That was absolutely superb this morning.

Fancy Fed to do Murray tomorrow, he's been on fire this tournament.

Certainly possible if he plays the way he did against Tsonga. A lot of it depends on which Fed shows up today. Should be a cracker!

Murray in trouble, Federer been brilliant this tournament, Edberg has really made a difference.

Azarenka out on the Women's side, Radwanska has struggled against her in many of their last matches, but last night she was sublime. Some of the shots she got to, the likes of Djokovic would be proud of. Was probably the best performance of the Women's draw so far.

I don't know why I just get the feeling he's in for a bad year this year.

Not sure he has the hunger anymore now he's won Wimbledon.

When Federer's playing like this you can't really do much, I thought he was coming to the end of his career, but this appointment of Edberg has given him a new lease of life. Loads have commented on how well he is playing this tournament, and if he get's past Murray then Nadal then you'll definitely know how good his form is.

If Murray loses this, you can count the French Open out, Wimbledon & US will be his best bets, but there's a long way to go before them.

To be fair he has came into this off an operation with very little match practice, he even lost to Hewitt warming up for the tournament. Though I agree it will be harder for him without that "1st Slam or Wimbledon" hunger driving him.

That said, anyone would struggle with Federer playing like this.

Nah, he prioritised Wimbledon above all else last season to make sure he won it. This season he wants to target the year-end no.1 so he'll have plenty of drive to achieve that. To be honest I can't quite understand why you'd say winning one Wimby title would rob him of desire...

Fed has shown a completely different game plan this year under Edbergs coaching - keeping the points short. I don't think Nadal will give him the same luxury in the next round as Murray has done so far here. That being said, I would like to see Fed add to his GS tally one or two more times and this is as good a place as any, so if he wins today I'd like him to go all the way.

It's not just today he's seemed out of sorts for awhile, seems to be getting taken out of the lesser tournaments by people who have no right to beat him. This will be the second straight major he's failed to make the semi's.

When has that happened?

He lost in the US Open QF to Wawrinka (who was on inspired form and still is and is a bad matchup for him anyway) and then has taken months off to have his back done. Came back and lost early doors in Abu Dhabi in his first competitive matches for months, which really can only be expected. Then the next tournament was this one.

I honestly don't get where you're getting this idea that he's suffering a dip in form that's going to carry on into the future.

Fed blows two MP's, Murray takes the tie break. Into a fourth we go.

Murray coming off a back operation and therefore little chance to get to full match sharpness in the interim. The margins in tennis are so small.

Although he's had a straightforward draw, a QF here is a decent showing all things considered, expect him to get better as the year goes on...

All correct, and he's right Manwell.

Losing to Wawrinka isn't failing, this guy has turned himself into an Elite player the past season or so. He's beaten Murray & Djokovic in his last two Grand Slams, that is not a fluke, that shows how much quality he possess nowadays.

Since winning Wimbledon he's won nothing, not even made a semi losing to Ernest Gulbis, Tommy Berdych and Warwinka before getting injured (above mentioned)and he's lost to Mayer and Hewitt since coming back from injury, and he's more than likely going to go out here as well. From this, with the dip in ranking, I think he's going to have a bad year, you may not agree, we'll see who's right.

Personally I think my simplistic explanation of his post Wimbledon-dip is the back problems and early this year getting back to full match fitness after the operation.

Therefore I think he's only going to improve as the year goes on.

But I could be wrong, and like you said we'll see who's right when the year is up.

And that's that. Fed did deserve that one - as I said earlier would be nice for him to give Rafa a going over in the semis or the final is going to be a big blowout, I think.

QF's is decent for Murray considering he'd come into this tournament with two competitive matches in nearly four months. Hopefully it won't be too long before he's 100% match sharp again and moving better because he doesn't have to worry about the back any more.

He had actually suffered with the back problem throughout the year, it was hurting him especially at the US Open which is what prompted him to get the surgery. To come back and make a Quarter final of a slam after very few matches is a good run. I'm sure he will be in prime form for Wimbledon and the US Open.

Would have been interesting to have seen Murray against someone other than Fed in the Quarters and seen how he'd copped! Lets me honest, no matter where he may be in the seedings Fed still has the ability to be a class act and his game is certainly back on the up. I don't think Murray can be too unhappy but would have enjoyed seeing him play someone more like Tsonga, Berdych etc. Good players but not quite great!

Lets be honest, it wasn't a "good run" was it, he had one half decent win against Lopez,  had he lost to any of the other three in 5 sets you'd be severely worried.

And to clarify I'm not saying he's going to be terrible I don't see him winning another major this year.

He didn't deserve a set really, apart from the end of that tiebreak he was completely outclassed today.

What a job Edberg is doing with Fed, he looks faster and sharper than he did last year and is finally starting to look more aggressive on points where he gains the upper hand early.

If he and Nadal both turn in the performances they have this tournament so far and Roger can carry on this aggressive style, coupled with this new faster surface, Nadal could be there for the taking for FedEx.

Nadal show's Federer may not be quite as "back" as some thought!

Yeah Nadal was different level was some great tennis for the first set and a bit. Then Nadal monstered him and jumped all over Feds serve.

Posted

Well Wawrinka doesn't seem to have started all that nervously, while Nadal seems to be a little tight. Hopefully will be a good contest then.

Great hold from Stan to take the first.

Don't care who wins, they are my two favourite players in the game atm.

I'm just hoping for five, but if Wawrinka keeps on playing like this, and get's more first serves in, he could demolish Rafa 3 sets to 0
