or another channel??

One thing I dislike about the Aussie Open is I barely see any with having to sleep. So I'll take your word for it that Robson was poor, but worth remembering that she'd just come back from a wrist injury that she aggravated a few days ago.

Young Jordy is giving Jerzy a fair match not bad for a kid ranked 320 odd in the world.

So I'll take your word for it that Robson was poor, but worth remembering that she'd just come back from a wrist injury that she aggravated a few days ago. Yeah she was poor, wrist aside, she didn't want to use that as an excuse, Flipkens hardly broke sweat, kept slicing and taking the pace off the ball, Robson so flat always hit the ball into the net. Watson played well, but got broke twice at the end of the match. Young Jordy is giving Jerzy a fair match not bad for a kid ranked 320 odd in the world. Just woke up. So didn't see any of the Aussie guy. But Jerzy is plucking the comeback atm.

I know she doesn't want to use it as an excuse, but that's just media talk. She's not completed a match since she was injured, and the first attempt at doing so ended in retirement. She'll want to gloss over it but lack of matches, and the fact her wrist didn't hold out last time she took to the court must have been playing on her mind. We all know Robson has the game to give the likes of Flipkens a decent battle, so while she was poor last night, certain circumstances had a bearing on that, and it's clearly not an indication of the player she is.

She didn't even really have to go ahead with the match. Everyone knew of her wrist injury, but she was so poor, she pretty much embarrassed herself with that performance. Jamie Hampton pulled out injured before the tournament, a sensible thing to do. To some extent at least Laura had the courage to step on court, but she can just aggravate her wrist more, does she want to get better? I just don't know why, players who are injured beforehand, decided to step on court. Azarenka for one pulled out of quite a few matches beforehand last season, annoyed a few people, but it's the right thing to do. Strange One.
Manwell Pablo Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Great start down to Murray already . TBH I can't see him doing much what with the back injury and weather either.
Guest MattP Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Young Jordy is giving Jerzy a fair match not bad for a kid ranked 320 odd in the world. Great match, it's a shame he didnt have the belief to finish him off. Robson looked awful, looks a bit plumpy as well, get the feeling she has some off court issues. Agree on Murray Pab, watched him v Hewitt on Friday and he looked woefully short of form and fitness, would be impressed if he got to the last four.

Agree about Robson, the injury clearly gave her serious trouble. Can see Murray getting to the last 4 though purely because there's no one in his quarter who can really stop him who he's likely to play. There's no dangerous floaters (Gulbis, Wawrinka et al) in there at all really - all the players in there have styles that match up against his well. The injury and fitness aren't an issue, he's pain free and has been training in Miami all winter - match practice and awareness is the issue. He's got two easier matches in R1 and R2 which could give him time to get some of that match practice. Lopez could give him problems in R3, but Murray has his number. R4 against Isner might be interesting provided they both get there, but a big server is hardly going to challenge Murrays movement. As for the QF it's likely to be one of Tsonga, Verdasco or Federer and if he's done well enough to make it that far I'd actually make Verdasco the most dangerous opponent out of those three for Murray. That being said, I expect his run to end in the last 4 to Nadal. Of course, I could be wrong and he could bow out early, but he likes playing in Aus and if he can play himself into some form I expect him to go pretty deep. Another Nadal - Nole final here, I think.

leicsmac Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 Be highly impressed if he makes the semi, but fingers crossed. I do think that it's purely down to the grace of the draw that he has a chance of doing so, but the way it has fallen has given him a decent shot IMO.
Bert Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 3rd best tourney. Either way it's all about the Masters snooker this week.
Manwell Pablo Posted 13 January 2014 Posted 13 January 2014 3rd best tourney. Either way it's all about the Masters snooker this week. I wouldn't even rate it that highly tbh.

Azarenka for one pulled out of quite a few matches beforehand last season, annoyed a few people, but it's the right thing to do. Strange One. Her wrist is better, she just won't have these same movement in it yet, she'll be severely lacking match practice and she'll won't be sharp. Only playing matches now will get her back on form, she's not injured as such, she's just not 100%. Same with Murray, we all know he can reach the final here when he's sharp, but as others have said, they'll be surprised if makes the last 4 or further because he's not match sharp. Should Murray pull out because he's not 100% after his back surgery? You're so critical of players sometimes, I wonder if you realise what sportsmen and women go through to play their sport. She's not gonna come back from injuring one of the most important parts of a tennis players body and perform brilliantly is she?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 13 January 2014 Author Posted 13 January 2014 Going to be a stinker out there already 30 degrees where i am (10kms from Melbourne Park) and it's only 8.20am

If you watched it, she seriously embarrassed herself in that second set. Like I said, she could of pulled out, there would of been no harm done. Murray's recovered though, and has been playing matches. Robson hasn't completed a full match, and I think it said she hasn't been training properly the past four weeks. Hampton pulled out, she could of easily done the same, to save a humiliation, because that's what it was.

You might see it as humiliation, she'll mostly see it as another step of her rehabilitation.
leicsmac Posted 14 January 2014 Posted 14 January 2014 Murray looking decent enough today - good to get a quick win and get out of the heat to conserve energy for subsequent rounds. Shame about the Tomic-Nadal match, had Bernie been at full fitness he may at least have made it entertaining.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 14 January 2014 Author Posted 14 January 2014 Hewitt showed plenty of fight in what was his 16th or 17th Aus Open, 2 sets to love down and even had a match point at one stage only for him to lose.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 January 2014 Author Posted 17 January 2014 Almost feel sorry for some of these players, it's been sweltering here and players have been dropping like flies. Del Potro out is probably the first major casualty in the mens.
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 January 2014 Posted 17 January 2014 3.30 am tonight for Murray, be interesting to see how he gets on with the heat and the back now the Gimmies are out the way. Think I'll give it a miss, might have been tempted if it was before 01:00

Think I'll give it a miss, might have been tempted if it was before 01:00 Back (as I've said before) is no longer a problem. The heat may be though, but at least that'll be the same for both players. Think how hard a graft it will be will strongly depend on which Lopez shows up and for how long.
