'Pleat Out'

I wasn't even alive during this era so it's all news to me. It's a great read though, it's always interesting to read about city before my time! In 2" years time we'll be looking back at how NP took us from a decent championship side to a top 6 premier league side with 2 fa cups, 4 League cups and a Europa league trophy to our name :)

Steve Thompson was one of the few good pleat signings. Alot of good younsters came through during his tenure, although I don't how much can be attributed to him.

I wasn't a City fan then, but wasn't the consensus that Pleat f**Ked us over because he was a Forest fan?, the board didn't realise that and we suffered!

Yeh that's it he got himself sacked and damaged his reputation because he supported Forest. That makes total sense.

Thompson was signed by Little.

Pleat has a form or verbal diaharreia(not a word I spell every day).Incredible how he ever got a job in management or punditry.

Mind Peter taylor was probably worse and still in management,

I remember that era. Defence was very frail, had some very slight players at the back like Spearing, Rob Johnson, Alan Paris, Marc North, Ali Mauchlen and we got bullied a lot. They didn't train half as much as they did later under Little and it showed in games. Some of the players from that and the Hamilton era went on to feature for better sides - Walsh, Wright, Russell, Oldfield, Mills... Pleat's problem was that he never had it within him to take them by the scruff of the neck, get them in shape and forge a side that was hard to beat. That was the case for much of the rest of his managerial career too.

But, much like the Levein era, you have to place it all in the context of a manager operating on a proper shoestring budget. When that happens you're not doing too badly if you just stay up every year.

That said, I called for him to be fired too. Stood outside the ground after a loss to Ipswich when Shipman came out and spoke to the fans. Someone said 'why don't you ****ing sign someone?' And he said 'we tried to sign Alan Butcher didn't we?' He meant Terry Butcher. It all seemed a bit amateur to be honest.

It was a meant as a pun, look who sold him to us ;)

Edit, admittedly I didn't word in that way but its been a long day and it was intended as a joke.

Mauchlen was a midfielder and though slight was a nasty fecker who took no shit.

Pleat as an ITV pundit - two words - "Yossi Bennanoon"  lol

Good read that. Pretty much sums up an awful period.

Pleat's press conferences were mystifying, so God only knows what the players made of his team talks.

One vivid memory is beating Chelsea at Filbert St, when they were unbeaten for months and going for promotion. There were fights all over the ground, Tony Spearing played a blinder and as we were leaving news started coming through about the Hillsborough disaster

I remember that game as well, people were tuning into the radios about the Forest game. No one knew what was happenning though
